Westland (& Filson) "Coldfoot Whiskey" Review

- Westland Distillery and Filson Outfitters have teamed up to bring us a whiskey that pays homage to the gold-hungry pioneers of the Alaskan frontier. Rex & Daniel sample and compare to other Westland expressions.

There is some yeast experimentation in Scotland but generally, especially in LARGE distilleries, they are completely focused on yield.

Watching this channel is watching one man's (Rex) devolution. Like looking at the picture of Lincoln before and after the Civil War. Apparently mooching whiskey this hard takes a real toll on the body and mind.
Daniel's "J. Peterman" approach to whiskey storytelling is what we need at this point. That's a marketing technique that barely been tapped into.

Never thought I'd see Rex showing us his 'Q-face"...
For me, most surprising thing about the Westland distillery tour was the taste of their "beer" that was finished fermenting and ready for distillation. Since there is no hops, I expected it to be sweet and bland, but it was tart and fruity and complex. It tasted like a belgian sour ale. I would drink that happily just as it was. I don't remember if they said exactly which yeast it was, but they did say that they don't use a sour mash process because they want to ensure the yeast doesn't drift and they get a reset by using fresh yeast every time. After tasting that, I do hope more distilleries experiment with yeast strains that aren't focused primarily on yield.
On a different note, I found it odd that Daniel said Coldfoot tastes like a classic middle-of-the-plate highland, like Deanston, Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie, because I don't think those 3 distilleries taste alike. To me it's like saying the new Ford Bronco has really nailed the classic 4x4 formula in the manner of Jeep, Holden, and Skoda. Just one man's opinion, or course.

I rarely buy bourbon, so I have yet to ever try a Westland even though it's all over the place up here. But while in the Total Wine store with 2 bottles of scotch, I did direct another TW customer to buy a Westland due to your love for it.🤘🎸🎶🥁✌
Yes, Rex counters Daniel. Daniel nerdgasms useful information all over the camera and Rex makes sure that information dies a horrible, premature death. Rex ensures that we'll never know too much, or much of anything, really.
I grew up in Alaska. The Village only had about 70 people. My mom was the town teacher and my dad was a bush pilot that flew the supply runs to keep the town fed. I had a husky named Sundance that was part wolf.
At least that's what I like to tell people that have no clue about Alaska
Just got my bottle of this yesterday! Love the earthy notes on this, went back and forth between it and a Westland Cask 579 for my after dinner whiskey last night. Cheers gents; well, gent and Rex
OMG. Silver dollar city in the Ozarks. We would go there on occasion when I was a kid. It was a drive since my grandparents lived on the the lake outside of Camden.
When I saw that bag I thought it was a bottle of Lea and Perrins.

Another problem in Scotland is the issue of transparency. We've seen Compass Box get into trouble with the Scotch Whisky Association on numerous occasions for using staves, listing the age and distillery of whisky in their blends, for being too 'honest' about their presentation. I would love to see real experimentation in Scotch whisky with yeast and maybe even allowing different wood finishes like the 'Method And Madness' range but tradition dictates. Good casks are getting harder to get so something has to give.
You can always count on Rex to come prepared with explosions of quality & freshness.
I have one Filson clothing item. It's a kind of thick shirt-jacket. It's very well made. It's very warm. I love it. But its retail price was something completely absurd. I got it during a clearance sale from an e-tailer. So if someone gives you something made by Filson or you find it on deep discount, it's worth checking out. Otherwise, nobody should be spending that much on work/outdoor wear.

I love Filson, their clothes are incredibly expensive, but you will pass them down through generations after working in them for 40 years. Also, on behalf of all Alaskan's: F*ck that sh*t in general. It isn't the gold rush anymore.
Also as of this year we finally have an Alaskan single malt you guys should try. I keep trying to bring some to Austin when I visit but I keep drinking it and it sells too fast for me to get some in the last few days before I travel.

Filson now sells over-priced 'outdoor wear'....think Huckberry or LL Bean. In fact some of their stuff may be on Huckberry. So I'm guessing this is also an over-priced whiskey, since that is part of the Filson marketing Model...

12:05 This section of the video had me wondering if different grain produced whiskey reacts to different barrels differently. If so, has anybody ever taken the time to see how Grain A reacts to Barrel A, B, and C (Then the same with Grain B, C, D, etc.) I would think studying the interactions to learn how you could manipulate your whiskey would be extremely valuable information.
I suppose one issue immediately would be that you have to start with new barrels and then you could use your used barrels to have the appropriate amount of control in the variables. However, that would require a great deal of investment depending on how much depth there is to using used barrels.

Unrelated to the video, sorry. Just thought I would put this here as the answer was in another episode and I'm tired of looking for it. over the last few weeks I have noticed that I am unable to taste the Smoke in most whiskeys. I get all the other flavors but almost always miss the smoke I usually get from Islays. Even Lagavulin couldn't bring the smoke out. Any thoughts on how to fix this or what might be causing this? Thanks either Daniel or Tribe!

Any tips for getting over a "Proof" measuring contest? I tried a Knob Creek Single Barrel(120 Proof) and it's made all other whiskeys taste not full-bodied at all. I can't afford to buy all barrel proof whiskeysssss

Sorry Rex, but your Mooch level just plummeted. Without rewinding, I remember at least three mentions of Deanston (by Daniel) within the first half of the video..... and a Deanston bottle was never produced. If you don't ask, you will not receive. You did not ask, therefore your Mooch level must be dropped.
Asking what happened to Rex? Obviously the weight of carrying the show is a lot.
