Firefighter Breaks Car Window to Access Blocked Fire Hydrant

- A New York City firefighter broke a car's windows to access a blocked fire hydrant. He then threaded the firehose through the car and attached it to the hydrant. They were fighting a major four-alarm blaze in the Bronx that destroyed multiple businesses. As for the owner of the car, reports say he's racked up 33 fire hydrant violations in the last two years. The violations totaled more than $9,000.

As a career firefighter with more than 20 years service, I have a rather strong opinion on this. This was 100% unnecessary and nothing more than a big show of power. Yeah, it looked cool in the movie "Backdraft", but not cool in reality. I have a huge issue with blocking hydrants, but that connection could have been made over or around the car. This was simply "I'm a bad-ass" theatrics, that makes the firefighters look as bad as the person who blocked the hydrant.
We watched Backdraft recently and couldn't work out what they were doing that for there even. It was obvious they could just go over the car in fact it would have been quicker to do that. Didn't look cool in the slightest.
Also seems like it wasted alot of time too. Not saying the car owner is completely faultless, he is pretty close to the hydrant. But he didn't make it so inaccessible to the point that window breaking was necessary. It's hard to pin blame in this one, both parties could've easily done something to avoid this.
Bro took 5 minutes to break the windows and connect it up when the pipe flow would have been better over the hood of the car and 5 minutes of them ACTUALLY TACKLING THE FIRE. if someone lost a life, I'm sure the family could sue

I'm with you on this one. Unnecessary procedure for sure not to mention the time it took to break out the windows. I don't care how many violations this person had. I still think it was just a show of power. They could have easily put it over the car hood with absolutely no impedance of water flow.

Definitely unnecessary and definitely did it to make a point but I suppose he had it coming. 33 violations in 2 years is ridiculous.
It was absolutely necessary for the engineer to act swiftly. By doing so, they managed to direct water onto the fire accurately and maintain proper pressure. If they hadn't acted quickly, putting the hose over the roof could have damaged it and disrupted the water pressure. Similarly, maneuvering around the back of the vehicle could have caused kinks, further affecting the water pressure.

Did they say the owner was a guy? Maybe he identifies as a they, it, or is a transgender? We need to get this straightened out before someone gets offended and there's a lawsuit.
The chief said time is of the essence. So standing there breaking two windows and threading the hose through the windows is less time consiming than just draping it over top? Get out of here.
Yeah that’s what I was thnkg. Throw the hose over the car to see if it reaches or break 2 car windows with at least 2-4 attempts on each window?

they cannot run the hose over the car or around because it will mess up the water pressure. DONT PARK BLOCKING HYDRANTS.
Justice? Is it the FD’s job to administer justice?
@@megsleyIsn’t that what’s happening anyway when they put it through the car in this instance? Genuinely asking because it seems like the water pressure in this case would be affected similarly since the hose has to be lifted and angled through the car’s windows and draped back down to the hydrant.
@@megsleyRaising the hose 8 inches higher over the roof would have made zero difference. As it was the hose made two turns in the car windows.

That one was like 1 foot.
Stop it, now you're reaching. People aren't that daft.
Parking is difficult to come by in nyc, ppl generally do NOT give 15 feet, they just don't, I rarely see ppl give 5, much less 10 feet, but ppl definitely try to not be directly in front of it. That firefighter was over the top. Fire fighters don't run plates, so I wonder if he was extra like that because of the neighborhood. One would think that he wasted time breaking 4 windows when it would've been faster to throw the hose over the top, or just break 2, but all 4 door windows?
@@DroneStrike1776 that firefighter sure was though. same with that driver
@@NottABlack In this one it looks like just two. At 1:02, there is a different car with 4 windows broken because the pillar is right at the hose connection and they probably had to change which window to get a better angle.
Righteousness trumps common sense again. Threading through the windows in this case took longer and was not as direct a path for the hose. But yeah, you really showed that driver.
Rent free.
I lived in Manhattan. I witnessed fireman park their personal cars in front of the fire house in front of the fire hydrant in Greenwich village. They put their placard on the dashboard.
Okay, but they can do that. What they can likely also do to avoid the problem you’re stating is have the city put up signs going up and down the block “fire department personnel parking only.” Similar to the way they put up no parking signs or handicapped access signs for space we civilians can’t park. The residents who live adjacent to the fire house can find some other block to park their cars on. If parking is that tight, it will only be worse for the residents. It will definitely be a case of “be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.”
@@ryanpaazok? I’m pretty sure the hydrant in front of the fire house is the last hydrant that will ever have to be used. Also most placards say things like “Fire Department vehicle” or “authorized vehicle”
that was so unnecessary, do you know how much time they wasted bashing in that window, plus safety glass is usually safe, hence the name, but some pieces still remain sharp and can puncture the hose.
@@kareemalmond not as much time as the owner who's been doing parking illegally near the fire hydrants 33 times before his punishment is met. You think at least at some point he should have learned his lesson that way but too bad it had to be done the hard way.

He took it far!!!
Unnecessary , ego induced breaking of those window , 🤤
It really doesn't matter if the firefighters COULD have snaked the hose a different way, the point is they don't HAVE to.
So the lesson to be learned is simple - don't want your windows smashed out, don't park anywhere near a hydrant.
This isn't rocket science.
Also those hoses need to run in as straight a line as possible to get maximum flow. The more kinks and turns the hose has the worse the water pressure would be. So while it could be "snaked" around the car it would slow the water down.
You can try it with a garden hose, add a bunch of kinks and loops to a garden hose and the pressure will be much lower.
15 feet.😂
Hopefully they turned on the hose directly on the car afterwards... to ensure there were no smoldering embers inside the car.
Law breaker and abuse of power. Both parties were wrong.
No. The guy parked illegally was wrong. The hose needs to be straight to avoid kinks, it cannot go over, under, around the front or back... the fire just HAPPENED to at a 120° angle from the fire hydrant.
@@sheogorath-the-incrazyit wouldn't have gotten ANY kinks going OVER with the type of pressure used. This was overzealous

Watch the end of the video where the guy measures it. NOTHING tells me that the space near the hydrant isn't just another parking space. They should paint a striped pattern across the area like those between interstates and exit/entrance ramps. Make it CLEAR that you aren't supposed to be there.
