- How I single handed insulated our conservatory roof to improve the insulation. I am a 30 something lady who has a love or creating and doing DIY. I am no expert, everything is self taught via UA-cam! So I like to make my own videos to help other people too. This is just what I did, I am not an expert and this is not offering advice on how to do it.
Feel free to ask questions, I try to answer all comments

Excellent job, you are an inspiration. I have recently moved into a 120 year old cottage with a conservatory, but it is potentially easier to do, I hope. The roof is made of a series of rafters attached to the main wall of the cottage sloping down between the garage and what is now the kitchen. A lovely room that is cold of an evening, so it needs the polycarbonate roof insulating. I’ll miss the light it gives me. You have really impressed me with your endeavours. I’m 61 and retired. My diy skills are probably not up with yours, but I have all the time in the world, so I have no excuses. Thanks for this!
Great job and well articulated. You should be very proud of yourself.
This is great. You have inspired me to do mine. I have the same roof but my conservatory is really old and ugly. But I’ve spent a small fortune on the house, as much as I’d like to rip it down and start again, i just can’t. I hadn’t thought of using plasterboard, i thought it would be too heavy. Bravo 🙌🏻
Well done.I've had two guys on roofs similar to yours never moved so,well done.
Jane you are a superstar. Well done. You make it look very straightforward. Thank you for sounding so enthusiastic and encouraging. As a single female, I'm going to try.
We have the exact same conservatory type, including the light with no switch, so this was so incredibly helpful and actually convinced me to give it a go!
Very very impressed. Looking after kids, house and working. What a star ⭐️
Thanks, that’s kind of you to say.
i am a wee lad trying to renovate my room. this video motivates me to do it myself. thank you!
After watching you do yours Ian having a go to do mine, fed up trying to keep it warm ,brilliant job well done,
Thanks good luck with yours!
Just come across this video, you’re a girl after my own heart. You’ve done the most amazing job. Sooooo well done ❤ xx
Impressive, i have been quoted £20k as i have a two lantern conservatory and it is big, i am now looking at following this and give a go myself, feeling motivated and thank you.
You are my inspiration so i am about to do this over Christmas. Lovely job & thank you for the DVD.
Your conservatory, gazebo episodes are brilliant ,I learn alot, love your frankness and your explanation s.
Many thanks
Simon Seddon 🇬🇧
Thanks that’s very kind of you to say so, hope it’s helped you 👍🏻
@@LyricGrace I am now going to insulate my large metal shed.Taking inspiration from you if I don't try I will never know.
Many thanks
Simon Seddon 😀
Firstly great job 👍
I know that this was done years ago...
But I'd add, thermal acrylic paint to the wall & if you like, why not the ceiling as well.
Then add a far infrared heater bar, to heat it in the winter, this will cost a lot less to run than the oil filled radiator 👍👍
Thanks, I’ll look into that
hats off ti you lady! my conservatory looks exactly like your with fewer roof supports abd gas blown windows...will defo try this as it's way too cold in the winter!
excellent idea. must have saved a fortune on installation and really helped with temps
Very well done. You should be proud of yourself.
This is so super helpful! Thank you so much, we’re just about to do our father in laws for him, which he was quoted £2650 for, so this is incredible! You’re so clever! Xx
Good luck, just take it slowly and it’ll be fab!
What a woman! I am really impressed with what you achieved. Excellent x
Thank you, that’s very kind.
Brilliant job. Very impressed. I've been thinking about doing the same sort of thing for a while and you've certainly fired me up to get it done. Thanks very much for posting.
You’re welcome! Good luck
Looks great and good results. You have tie bars which help with the roof loading to stop roof sag and the sides spreading due to the extra weight.
You’ve done a fabulous job. I couldn’t do anything like yours, I’d end up ruining the project and it’s expensive to get wrong….and I would.
I don’t quite understand the appeal of conservatories. Ours is like a walk in fridge in winter and unbearably hot in summer. It’s used for storage.
Great job, thanks for sharing. Your video has given me the confidence to sort my conservatory.
Thanks for commenting, good luck with your project!
Very well done! at first I thought I'd wouldn't look good but you proved me wrong. Hats off to you. You should be well proud of yourself!
Thanks for you comment, I wasn’t sure myself when I started if I could pull off a great look but to be honest it wasn’t difficult because I took my time. Anything was better that keeping the original roof as it was simple unusable as a room.
Brilliant! Well done. I’m doing this shortly. Was going to PVC clad the ceiling but I think I’ll plasterboard now, after seeing this👍🏼
I considered the PVC option but it would have cost more and also taken more of my time so I went lightweight plasterboard, good luck with yours!
@@LyricGrace What thickness plasterboard did you get? I thought 9.5mm was about the thinnest
@@m80prs I can’t actually remember the thickness, I went for the thinness, lightest one available in B&Q
Thank you so much for sharing this. Perfect solution and affordable too. Inspired!
No problem, glad you liked it
Brilliant Jane. Well-done.
Thank you
Great job! My husband and I are planning to do the same. Please can you kindly do an update on how it’s holding up? Thanks.
WOW that looks amazing,im thinking of coving mine,so thank you for your video.
No problem, glad it was helpful. Good luck with yours
Brilliant job well done and thanks for showing us!
Great job well done looking for more projects
I am too always looking for things to do 😂
This is brilliant! We are looking for a low cost solution to warming up my Mum's conservatory in the winter and I saw your video. A great diy solution and very inspiring, well done 👏 👏
Thanks for your comments, good luck if you decide to try it
Cracking job ,bet your well happy credit to you 🥳🥳👍👍
Great job. But what does it look like from outside with the silver cladding through the Polycarbonate/glass roof? can you post a Photo
Thank you for uploading your Great Video & you done a Fantastic job & you have saved Many People alot of Money as for myself I now going to get my m8 to do mine,, Again Thank you
Thats great to know, glad it helped you. Enjoy yours when its done!
Thankyou for sharing, inspirational ❤️
Wow amazing girl power
I’m thinking of this but with white cladding only temp as hope to hv new roof in summer
Go for it! Mines sort of temp as we hope to have an extension in the future but need to save up first!
Very impressive ...girl power!
Thanks, it’s like crafting but on a bigger scale!
Absoultly amazing well done , I am doing this to mine so I am grateful for the vid.. 😘
Good effort on your own there!
Pricing this up real soon. It’s either ice or fire in our conservatory and the roof is pretty yucky too.
really helped me thank you
So helpful! Thank you! 💙
Just watched this, didn’t know you could do this, I can see winter project coming along for us both, thank you for the video and well done
No problem, I’ve just answered your email too. Good luck!
Excellent work!
Well done well impressed with what you did. You saved a-lot of money and that is what its all about 👍
amazing good on you , looking to do ours at some point , pat yourself on the back
Looks great! What were the dimensions of the wood batons that you used please?😊
It looks great, really good !!!
thank you for posting it, we’re planing to do exactly this and you have convinced us that we can do it !! Thank you!!!!
You definitely can, just take your time.
Any update on how warm is it in the winter season?
Looks good....from inside but I can't imagine it does from the outside....
As for condensation , yes you've made a good job of sealing inside..but I can't see any ventilation to allow condensation to exit.
Any condensation can now freeze in winter and expand. After a winter going into spring/summer you may see some cracks or damp spots in your plasterboard.
Thanks for your comments, its been up almost two years now and theres absolutely no issue with any condensation and you don't see much different from outside it just looks white.
Cracking job, you should be very very pleased with yourself.
Thank you
The rafters you fixed the timber too are designed to take water and run to the guttering. If you have not hit the centre then you will likely get leaks.
Hi there,
Fantastic job, well done.
Do you get any moisture/ condensation problems at all and are you still seeing the benefits?
About to start mine as the next project
Thanks 😊
Nice work! Also about to start a similar job on ours but worried about the weight of batons, especially as ours doesn't have a dwarf brick wall at the base. May just use Celotex in between the joists and plasterboard over it. Did you also paint/cover the outside of the roof at all?
No I didn't do anything outside, it doesn't look much different out there tbh. Good luck!
Well done .. love what you've done. Have you had any damp/mould problems..?
You should be proud of yourself 👍
Thanks for the comments, no nothing at all with damp, the key is def to leave air circulation gaps!
Thats great.. where are the circultion gaps?
@@philmartin904 between the first layer of wood and the insulation roll then between the roll and the boarding, nothing is touching to leave room for air flow
This video inspired me to have a crack at this myself. I’m following the same idea with same materials. I’m just doing a lean-to so it’s a bit easier. I got the insulation up 95% yesterday. Despite it being a cold night, down to 1 degree, it definitely made a difference. I have a Dyson fan that logs temps so I can compare quite clearly before and after. Between 6-9pm it was 2 degree’s warmer with the insulation. It also warmed up quicker in the morning. It’s a sunny January day, 2 degree’s outside but the conservatory is 22 degree’s and warming the house up! That’s definitely better than before.
Brilliant, glad to hear it’s helped you. Good luck with finishing
This is amazing, you've done a great job. We've just had some quotes to insulate our conservatory and its coming out silly prices so thinking of doing myself and came across your video and i'm inspired! Will definitely save a few grand too! Thanks x
Brill, glad I’ve helped. It’s really not that difficult, if I can do it anyone can! Good luck with your project.
@@LyricGrace Thanks. How's it been 1 year on? Have you had any problems with damp / ventilation?
Hi Jane,
I’m thinking to this exact same thing in order to make our conservatory warmer so we can use it as a dining room at Christmas. I just wondered has it been okay with the plasterboard in regard to weight bearing ? Thankyou
Liam
Nice job going to do it myself think pretty much as I plan to do it.
Thanks for your comment, good luck with yours!
I was just thinking about doing this to mine, but worried that it was complicated but you’ve shown me that I could do it! Brill video.
i WAS THINKING OF DOING THIS MYSELF AND DECIDED TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD THE SAME IDEA. Seems there is! I did wonder what is the visual effect from the outside would be as mine is a glass roof.
Wow well done you've done a fabulous job, just watched this as I'm helping a mate do his so wanted to know what I'm doing!!!,
Well done! Very impressive for a lady to do this type of work! Great video thanks for sharing
I absolutely love this video and you have completely inspired me to do my own conservatory. We have been quoted £2000 to have ours done and they freaked me out as said they ensure they ventilate it right which means no damp and that’s the only thing I’m worried about haha. One thing I just want to check is how can I ensure I ventilate it? As we have the same conservatory roof as you did and that always gets damp when the kitchen door is open. Have you had any issues? I have next week off work and already planning on where to start! Thanks 😊
The jointing tape is for all joins to prevent cracking when the boards move just so you all know. If you don’t it will crack maybe not straight away but it will over a about 1y.
Thank you for the explanation
This is amazing! Well done! We are about to start ours. I’d love to see the finish article, I love the light fitting too.
Thanks, It's pretty much the same as you see on the finished two sides, except all 3 are now done! Looks a lot better than I thought it would to be honest, I surprised myself!
You did a great job. Its been almost 2 years, is it worm enough in winters ? Do you always need radiator on in winters ?
Did you do anything about big glass windows ?
Was insulation between 2 layers of wood and for 1st layer did you drill screw through pvc ?
You video is an inspiration to many looking to use it all year round 👍🏻
What a brilliant job. And extremely well documented. This is the best one line and will motivate me to do ours. Top.
Great, thanks for the comment. Glad it helped you.
Wow, amazing work!
Thank you
What a fantastic job you have done !
Thank you
Good job. Well done.
Thank you
I'm wanting to do my conservatory so I can use it as office space and quotes are like 3k looking at this vid is making me want to do my own
My goodness you have done it yourself? :D Such a amazing woman!
After watching this I will do the same with my misses :D Well done anyway because this is very good job ;)
Thanks, good luck with yours!
Amazing idea! How is this holding up after a year now?
It’s fab thanks, looks exactly the same, no cracks etc
Now 1 yr on do you think roof was worth doing.
Nice video, easy to understand, thankyou
Yes most definitely, we used it for family meals at Christmas (moved the dining table in and extended it) as well as for the year round play room, def could not have done that with the old roof
Hi, Great video and credit too you, just one thing have you noticed any difference regarding condensation.
This is excellent ! very well done. I have just finished mine aswell.
Fab video! Do you mind me asking if there's a reduction in outside noise? ( Not just from rain) I have some really noisy neighbours
Yes def but I’m not sure about neighbours noise, I’m lucky to live in a quiet area. There’s def less noise for example when helicopters fly over
Well done hope that you will do a great job take care 🤞👏🙋♂️🤞
Hi, I'm so impressed. You've done a fab job. You started telling us that you had quotes from professionals but didnt finish the sentence. Out of curiosity how much were you quoted?
To completely replace the roof was around £10K to do what I did with it I had quotes between £2.5k and £4k
Well done, a very interesting and informative video. Thanks
Thank you for your comment
Jane, fabulous video. Without sounding too patronising well done you. I am a handyman and a customer (also friend) directed me to your video to ask if I can do this! Apart from arm ache I am now 100% certain that seeing your finished work I can do it too. I Have plaster boarded a few normal ceilings but never a conservatory!!!
My question: as its a year later may I ask, have you noticed any condensation problems coming through from the insulation to the original corrugated plastic roof? I am assuming you took advice and the silver insulation wrap has taken care of that? Fantastic.
Hi thanks for the comments. So it’s been up about a year and a half now and there’s been absolutely no problem with condensation I think the key is getting the gaps between the roof and the foil and then the foil and the plaster boards.
From what I was researching when I was researching mine those gaps stop the condensation because the air can move around freely. I have no doubt you can get it done if I can do it with no real training I’m sure you can as a handyman! Definitely have aching arms after doing it though!
Hello, love the video, I've followed it, carbon copy.
I'm having a bit of a struggle with my first plasterboard, particularly the holding up with hand, head, shoulder & prayers, whilst screwing in with my free hand holding a impact driver....
Have you got any tips on how one archives on ones own? 😢 😅
It’s flipping hard! I did it alone and yes used a tall step ladder to wedge it in with my head, shoulder etc then once you have a couple of screws in you can concentrate on the rest. I consider myself strong but even I was swearing! Sometimes I found it was better to start at the bottom and once you have ine onone on easier to wedge the next one next to it
Really well done and really informative video
Thank you
Looks great, well done you. Where is your room thermometer from please?
Hi, thank you for your video- I've found it extremely helpful! I notice you completed this project two years ago, have you noticed any issues with condensation or damp at all between the outer roof and the inner ceiling? I am keen to try this project myself but a little online research is giving me a few niggling doubts! As you have completed it some time ago, it would be great to hear how it's getting on and indeed if you have noticed any issues with it at all? How old is your roof roughly and did you have to make a watertight seal before installing the insulation?
Thank you :)
great job
Excellent job. Ill be getting you to do mine !
Lol, if only I had the time!
Hi. Thanks for the video - very informative. What did you do at the eaves/edges (where walls meet the roof)? Did you effectively make a vapour barrier using the insulation? Is there some airflow between top of insulation and the roof? Insulation and air tightness whilst avoiding condensation confuses me. Thanks again. Matt
I ended up filling the larger gaps with expanding foam, followed by filler and paint, the very small gaps I’ve left. Yes there is def airflow between the roof and insulation and then the insulation and boards. I know because there’s no condensation etc and before I used the foam I could feel it. The airflow still happens because of the way the conservatory roof is attached. Me putting a seal on doesn’t change that.
Did mine at my last house exactly the same a d no problems what so ever
Hi great job have you encountered any problems in the time its been insulated and has it made a differance to the room temp ?
@@robuk1515 thanks for asking, not had any issues looks exactly the same. Temp is vastly improved in winter and far cooler in summer, usable all year round now.
Hi loved your video, I need to do mine, just wondering how much difference it made with the heat in summer, did it stop it getting super hot? Brilliant tutorial, looks fab x
Yes it’s perfectly useable in the summer now, yes it’s warm but no where near the 45C of previous summers in there!!! It’s just normal house warm now
Brilliant thank you, could you tell me what drill bit you used please? I couldn't see it on your list in the description.
This is seriously impressive 👌 I’m a professional painter and decorator and I had a joiner come out to price up doing the exact same for me, after watching this I am 100% going to give it a bash myself. What size wooden battens did you use? I also need to do something with the exterior of ours as it has started leaking in some places, think I will leave that to the roofer though haha!
So sorry not sure exactly what size batons I used as it was over a year ago now, at a guess they were roughly 1” x 2” but my local timber merchant didn’t have that exact size so I got nearest to it I think. Good luck! Over a year on and still doing fine 👍🏻
@@LyricGrace Hi, this video is very good. Impressive! Is it still standing :)? I am thinking of doing the same thing myself but my big worry is that leaks later on would ruin it. Do you know or do you know of a good DIY video where they talk about checking the roof for leaks?
Hi great job well done, could you confirm if this has made a big difference in the winter? We have same conservatory with no heating, will this do the job to keep it warm? Again really well done ;)
Thanks for commenting. So you might of seen my previous comments. The conservatory isn’t actually heated apart from a small oil radiator, so if the door is not been open, it’s still chilly. However, the massive difference is that if I leave the door open and the room equalises with the house temperature, it keeps its temperature far far better than it did before so essentially it’s more of a usable room.
Great Work! And on such a small budget. Well Done. Only question is, what does it look like from the outside?
Looking from the bedroom windows above it doesn’t look much different , I thought it would look maybe shiny or metallic but it doesn’t it just looks like a darker version of the original roof. When it’s night time and the lights are on inside obvs you can’t see the light shining up anymore if that makes sense.
Really good. What are the wooden batton dimensions.
I can't remember exactly but I think they were roughly 1 inch x 2 inch
Not sure if this has been asked already, but have you noticed any plasterboard cracking over the summer? Thansk.
No there has been no movement or cracks appear so far.
@@LyricGrace thanks. That’s encouraging.
Wow fantastic job! love it! and well done for doing it yourself! I am really inspired. I would like to do the same for our conservatory, thanks for such a fab video! it's incredibly helpful :-D and what a good price you managed to do it all for - Go You!
Thank you
Hi , love the video . Do you think I could put the batten on over the insulation and put the plaster boards on the same batten . Was thinking of tape or glue , pins etc to hold insulation and do one batten at a time holding it up . Would much appreciate your thoughts . Philip
I'm not sure I fully understand the question but if you are asking if one baton is enough I'd say no, you must have air flow on each side of the insulation hence I had to baton twice. Hope that is what you were asking?
@@LyricGrace air flow ? Would definitely reduce that . Thank you
Very impressed. What brand did you use to join the plaster board? Can you post a link?
I tried a plaster tape on one join but didn’t bother with the rest, it didn’t need it and hasn’t shown any sign of cracking so all good
Hat's off for you giving it a go but every one of those joints must of cracked by now...?
Hi, thanks for your comment. But no actually it’s over a year on and not a single crack, looks just as it did when it was finished.
