Oh my goodness you literally made me laugh out loud at 5:28. I was NOT expecting that! On top of that she was just casually posing and you were like "hello!" 😅
The problem here is the built in TBC in these camcorders and Digital 8 units too, they make the image less saturated changing the colors and making them worse. You see the image is way better with TBC off.
Really? That is completely awesome. A lot of these silver camcorders look very similar. Are you certain it's the TR940, If so, its a great catch. How many scenes does it appear in ? I love spotting these old cameras in movies and figuring out what models they are!
@@techtoremember8096I saw a BTS photo of the segment, I matched the shape and buttons and the stickers of the camera to the 940. Not to mention the colour loss matched the footage! Not to mention the footage was steady too
Another great video my friend 👍 Love the design of these camcorders and HI8 XR definitely made a difference but not so much in this unit sadly. Clearly poor censor but yet the camera had all the great features like nightshot, steadyshot, and stereo microphone yet yes not so great resolution wise here. I do have a few standard HI8 units that give better quality then later HI8 XR units so definitely hit and miss across the range.
Hey Chris. Thank you for that. Yeah this camera I love the design and aesthetics but the picture is so bland. I really think the older Hi8 cameras before they cheapened the sensor had a more professional image. Night shot is definitely fun though ! And the long zoom and color viewfinder are nice
I have a Sony ccd-trv108 with the nightshot feature but it does not see through people's clothes. I'll bet back then it was nicknamed 'pervert mode' or 'pervert vision'. LOL 🤣
Haha. Sony made a modification to the cameras as soon as they found out about this feature. People figured out work arounds however by using certain filters. Was pretty funny stuff. pervert mode would be a good name!
@@techtoremember8096 I REMEMBER IN THE NINETIES THIS WAS A BIG DEAL AND THEY SOLD OUT IMMEDIATELY 😂 AND THEY COULDNT RECALL ALL OF THEM STILL A GOOD CAMERA THOUGH
I found the fix and those cameras have a EDIT function and you need to leave it on and leave TBC off and not use it for brand new tapes with fresh recordings, the result when i did it in my Hi8 XR TRV95E was very good it got the same vibrant colors you get in your 1994 normal Hi8 TR700 camera. I advert that this function is very limited to a few models and is not present in all Hi8 XR models.
@@techtoremember8096 Sadly the TR940 doesn't have the EDIT function located in "camera set" in the menu, but you can always turn off TBC to get better colors.
Oh thats too bad that it doesn't have the edit function. Never thought to look at the TBC. It's strange since a TBC is supposed to only improve the stability of the image and not mess with colors but I supposed in this case it does. Thanks for the insight.
@@techtoremember8096 At least the built in TBC in camcorders change the colors of the image making them a bit more washed out. That's why i'm starting to advertising everyone that want leave TBC on all the time especially if the recordings are fresh in brand new tapes or those tapes that are in a perfect shape so you don't get glitches even without TBC.
Strange, i was looking at images from my CCD-TR940 and they are very vibrant and resolute. In fact as i am about to embark on transferring them to a digital format I am trying ascertain what format and how in order to retain the image quality / resolution.
The only variable I can think of is the monitor you are using ...do you have your colors set to flat on the monitor or are they raised? I have noticed a few Sony camcorders with decidedly muted colors and this was one model. Most other Sony models did not exhibit this issue.
You should at least try the same tape recorded on the same camcorder with XR and play it back on the same camcorder and another camcorder without XR, So that way the recording will be the same only difference is in playback with and without XR.
That’s very good point However if the only way you can see XR is via playback in a XR camera that is very limiting- it’s common to have a dedicated playback deck in a setup - have you personally seen a difference with XR ?
@@techtoremember8096 No, haven't looked into it, I do have a Hi8 camcorder and specifically chose one with the XR option just in case a customer may have tapes recorded in that option, since there is no way of knowing if the tape is XR or not, I decided to capture every V8/Hi8 camcorder with it.
@@Capturing-Memories I discovered the problem and is the built in TBC in those camcorders and Digital 8 units too. They make the image less saturated with more washed out colors at the cost of leaving it on.
@@Capturing-Memories Also i forgot to mention it but steadyshot in those camera is not good because it also "shut off" the colors making them darker with the entire image being darker especially if you use it in low light.
If you can get yourself a camcorder or deck that does “pass through “ then connect your non digital 8 decks analog outputs into the pass through device and it works. I’ll be making a video about this soon !
@@techtoremember8096 which Windows version were you using for this method? There's also a few other softwares such as WinDV and ScenalayzerLive I think it's called to do it

TR models don't and TRV ones do, from what I've gathered researching the last few weeks All the different models though are very confusing though and then there's the situation that the older cameras may be better than the new ones!
