  • The owner of this apparently rebuilt machine told me he covered 6.5 miles on it in total after buying it, and that includes the distance he rode to get home again after hearing these noises appear in the first place.

Looks like fitting that fancy pump was shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.

A new (or relatively) new expensive SRM oil pump and plenty of play in the crank that's bad news. Look forward to the strip down 👍.

To those wanting to buy a Brit bike from that era. DON"T unless you plan on taking the entire motor apart, clean the sludge trap and rebuild from there. And when you finish rebuilt install an oil filter.

You can't assume they are all wrecks - there are good ones out there, but sadly, many 'restored' ones are not as good as they look.

My bike sounded similar to that after 100 miles on my first rebuild. Weather was nice, still went out on it. Two miles later it stalled and knocked a small hole in my primary side case. Big end let go. Three long days later I had it back on the road. Over 5000 miles on it now. Never did figure why it blew. Too many beers during build is my guess. Expensive lesson.

As expected, this is going to be a very interesting job, especially for me, as we have recently acquired a '67 Spitfire MkIII.
Bottom end supposedly rebuilt, but I've spotted a couple of bad signs already, like the clutch centre star washer being on the alternator rotor and the wrong size (but shiny) nuts on the barrel base.
Heaven knows what will be revealed when we get round to stripping it, but these vids will be a useful guide with what else to look out for.

Looks like early model with a big home market tank and big side covers. 65, 66 perhaps? You certainly made your point making it rattle on a bench. It looks like somebody tried to improve oil pressure on a worn out engine installing this new SRM oil pump just for a time of sale. Very strange with a loose crank pinion, usually they are really tight on the crank. Not much of the rebuilt with a crank loose in the engine block and vey low compression evident from a manner you started it. I agree, full engine rebuild is in order for this bike. And it seems a seller is a fraud.

i`ll wager the poor chap is suitably gutted too, whoever re-built it
seems to have omitted a few vital repairs ,,a character building
    experience ?

From the way you kicked it over either you've had your weetabix or the compression isn't too strong.

I think “ compression “ is more appropriate.

I have a 1967 BSA A65 THUNDERBOLT. Could I ADD A FRONT DISK BREAK AS A MODIFICTION FOR A BETTER STOPPING? Do you know the cost for this modification?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Рік тому +1

You might be able to fit one of many disc braked front ends, or just sort your drum brake out to work properly.

I grow up with English motorcycles. It was not a pleasant experience I have to say. Mainly due to my youthful inexperience and no money. While I still have a soft spot for English bikes I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole. I have a Royal Enfield now. Happy days!

Motorcycles are just like people, they get sick occasionally and need attention.Unlike people, however, these wonderfull old British motorcycles that were examples of the finest engineering of the time will go on for ever if looked after in the manner the original designers intended.

@@paulhenshaw4514 I remember now discussing this with my father, a skilled toolmaker. He would rage about what he saw as penny pinching by accountants that resulted in a second rate product. It does seem unnecessary mean and the Japanese take over of motorcycle production dominance seems in hindsight, inevitable.
