- America's Best Whitewater rafting Upper Gauley Whitewater Rafting is 12-mile-long rafting located in West Virginia. I booked the rafting from New Gauley and Adventures. We did camping on the first day, the second day we left from the agency to the raft location at around 8am. It took us around half an hour to reach the raft location or Summerville Dam.

Rafting at Upper Gauley is so much exciting and fun but at the same time, there is an equal probability of popping out or falling off the raft. I was popped out twice - lost paddle rapid and near Pillow rock rapid.
Personally, Upper Gauley Whitewater is the best whitewater rafting among rafting that i did up to this point.

I absolutely love the Gauley, (I guided there for 45+ years), but it's not the best whitewater in America. There are bigger volume rivers out west like the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon; 269 miles of huge rapids and scenery that will blow you away.
BTW, your guide was pretty bad and must have been new to the Gauley. Where you got stuck in the rocks (Heroes go right, Turkeys go left) shouldn't have happened, it's an easy rapid. Then he got dumped out in the hole at 3rd drop in Lost Paddle 😂

@@603travelsI'd highly recommend trying to get on Westwater stretch. It's technically in UT, but the put-in is right across the line from Grand Junction. Western Co is the most awesome part to me , and Westwater is a fun stretch of river. It's COMPLETELY different from our Eastern rivers, so the experience in itself is truly amazing the first time!
