That Fifth Avenue candy commercial is narrated by my dad, Bob Hite - CBS news anchor and announcer from 1944 to 1979. Formerly at WXYZ Detroit, where he narrated the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, Yukon Challenge and The Shadow. At CBS he announced the end of WWII in Europe - VE Day, May 8th, 1945; in the 1950s hosted the CBS local tri-state tv news - and was probably best remembered for announcing the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite from 1970 to 1979. He also narrated one of Stanley Kubrick's first RKO Pathe film shorts, The Flying Padre, amongst many other RKO Pathe films, mostly in the 50s.

We had moved into town the day before I started first grade in 1965. Across the street from the school was a candy shop. Everyone who was anyone bought something there on the way back to school after walking home for lunch, or for a snack on the way home. I was given an entire *_25¢_* for myself every week! _FIVE_ whole cents a day! This was my first foray into budgeting and money-management.
There were barrels and buckets and boxes of penny candy and even items that were 2 for a penny, as well as singles and multiples for 5¢ and 10¢. It was tricky, especially before I understood multiplication and division. I particularly loved the items that were 2¢ each or 3 for a nickel! Woah, the bargain! Getting such a deal made it taste all the sweeter.
I remember I messed up about the second or third week, had blown the lot by Wednesday (it was that dastardly multiplication!). My parents reviewed the arithmetic with me and gave me an extra dime, but I was to know that that was the _last_ extra dime I was getting. Oh, how I loved planning what I was going to get, feeling so rich and powerful, able to make my own decisions. I could swap with friends, and give gifts, and discuss the merits of each candy on those walks home. So worldly!
My dad would ask every Sunday evening how many days of school the coming week, and put change in a tiny little basket with a pipe-cleaner palm tree sticking out of it on my dresser. Once I had the basics down, I told him I still needed the whole 25¢ for weeks with only 4 schooldays, so I could try the 'expensive' ten-cent candies. He agreed, but I had to promise to bring the special candy home before I opened it and share it with my little brother (I occasionally gave him something anyhow; I remember getting those tiny wax pop bottles just because he liked them).
That candy store woman and her daughter(?) did darn good business, very consistent, and probably retired to a spread in Florida. The daughter was nice and even smiled, but the older woman was rather curt. Of course, a couple hundred customers a day spending an average of around 7 cents might do that to a person.

I remember a candy store in my town run by a Mr. and Mrs. Palko. They watched their TV set up in a corner near the ceiling. It had a tin ceiling, ceiling fan, wooden floor, a store cat, and a great candy counter! Mr. Palko didn't talk much, but Mrs. Palko was a sweetie. They'd accept returned soda bottles in trade for some penny candy: Atomic fireballs, squirrel nut zippers, Mary Janes, etc.. You'd get a small paper bag of mix and match candies of your choice for 10 cents! They also sold comic books. (My favorites? Casper, Richie Rich, etc.)

Not mentioned here, but does anyone remember sin-sins? I had them in the 60s, they had a very unusual flavor, little small hard candy squares, groved on the flat sides, you bout them by the quarter pound, I loved them.

I saw a video clip of Elvis Costello with Geraldo Rivera for 20/20 in 1977 they were in a supermarket (The A&P) and Geraldo was asking people at the supermarket what they thought of "Punk Rock" and the people there thought he was talking about "Pop Rocks" they said they liked to eat it, it was funny.
