"And you've already got a hundred games in your backlog." Dude, don't call me out like this. The worst part is that I'm supposed to be on a 3-month no-buy, and I've already bought three games in the first month.
Wow, I'm surprised you scored it so high. I love the atelier series, been playing it since the ps3. It's not the kind of title that usually gets mainstream appeal. I'm glad Ryza's getting us on the map.
They are becming more mainstream now. Hopefully as more sales are made in the West, we will get English VA. The little squealing & grunting sounds in Japanese during combat are a bit much for most Westerners. LOL

Had been waiting on this, one of the few games I've actually preordered on eshop. Love Koei/Tecmo games. Glad yall did a review on it. I think it deserves one.
I have been looking into the Atelier series as a whole and admittedly because of how many games that have been made it caught me off guard the rate at which they are made and how many there have been in the last decade. I thought the Tales games were quickly produced but these seem to breed like rabbits. Plus I won't lie I love this kind of art style anyway and feel they always age better than something that goes for an ultra realistic looks for the time of release. This is now on my list once I firmly get into the series.
The ONLY reason the tales games seem like they are quickly produced was because the publisher was catching the west up to Japan in terms of releases. It's been five or so years since the last release of any tales game. Mobile games don't count.
Thanks for the great indepth review 🙏 The best Switch review channel around! Definitely gonna pick this up as soon as I'm done with the first Atelier Ryza, super hyped to play.
It's so good to hear this game has a solid cast and story. I've tried Atelier Sophie 2, and while I love all the elements themselves - exploring, gathering materials, synthesizing in a mini-game, battle, lots of crafting - I found most of the characters to be sort of cardboard cutouts we don't seem to properly get to know. If this game has fun banter and warmer characters, I'm sure it will fix the main issue I had with my first Atelier experience. Thanks for the helpful review!
Atelier Ryza has replaced the Tales of series as my favorite JRPG games. I love the pace of the games, the characters, & just the chill nature of them. I'm much older than I was when Tales of Symphonia was my jam, so I appreciate being able to play these games at a slower pace. And yes, thicc thighs and all
I absolutely loved the game, and your comments seem spot on! As you mentioned the change of weather, I just want to add that while raining, the character clothes look wet accordingly. A nice little detail that shows the dedication of the game makers.
I've been playing this since it was launched in the eshop, (I bought the base game and NOTE i am playing it on easy because I play for story not a challenge) and i have to say I've really enjoyed it. I did play the first one to completion and i think a part of me having no issue with with the synthesis came from doing that last year. When using the auto crafting they sadly didn't add a way to make sure one of your rarer items are not used in it, aside from just locking the item it's self. Which then you have to unlock later to use in a crafting. The biggest issue I've had though is just a lack of direction at points. There is a progress story log, which most of the time can tell you where to go by pressing the + button. What can be confusing is there are two pages to this, one for quest and the other for the story, to change between the two you have to hit + again. Here at one point it told me i needed to level my axe when in fact i needed to find missing lore points on the map to fill out my journal. At another point the place i needed to go next to advance the story was not at the top of the list, instead was the second (bullet, for lack of a better term) point on it. The combat is as said here a HUGE improvement, so far each fighting style rhythm has not been a huge issue to get the hang of, though with each leveling of the tactics gauge you do have to remember to give a bit more time to make full use of the combo system and then chain on your special abilities in combat. I wasn't enthusiastic at first that they changed the item use system. Because early on it was hard to have point available in battle if you forgot to heal outside of it. I was able to adjust fairly quickly though, but it is a major change to how combat and healing works in the last game. By far the crafting while improved to a point is still confusing, and the new 'ability tree' threw me, I've had to go online to look up many points of 'wait how do i do this? or find this?'. The new rope ability is a prime example, they don't tell you how to upgrade it in the game, there are also no real clues in the crafting of it. Usually if there is a new trait you need it will be its own node in the recipe. It's not here and i had to go online to figure it out. Story is so far as good as the original, with the characters as said here making up for the cliche points in the game. I also found myself figuring things out at times before they do in the game. Story though is what I play RPG's for, and so far its been more than able to keep my interest through farm more hours than i wish to admit to in game play.......
I can't wait till I have the money to pick this one up! Ryza 1 was my first Atelier game, and one of my favorite JRPGs in recent years. Also, I gotta say I LOVE the fact that you rate Value in your scores. A lot of reviewers tend to neglect the value of a game, usually due to getting free copies imo & not realizing a lot of people don't want to drop $60 on a game that could be 5-10 hrs long. I knew this game would have lots of content anyway, but I'll keep your Value score in mind when I watch future reviews you do! Anyways, great video & great review!

This combat system looks like it builds on the fantastic system earlier used in Blue Reflection. Glad to see they didn't let that go to waste, because it was really good there too.
I've been playing the first Atelier game for a while now and I find the crafting/alchemy system to be pretty confusing and I can't really figure out how it works. Call me lazy, but the auto crafting system in this game looks to me to be the way to go.

This looks like a really good game, and is one I really want to get. It'll be my first game in this series. The art looks beautiful, the gameplay looks fun and yeah that's it really
The thing that stuck me to this games is the characters the first was the characters struggling responsibilities to grow up into now some characters are depressongly similar to people I know where no they all are coping through responsibility ( the farm girl known nothing but work, a little girl shoildering responsibility for his sickly father, Boss self sacrifing toxic work mindset of work over self) it sometimes hits right at home even what age your at.
Really enjoyed the first game, though I never finished it. Good excuse to go back. Just wish it had English voice acting, but it doesn't bother me that much. Love seeing a sequal that improves everything properly.
Couple of points as a newcomer to the channel. 1) great reviews! Very detailed and enthusiastic. 2) your scoring system seems super arbitrary. 18 out of 20? What does that even mean?
I think they score it on 5 parts music, graphic etc, 20 x 5 =100 = 10 , if you calculate the numbers it would seem more fair at the end all individual scores are 18 x 5 = 90 so the score is a 9 or 90 however you want to see it, i think it's a great calculation system but it always depend on the individual opinion of the reviewer.

Hehehe :D
I had never heard of this series before but I have to get it!!!
Now if we could only get Dark Cloud 2 on Switch.... yes....make it happen!
daaamn. i still need to finish the first, but i feel a big itch to get this one now as well
