- The college basketball game between Gonzaga and Michigan State was played on the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier located in San Diego. This meant the game was held outdoors and it made for a very unique environment. This was the first Carrier Classic game since 2012 when San Diego State and Syracuse faced off on the USS Midway in San Diego.

As someone living outside the US and doesnt have a clear picture of how massive a carrier is. This game did it for me. All I have to say is damn.
And this isn’t even the largest class. There is still the Gerald R. Ford class. Which is almost a third larger than this.

Im actually on the lincoln right now but had duty but was still cool cause i got to see a few players leaving the ship and a bunch of people got stuff from the players
The Naval Academy should play all their home games on board a ship at sea. Might be a genuine home court advantage for them.

I worked for the Navy (as a civilian) as a personal financial counselor. It was a wonderful job…helping young Navy personnel deal with $$ for the first time. I was fortunate enough to spend a week on an aircraft carrier teaching classes and meeting with personnel. I was AMAZED at how 19-22 years olds ran that ship!
Great win for the Zags. This is the reason why they are the #2 team in the country. Second game of the season and they are going toe to toe with MSU instead of a cupcake. If you haven’t been on an aircraft carrier, it’s hard to describe how massive they actually are. I stayed a night on the USS Yorktown in Charleston with my Boy Scout troop when I was 9, thirteen years later I distinctly remember that it felt like I was on an actual floating city

What I remember most about the 2012 game was that the wind played havoc with three-point shots so much that nobody made a three in the 2nd half because they stopped trying. It's a spectacular setting, but wind should never be a factor in a big game.
I was at the SDSU v Sarycuse game. Wind was so bad you could see the ball move in the air. They missed something like 18 of 18 threes, Cuse played a zone and we could not drive, could not shoot outside. A real thrashing, but I took my Dad and he loved it.
I can’t believe I missed it. I remember watching the first one & the president flew in & was in attendance. Greatest idea they ever had!💯🤟🦅🇺🇸

I was in viejas arena for SDSU vs BYU which was one of the wildest games I've seen in a while, and that game wasn't even the most attended game in San Diego that day...

I remember when Gonzaga played Pitt in the Armed Forces Classic in Okinawa, Japan and they had to cancel the game at halftime because it was so humid the floor wet and slippery like an ice rink. Wise move playing this in San Diego.

This happened in my city. Tickets were IMPOSSIBLE to get. As it should be, the tickets went to our faithful hardworking MILITARY MEMBERS....Its really good for the city too. Even when the Chargers were still here S.D. ain't the best SPORTS TOWN. Could be worse I guess. We still got the Padres.

Honestly, the last time SDSU played on the aircraft carrier it was a disaster. I don't think they will ever do that again. Come to think of it, last time they played outside was also a disaster. I don't recommend playing outside for any reason, ever.
what happened
@@daygomadecd3652 In 2012 they played on an aircraft carrier against Syracuse, and it was just a terrible game. The wind was blowing and the sun was shinning, and SDSU wasn't a huge three pointer team that year but they generally needed to knock down a good percentage of 3s to win. They went 1-18 that day from behind the arch. Syracuse was much smarter, and went 1-4 and basically just stopped shooting anything that wasn't within 5 feet of the basket. Final score was 62-49. Brutal.
Even more brutal was three years later when they played at Petco Park in one of those stupid games where they convert a baseball stadium to a basketball court (like they did the other night in Miller Park). SDSU played USD in the City Championship, and USD have a good team usually, but to be completely honest the only way they win is when SDSU takes them for granted. This was one of those times. Not to mention the rims were wonky, and the whole thing looked weird and like some alternative universe. It was 31-13 at halftime, and even though SDSU came back they still lost 53-48. Freaking brutal.
