Open Space: SmokePurpp | Mass Appeal

"There's a certain thing in your brain, that once you unlock your confidence, and you know you're good, itts over." Ao says Smokepurpp, the Florida rapper who started recording tracks on his Apple headphone mic two years ago.
So how, exactly, did he unlock his confidence? The secret is revealed in MASS APPEAL's latest Open Space interview, which you can watch above.
"It was weird," Purpp recalls. "I watched the Lil Wayne documentary on shrooms, and it was the craziest experience. I watched how he was acting, and he looked so confident... that sparked my brain. I realized, like, 'Yo, all you gotta do is be confident. If you're confident, people are gonna be confident for you.' " Since then the so-called "Soundcloud Rapper" has inked a record deal with Interscope's Alamo Records imprint, and is now preparing to release his highly anticipated Deadstar project.
"I started as a producer," he says. "I started rapping cause nobody used my beats. I was just rapping for fun, but people were fuckin' with it." He began skipping school to make music and eventually got kicked out. Purpp says he has enough credits to graduate but at this point he's not bothered. After all, as he points out, "I'd probably make more money than a doctor."
There is no doubt that Florida's rap scene is popping in a major way at the moment. "We all knew each other-every single one of us," says SmokePurpp. "They actually started the scene-XXX, Lil Pump, Wifi, Skimask, Slumpgod. And there's a lot more people coming up that people don't even know about. They literally built a scene until it was overflowing. It got to a point where it was everywhere-like, everybody's from Florida. That's just how it happened. It was an eruption."
Purpp says the new wave of Florida rappers all share a certain rawness. "Sometimes we might make a song where we're screaming," he explains. "It's not mixed or nothing. You don't care if the beat is distorted. You just let it hit-just punch. That whole distortion sound... people really feel it."
Purpp shares the story of how another Florida upstart, his best friend Lil Pump, reluctantly got started in the rap game. "Nowadays rap is not just about rap," Purpp explains. "It's also being able to entertain. If you wanna make money you gotta be able to put on a good show." He believed Pump had the right stuff, but Pump wasn't interested. "He was like 'I don't care about that. I don't wanna do that'," Purpp recalls. "But he was already on Twitter being a character. I said 'You should rap bro. You got a persona.' I told him 'Bro, you're Lil Pump Jetskiii!'" His friend was immediately sparked. 'Yo-that shit sounds raw as fuck!' " he said, and the rest is history. The new moniker unlocked his confidence, if you will.
These days Purpp doesn't have a care in the world. Just don't mix him up with Spaceghostpurpp, with whom has had a certain amount of Twitter beef. "All those 'Fuck Purpps'' are not about me," he clarifies. "They're about fuckin' him. Let that be known, and stop askin'. Let that shit be straight. Replay that shit and put it in slow fuckin' motion."
