  • New Amsterdam Travel Video- The city of Haarlem has everything, except the hustle and bustle of a big city like Amsterdam. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands it was also one of the biggest back before Amsterdam's importance grew in the Golden Age. Only 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam, it is a wonderful daytrip where you will find old churches and cathedrals, boats and waterways, art and science museums, shopping on cobblestoned streets and plenty of narrow streets and alleyways to explore. There's even a popular brewery were you can enjoy the best craft beers. Besides Amsterdam, Haarlem is a must for your travel itinerary. #haarlem #amsterdam #holland

Frans Hals, the famous Dutch painter, was born in 1582 in Antwerpen, located in current Belgium. But you have to keep in mind that Belgium at that time was still part of the Zeventien Provinciën (Seventien provinces). It was called neither Holland or Belgium at the time.

Great video about my hometown of Haarlem. About the Jopen beer brand. It’s named after a medieval style of beer barrel, which were called jopen. A particular size of barrel that was used to export Haarlem beer all throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. My grandfathers cousin used to be the pastor of that Liberal Reformed Church, until it was closed. The Jopen beer brand was established to celebrate the fact, that Haarlem had 750 years of city rights in 1994. Two beer recipes were found in the city archives. One dating back to 1407, and the other one to 1501. The first one is now called Jopen Koyt, and the other one is called Jopen Hoppen. Both can still be found now in bottler form in local supermarkets, or drank at the Jopen Church itself.

Wow, great info, thank you. How was the church called Jopen then? I assumed the beer was named after the church.

@@ACwebseries the current name of the church “the Jopen church”, comes from the beer brand “Jopen Beer”. Before it became a brewery, the church was called Vestekerk or Jacob church.

You should do a video of the under explored regions of France. Toulouse and smaller towns like Foix and the surrounding area.

I've visited Haarlem 4 times over the past 20 years. Always a favorite. I like it a lot better than Amsterdam, much calmer.

One thing you didn't mention the organ in the St Bavo Church was installed in 1738 and George Friedrich Händel played it in 1740, actually travelled there for that reason. Another of the great composers in 1766, at 10 years old was Mozart.

Next to the windmill is a marina.
Why not rent a boat, and visit Haarlem, Leiden, Gouda and Amsterdam in (let's say) 3 weeks ?
With a boat you moor right in the city's centre, and the cost isn't prohibitive. You could also say it's outright cheap. 🙂

Ga ook eens kijken in Haarlem noord, Haarlem oost of Schalkwijk, kijken of er dan nog zoveel hartjes worden uitgedeeld, verpauperde door Amsterdamse yuppen geannexeerde stad.
