    The Galaxy is actually the bigger ship going by displacement so it's not unreasonable that a modernized and deliberately militarized version of it would be able to contend with a Sovereign class.

    • @Skirne
      @Skirne 2 роки тому +8

      Agreed. The original Galaxy class was 60% empty space. This allowed for extraordinary mission flexibility, and it was always intended to be essentially a mobile embassy/disaster relief vessel/long range explorer. But fill in all those blank spots and you could pack in a huge amount of military-specific hardware. And the shields/phasers were already top notch.

    • @coldbluelight1985
      @coldbluelight1985 2 роки тому +5

      @@Skirne Definitely. Likewise if you went a step further and stripped out some of the more luxury oriented features like the holodecks, arboretum etc. There is a lot of space to work with installing things like extra shield generators or aux power generation, expanded torpedo magazines or hanger space. You could even design an entire new saucer section for it that was exclusively military focused and just swap it on whenever needed.
      The whole theoretically swap-able saucer ability was criminally underused in the series. It gives the design so much potential flexibility.
      As for how it stacks up overall to a Sovereign when fully militarized though, I'd say the Galaxy would probably have the advantage in phasers and overall survivability, with the Sovereign having an edge in torpedoes and manoeuvrability.

    I never got the idea that the Sovereign was any kind of combat powerhouse. We saw it in three movies and in all of them it got heavily trashed.
    I know it's all plot that determines how a ship handles itself in battle on-screen, but the Sovereign seemed to follow the post Dominion War strategy of "smaller ship, smaller crew and make up the difference with tech" whereas the Galaxy was "let's put everything we got into this ship."
    That the Galaxy wasn't a better battleship is more because it wasn't designed for that role than that it wasn't capable of handling itself. A Galaxy class was essentially a mobile star base with tons of scientific and crew resources for long missions away from Federation space.

      on paper a war galaxy if maxed to the max potential with 2370s tech should be able to beat a sovereign.
      my reasoning
      more space for redundant power systems for shields and phasers.
      the galaxy could house multiple warp cores. imagin a warp core directly to fuel just the phasers? the galaxy class should be able to on paper cripple a ship with just one phaser strike. or that warp core to give it secondary shielding.
      the galaxy could house a super sized quantum torpedo launcher that could burst fire quantum torpedoes.
      the galaxy could hold even more torpedoes.
      the galaxy class could be given evne thicker hull armor and hull plating.

    The primary difference between the two ships comes down to the Sovereign's armor, speed and bigger power-plant. From a weapons standpoint they are moderately matched (Sovereign has more torpedo tubes). If a Sovereign were a 10, the Galaxy Refit would be like an 8 or maybe, if one is generous, 9. A good captain could certainly win using the Galaxy.

    I think people forget how much of a beast the galaxy class was even though it wasn’t designed for war. At the time it was launched it was the most powerful ship of the federation. At its first encounter with the borg they had the cube on the ropes prior to them adapting. Of course technology advances and better ships are built but the old ones get refitted. I don’t know why multiple launchers weren’t installed because they definitely had room for it. Also even with only 1 fwd launcher it could fire multiple torpedoes at once making up for not having multiple launchers. The galaxy class is always judged against later ships never against contemporary ships. An updated galaxy class with armor added would be more of a match for anything. The Enterprise D took on a large borg cube successfully in Picard season 3 with limited weapons.

    I agree with the outcome. The Galaxy class should have overwhelming power production and wide angle phasor arrays compared to the Sovereign class, however the Sovereign class should clearly win on torpedoes per second, armor and mobility. I also agree with the nearly equal shielding as although the Galaxy class would have had significantly greater power production, it also had a significantly larger shield bubble due to the size which it would be forced to maintain.
    Overall, the most unrealistic thing about that battle is how nimble the Galaxy class seems in comparison to the Sovereign class. I also think that the Galaxy class would have suffered more random "lucky shots" as compared to the Sovereign as the increased size of the shield grid would likely lead to random gaps forming during continuous bombardment. However, I think that the Galaxy class's phasor array, for as buffed as it is, still isn't as powerful as it should be compared to lore and on screen experience. At first encounter with the Borg, the Enterprise straight up melted half a Borg cube with a few overpowered shots from their main saucer phasor array. I think this level of sheer power should be similar to the Sovereign's rapid fire quantum torpedoes which could be used to gain decisive victory under certain conditions. Although the phasor array may no longer be effective against the Borg, the main array on the Galaxy class should minimally be capable of instantly vaporizing 3-4 Miranda class ships with single shots while their shields are down.

    The Refit Galaxy especially if it had Quantum Torpedo's would be a very interesting fight. I think the ships are close in terms of strength with the Sovereign having somewhat more powerful phasers and ablative armour whilst the Galaxy class would have the larger internal volume for additional refits and a massive shuttlebay that could be used for fighters. I think its going to be down to who is commanding each ship. Picard in a Sovereign vs Riker in an Galaxy Refit would be the Hathaway all over again

    The Sovereign carries Type XII phaser arrays which are substantially more powerful than a Galaxy Class's Type X. But, one assumes that the Galaxy Refit had the Type X strips removed and replaced with Type XII. At that point the Sovereign still wins due to its more powerful power plant, but the difference is marginal.

    • @cosmeticscameo8277
      @cosmeticscameo8277 2 роки тому +1

      nope if galaxy has the same phaser arrays as the sovereign galaxy would have bigger phaser arrays hence it would punch much harder. the galaxy class could carry a larger warp core if needed.

    • @crownprincesebastianjohano7069
      @crownprincesebastianjohano7069 2 роки тому

      @@cosmeticscameo8277 Physical length of the array doesn't equal more power at a geometric rate. The smaller strip on the ventral secondary hull has as much punch as the one on the saucer. Power-plant, and other generators, dictate the relative phaser output from ship to ship with the same phaser types, which is why the Type X on a Galaxy Class is more powerful than the Type X on a Norway Class. And while Starfleet could install a new warp core, or already has, there is nothing in canon to suggest the Galaxy's power output is greater. The Sovereign is consistently referred to in materials of the time it was introduced as being considerably faster than the Galaxy Class and having far superior shields than even the Galaxy refits seen during the Dominion War.

      @cosmeticscameo8277 2 роки тому +1

      @@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 from what i see is the war refits galaxies shown in ds9 were basically just given the most basic up grades. half of the galaxies were basically half empty
      starfleet decided not to dump any more resources on the galaxy class and focused more on the other classes makes sense. you can only be in on spot at any time. you could have a whole group of defiants or 3-4 akiras or 2-3 sovereigns for every 1 galaxy.
      if they could, a maxed out galaxy class would be super scary like a mini scimitar with multiple warp cores to add redundant power systems. secondary shields. more biggre QT launchers. more phasers more of basically everything. but you would have diminishing returns i get it.

    As you stated, the Sovereign was designed, from the ground up, to be something that could take on the Borg. Whereas the Galaxy's ethos was exploration. The Galaxy class is only about a decade older than the Sovereign, but it would have many upgrades done, throughout it's lifespan, and I've said before it can make a formidable weapons platform. However, I do feel a Sovereign should still win this one, fairly comfortably. Maybe put 2 AI's against each other, and watch the show?

      I feel like the Sovereign's AI did a terrible job of using its advantages and just placed sitting duck. A war refit galaxy is impressive and in the hands of a well seasoned veteran crew it could possible beat a sovereign but not as handily as this. Maybe the sovereign was crewed by cadets?

  • @cosmeticscameo8277

    the sovereign is just better because for the price of on galaxy you could probably build 2-3 soverigns. better rate on return. that's what i can understand from reading military cost vs reward info out there. hence why no one builds battlships anymore and even carriers are dubious now with how far you can shoot missiles, how hard to anti missile, and accuracy of missiles. hence best bet would be to build more smaller ships to spread it out.

    • @RetroBadgerGaming
      @RetroBadgerGaming  2 роки тому +1

      That’s good reasoning. Yes, in the real world large ships, excluding aircraft carriers are very much a thing of the past. I suppose their less of a target and more stealthy being smaller as well. I still see the value in aircraft carriers, for global power projection. Although, they might as well paint a big bullseye on them.

Yes, post-Dominion wars the Galaxy class and others would likely benefit from some technology upgrades, but those upgrades would probably not help the structural weaknesses that are inherent in the Galaxy vs a ship that while not a dedicated warship was designed with battling the Borg in mind. I think you really see that in the fact that none of the shields went down on the RGB mod, but the Sovereign had multiple arcs fail. As you said, the RGB mod should make it an 8 vs a 10 in the Sovereign.
