  • A full overview and demo of the Sony Hi8 XR stereo camcorder, model CCD-TR940, circa 1998. This model basically has all of the goodies Sony ever put into an analog camcorder for the consumer market, except a flip-out LCD screen. The XR system records 440 lines of resolution on Hi8 tapes, and 280 lines on standard grade 8mm tapes (as compared to 400 and 240 lines, respectively, for non-"XR" 8mm camcorders). Sony only offered Hi8 XR camcorders for a few years (around 1998 to 2000) before they eliminated all high-end analog camcorders from their lineup, in favor of their Digital8 series.

This was my very first Hi8 camera back when I was in college, the thing had excellent picture quality and it was built like a tank, I used it for many a storm chasing and concert. Finally got the infamous sony screen of death on it, but it lasted for quite a few years.

Back when Sony was building great Camcorders. 3:06 mmhhhh i loved it when yellow, orange or in general warm colours were used for backlighting. Today there would be blue freaking LEDs all over the place. Fancy full colour viewfinder. I remember this being such a huge novelity back then when nearly every viewfinder was just a small Black and white CRT. The recording button feature was something a lot of people underestimated. On my JVC GR-AX280 you could even set the time it recorded, all the way down to 1 second. Which was super handy for recording stop motion videos. Instead of manually pushing rec and stop you would always get exactly 1 second of recording. Even timed every few seconds so you could move the object or yourself and keep the hands of the camera as it recorded for you. Awesome this thing even had the regular Lamp for nightshot :D This would have been the PERFECT Blair Witch Project videocamera ;)

I have the CCD-TRV65, the highend for 1998 model with LCD flipout screen. Sony deleted the built-in light opting for their "smart shoe" and gave it a B&W viewfinder since the LCD was color. It shares a lot with this camcorder otherwise, even has a plastic molding for the viewfinder light sensor that isn't needed. The guts (CCD, tape transport) are identical otherwise.
These units are built like tanks. We had a 04 Hi8 model at work, and it was pretty flimsy...and it lacked the XR recording mode!

I got a CCD-TR65 for free recently. About the same as this model but has an flip-out LCD. I was very impressed by the HI8 XR quality of recording. Also my first camera to have a video input recording function.

So I can transfer my 8mm tapes to my PC in stereo with my Dazzle capture device with this?
Glad you are not false advertising..
Most ppl say these cams have stereo outputs, but they are mono..
Wish they made these wit firewire..
    Thanks for this vid..

They have one, but it has to be Digital8 version. You know what, I bought Sony's Hi8 XR model, and I watched all my tapes 12 yrs later, but I did not transferred them to PC. Maybe I will transfer them to HiFi VHS or something. I really love this format and my camera and I am still recording my trips onto 8 or Hi8 tapes. Wish I had VTR in it.

This is another really nice Sony camcorder! It is pretty similar to my Sony CCD-TR8E, but mine is much more basic (doesn't even have NightShot or InfoLithium, and the display has no yellow light built in)
What does Hi8 XR means? I thought it it would be something like S-VHS ET (recording Hi8 on standart Video8 cassettes) Am I right?
I'm looking forward to see some videos off that camcorder!
My last addition to my camcorder collectionwas a MiniDV camcorder wich unfortunately doesn't work.

I have the Sony TR3200E. It's pretty similar to this (also HI8 XR) but has manual control over iris/shutter/gain/white balance, although it doesn't have nightshot. I'm guessing Sony didn't sell too many in 1998 as the enthusiast camcorder market has already been usurped by mini DV. I never knew this model even existed!

Great video as always. I just picked up the TR-840 few weeks back and love it. Though I have much better professional DV cameras this is the sort of one I’d of actually own when I was a kid so wanted one like it again. I do also have a video 8 unit with flip out screen but it’s mono and wanted to upgrade to a stereo unit with slightly better picture, wasn’t bothered it missing a flip out screen. Anyways fab video (yes it was posted ages ago) but hope to keep seeing more camera videos from you 😊

hey another message ages into the future lol, do you also have the issue where you cant use nightshot without having the charger plugged in? whenever I try it my camera crashes and it only works when I record with the charger plugged in

    • @epicchris1985
      @epicchris1985 2 роки тому

@@1onexist hi! I don’t have that issue no, but normally putting a light on or night shot kills a faulty battery rather fast so it’s probably that. If ku works on the mains it’s definitely working so points to a bad battery that can’t handle that much output.

@hddr3 I got the 615 (basically sounds about the same as the 65 since it has the LCD flip out) about 3 years ago for only 200.
These were/are good cameras. I still use mine because of the manual focus and exposure modes.

Nice camera. You should put it on Camcorderpedia (yup, there is a wiki for old video cameras)!
Why does an 8mm camcorder require five heads for stereo? There is no depth multiplex recording like there is for VHS. Does this unit have a "shrunken head?" (like what JVC has on most of their VHS-C camcorders)

I was searching for a Video8 camcorder I picked up at a flea market last week and for some reason this video was the first that came up in the youtube search, a completely different model and standard. Then within the first 30 seconds you show the manual that fits a variety of models, including the CCD-TR87 that I was looking for. Funny how UA-cam was somehow able to sort it out for me! It has the same basic body, though it's black, and for some reason the sticker under the light bulb advertises "0.7 lux" instead of just "0 lux". Maybe the bulb in the 940 is more powerful?
Anyways, I now have a Digital8 Handycam and a Video8 Handycam, so would you recommend the 940 as a good Hi8 Handycam to get, or is there a better one worth getting?
