Open All Hours was set in a small corner shop in a town in Yorkshire and is still lauded for its clever writing, witty humor, and endearing characters. And who was responsible for these great Open All Hours characters? It’s all due to the Open All Hour cast of course.
The Open All Hours cast also included Lynda Baron as the quirky and chatty Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, and Maggie Ollerenshaw as Mavis, a local girl who catches Granville's eye. The chemistry between the cast members and their impeccable comedic timing is one of the show's highlights, making it a beloved and enduring sitcom.
Sadly, over the years, the Open All Hours cast has experienced the loss of some of its beloved members. In 2005, the legendary Ronnie Barker, who portrayed Arkwright, passed away at the age of 76. Barker's comedic genius and incredible talent made Arkwright one of the most memorable characters in British television history.
Another cast member who has since passed away is Lynda Baron, who portrayed Nurse Gladys Emmanuel. Baron, known for her exceptional comedic skills and unique voice, passed away in 2019 at the age of 78. Her portrayal of Nurse Gladys, with her distinct accent and eccentric personality, brought both the character and actress much fame.
Today, we’ll tell you the stories of the Open All Hours cast members who are no longer with us and their incredible careers and legacies. We’ll also catch up with 2 of the remaining cast members to see what they’ve been up to!

With the section with Mrs Blewett, they were getting her mixed up with another character Mrs Featherstone, who was portrayed by Stephanie Cole. Though they both had a very similar role, Blewett was a married woman, where as Featherston was known as the Black Widow. Kathy Staff has passed away, however Stephanie Cole has not.
So true... couldn't figure out why they never mentioned Stephanie Cole and also Still open all hours...If you are going to do one of these please get the info straight. We love them all.
@@nancysteele3670 Yes, the info is not 100%, but loved watching it. Kathy Staff and Stephanie Cole were both fantastic but there has been a mix up.
@@nancysteele3670they just about knackered this vid with all the misinformation didn't they. 🙄
Kathy staff Miss luke from crossroads but never mentioned here
An American with seemingly little knowledge of basic facts.
Open all hours was one of the very very best sitcomms ever !
Mavis ("Wavy Mavy") was never the girlfriend of Granville in the original shows. Not sure how you got that so wrong. Also Lynda Baron's last performance (released a few months before she died) was in the movie 'Dream Horse' alongside Toni Collette and Damian Lewis. It's actually a really good film and well worth watching. Lynda Baron wasn't in the original 1973 pilot episode of Open All Hours, the role of Nurse Gladys Emmanuel was played by Irish actress Sheila Brennan, who I believe is still alive and well at the time of writing. But what is scary is that I remember watching this show as a child and I've just realised that Ronnie Barker was in his late 40s when he started playing Arkwright. This means that I am now older than he was was in those early episodes!
Also he mentioned Ronnie Barker created Porridge which isn't true
I will look out for that one...Toni Collette is always worth a watch...
They get most of their so called FACTS wrong
I have to say I loved all these comedies They was the best and nothing comes next to them I'm so sorry for the actors no longer with us May they all rest in peace ❤️👏👏👏
Why was the video titled "How each open all hours cast member died" when you not once toild us how they died, only the date of WHEN they died. Misleading title.
Two comedy greats! Ronnie Barker & David Jason a pair of legends. Brilliant series.
4.19 is Stephanie Cole as Mrs Featherstone who effectively replaced Mrs Blewit for series 3 and 4.
Ronnie Barker was a great comic... he was also a great comedy writer..
He anonymously wrote many of the sketches for The Two Ronnies, using the pseudonym, "Gerald Wiley".
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great week!
@@FactsVerseUK Thank you very much, and wishing you the same!
Great show that doesn't need to be remade. It's a classic.
It has been remade, doapy.
@@davidpitulej9113the remake's ok but... no Arkwright 😢. and Nurse Gladys Emmanuele just died 😢😢
This is the problem when these American UA-cam channels (although it is branded as UK) talk about these British shows because they probably have a list of programmes they work through and aren't familiar with them and probably hadn't even heard of them and so do some quick research and make these videos
It ends up being full of mistakes and omissions, especially in the case where they don't even know who Kathy Staff or Stephanie Cole are and end up mixing them up. It would be better if they got someone to check these first
I hope you gave this video a thumbs down. Not sure who runs this channel but it's so full of mistakes on every video I've seen so far. I don't think they do much research, and it's clear they are not familiar with the subject material.
Most of the footage in the section about Kathy Staff was actually Stephanie Cole - another great surviving actress from this series.
Reply
Yes that was a silly mistake in this piece. Stephanie Cole deserved her own chapter, and how they could mix her up with Kathy Staff I don’t know. They look nothing alike.
@@brucehaldane3419 I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!!!!!!!
I agree. That was a hugh error.
Stephanie Cole was so funny in this series. She was also amazing in the Doc Martin series.
4:10 That’s Stephanie Cole, not Kathy Staff.
It was Kathy Staff at the beginning & end and Stephanie Cole in the middle.
@@marionbayley1351 Correct.
I know
Yeah the actress playing Mrs Featherstone and the gossip neighbour lady are not the same.
Later he also says all creatures large and small when it's actually says All Creatures Great And Small.
@@DanBen07 Yeah. Awful research.
David and Lynda went onto "Still Open All Hours" which also had Mavis. It was based around Granville inheriting the shop and running it with his son. David also appeared in two other shows with Ronnie before "open all hours"
Which shows were those please?
@@allanmahmod4264 Porridge as "Blanco" and one of the mini-shows in "seven of one" as a hired assassin
Your researchers missed a huge part of history related to the show, there is an entire follow on show after Ronnie Barker passed away, called, Still Open All Hours, where Granville ran the corner shop, it ran for several seasons and had many of the original cast members.
Yes, Still Open All Hours was an even better success, I believe. It's hard to find the episodes now.
I am convinced these inaccurate videos are scripted by AI.
Open All Hours was one of my favourite sitcoms of the 70s/80s, I loved every one of the characters and if I were asked to choose a favourite I couldn't they were all absolute legends, If it were to be re made with different actors it just wouldn't be the same in my opinion, rest in peace to all the great actors and actresses who have passed away, you will always be remembered God Bless you
Ronnie Barker was undoubtedly one of the greatest writer & performers T.V. has ever been seen. and David Jason complemented his performance in Open all Hours.
research needs to be done Stephanie Cole is a proper star and should not be confused with anyone Americans Duh
you need to redo this one as all of the cast have returned to Still Open All Hours which is still being made today
Stephanie Cole? Also Kathy Staff, Doris Luke in Crossroads. This show has also been remade as Still Open All Hours, with David Jason, Stephanie Cole, Linda Baron and Maggie Ollerensahw from the original series
I wouldn't call it a remake because it isn't. It's a follow on show like Going Straight was for Porridge, all be it those two had different settings
Yes it was Stehanie Cole in the clip shown who played the Widow Mrs Featherstone.Kathy Staff played Mrs Blewitt.
And run further with 6 seasons.
Yes, and Stefanie Cole had a roll as the doctors aunt in the doc Martin series, which is excellent by the way, if you haven’t seen it
Really enjoyed it, as well as open all hour's again.
Great cast that came from great shows and led to other great shows.
No mention of Ronnie Barker in "The Plank"?
The legend Sir David Jason is thankfully still with us. Yes he is still remaining, but sad you put him under the title of those that died

There are 4 great British comedy actors, Barker , Jason , Atkinson and Cleese …. And many more excellent actors just behind these 4 …. To have 2 in the same show is what made it unmissable telly
Yes, I'm a big fan of the show. Even have DVDs.😂😂
Old ones can not be replaced
Happy memories of all these British actors and those loved comedies.
So true! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
I've enjoyed and fortunately I can still enjoy Open All Hours, in reruns. It hasn't gotten old. I still watch every night before going to bed. These characters are warm and fuzzy and I can't get enough. Please DON'T remake them. It's always a disaster doing that. Leave well enough ALONE. They cannot be copied. 😊😊😊❤❤
I'm a big fan of this show but I think Only fools and horses is the greatest British sitcom ever.

Could not agree more. 👍
@@FactsVerseUK Well in my opinion, the best episode is "Fig biscuits and inspirational toilet rolls" but some people might disagree. I've watched it several times lol.
You mixed Kathy staffs image with another actress
They put Stephanie Cole in, who was Mrs Featherstone. And Mavis was married in the original series
Lynda Baron was my childhood with Come Outside with Pippin the dog. I was so shocked when she died. I don't remember her being in Bob the Builder or Dennis And Gnasher though.

Ronnie Barker started out in The Navy Lark

Just one little problem, all the time you are talking about Kathy Staff you are showing the great Stephanie Cole who played Mrs Featherstone.
The cast of open all hours will never be forgotten, They leave us with 4 seasons and 26 episodes full of laughs,,, Ronnie Barker wasn't just a great actor,He was a great script writer,, alcright stuttering makes me laugh every time,,,

You missed something out..yes, its not P/C to say this...in the original script arkwright never had a stammer..it was ronnie who came up with that Idea..
I saw on a documentary that Ronnie Barker when it came to having the stammer he wanted to portray it correctly and respect people who actually had it.

It’s not on BritBox now it was taken off ages ago there are full episodes on UA-cam tho
The first two seasons at least are on UA-cam.
He looked older than what he was in open all hours. I don't know if they made him up to look older. I just recently discovered open all hours a month and a half ago. I tend to like older British sitcoms I wish I could find more British sitcoms as good.
I absolutely love this show, the best I have ever seen. I live in South Africa and originally from the Netherlands. It started all with PG Wodehouse. ..Jeeves and Bertie. I read all the books and was delighted to find the series. Then I was really ill and Open all Hours just popped up.
These are such talented actors I laughed till I cried. Neatless to say, it helped me to recover. I am hooked on British Humor, there is nothing that even come close.
Thank you for sharing and please if you can suggest similar sitcoms.
Hold on Linda barron did a kids TV show with pippin the dog ,you can't miss that out.
Us maxis wasn't Granville gf in open all hours as she was married in that .she was his girlfriend in Still open all hours
Whe actress in black wasn't Kathy but Stefanie cole
I don't remember 'All creatures LARGE and small! Very American. And I've never heard of the 'titular' Role that David Jason played. I think that probably means something different in America!
Titular role means the title character. In this case, the programme being called "A Touch of Frost", David Jason played Frost so yes, it would be the titular role.
All Creatures Great and Small.
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?

Lynda also in a esipode of dinnerladyd
I remember lynda byron from auntie mabale
Mistakes in this video: The actress who played Mrs Featherstone is not the actress who played the gossipy neighbour you mixed the two up. When it says All Creatures Great And Small on the screen he says all creatures large and small.
You kept showing the Black Widow, NOT Mrs Blewit. Wrong character!!
Lynda Baron was also excellent as Captain Wrack, in the 1983 Doctor Who story 'Enlightenment'.
I completely agree! Lynda Baron's portrayal of Captain Wrack in the 1983 Doctor Who story 'Enlightenment' was fantastic. She brought a sense of power, cunning, and charisma to the character that made her a memorable and formidable foe for the Doctor and his companions. Lynda Baron is a talented actress who has had a long and successful career in film and television, and her performance in 'Enlightenment' is a testament to her skills as an actor. Thank you for bringing up this great role and for sharing your appreciation for Lynda Baron's work!
@FactsVerseUK My pleasure! I believe she also had a supporting role in the Hammer horror film 'Hands of the Ripper' - I'm sure she was in that too. Lynda was also a beauty! Larger ladies like Baron and Hattie Jacques rarely get their beauty commented on and they both were!!

Why are you congratulating these numptys when they have given out so much incorrect information?
Yes I do wish they would bring programmes like All Creatures Great and Small, Some Mother's Do AVE Em and Steptoe.
Your comment doesn't really make sense you say "yes I do wish they would bring programs like" then you list them. Do you mean you want them brought back for continuation or remakes or show repeats? Because Channel 5 has a remake of All Creatures Great And Small.
Lynda also was in minder
Programmes like this were replaced by soaps , more's the pity .
Is that picture of Ronnie as a child correct? Looks NOTHING like him. Barker didn't create Porridge. that was Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
The pics did not match the actors at times.
What happened to stephanie cole aka Mrs Featherstone she was in alot of episodes
Lots of things wrong in this video! Firstly, the picture of Ronnie Barker as a child...I think that's Ronnie Corbett - you got the Two Ronnies mixed up! Secondly, Kathy Staff played Mrs Blewett and Stephanie Cole played Mrs Featherstone aka The Black Widow! Both similar characters but again you have mixed them up when talking about Kathy Staff. Thirdly, All Creatures Great and Small was not All Creatures Large and Small... Please learn to read what it says onscreen and also get your facts straight before making another video. Thanks.
EDIT - Just looked it up... That picture is Ronnie Barker's youngest son Adam who was a convicted paedophile! 😳
All Creatures Great and Small not Large and Small. You also show a picture of Stephanie Cole instead of Kathy Staff. David Jason was also a voice actor in Supermouse
Ronnie Barker starred in Going Straight following on from Porridge
Yes a fan.
Didn't know David Jason passed away ?
You bet... briliant - O A Hrs - and it was done in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
There were tons of great british comedians in the 60' 70' 80' but now its gone...
If this video is about Open All Hours why is the thumbnail from the later Still Open All Hours series? 0:13 - you missed "Hours" from the commentary as you've said "How Each Open All Cast Member Died". Bad editing too as there's a jump cut during the move on the still image at 0:33. Why is there a clip of Stephanie Cole (Mrs Featherstone) here 4:12 when you're talking about Cathy Staff!! More bad editing or just bad research or maybe you're just not familiar with the subject matter that you're making a video about. 5:03 - that's Cathy Staff but all the shots before of the woman in a black coat are all of Stephanie Cole. 5:18 - this is the 2nd video you've made where you call this series All Creatures LARGE and Small - I can't believe you can read out the wrong title when the correct title GREAT and Small is actually there on the screen. 6:47 so you've used clips from the later Still Open All Hours series (2013-2019) here but you never mentioned that this reboot even exists!!!
Ronnire Barker rose to fame playing several roles in the BBC's 'Navy Lark' alongside Leslie Phillips and John Pertwee, amongst others. All Creatures "Large" (!!!!) And Small??? Was Mavis Granville's girlfriend? Not from what i remember. He may have had a crush on her but his light really shone for the milk lady, played by Barbara Flynn. This is what you get when an American narrates a British item - mistakes and lack of knowledge
Yes I love the show

A highly thoroughly comedy with David Jason playing a government operative.
One of the funniest shows way back in the 1970s.
david jason is still going strong. what died?
David Jason featured in Porridge WELL before Open All Hours !
I love watching that comedy falling all in my line of rest and I did not know some of the main ones I did not know we're in the was in now I watch never thought now looking only just a thought why did he talk with a stutter in show then when taking stuff in closing talked normal no stutter wiered
No stutter in the end bit, probably because it was his thoughts rather than him, saying it aloud
He didn't actually have a stutter...that was only for his character.
That's what I thought.
R.Barker advised the stutter, may I say to fantastic effect. 😀
Mavis is beautiful maybe she should of married me what an actress
This video is a complete con job. It does not describe how these stars passed on. It includes two that are still living. It involves a boring and lengthy monologue about their roles that most people know anyway. I won’t be watching anymore of your videos.
Keep the old actors. Leave the shows as is. 😊
David Jason is still alive tho
Yes f sure
NO television show or movie should be remade with an entirely new cast. Hollywood makes this mistake constantly. Remakes don't sit well with fans of the original and often fall short disappointingly. "Still Open All Hours" worked (to a degree) because it featured some original cast members and Granville bore a resemblance to Arkwright. It wouldn't work with an entirely new cast.

It really annoys me the non-committal, prefix use of 'one of..' Only Fools was one of the best ever sit-coms. No it was the best & cannot possibly be equalled.
