- In this video, I am showing how to service the VTX1300 Rear Flange Splines. In the process one can see how to remove the rear tire and at the end see how to replace Rear Brakes Pads and service the flange spines
if you are in need of having to replace the flange bearings, then it is time to do the actual fix. I have done a write up here:

I like the look of that Hydroedge you have on there. I plan on going with one on my 1300 VTX as soon as my rear tire wears out. They have good reviews on the Darkside forum. I'm running a Kuhmo Solus on my 1100 Shadow now and love it, but it's not a symmetrical tread design like that tire, which look better from the rear. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man I did try that even lower the jack I'm soaking it with pb blaster for tonight I'll try again in the morning. I appreciate it man and I'll let you know
Excellent video in plain English thank you very much for taking the time to do this I really appreciate it as i have recently bought a VTX 1300c
You are welcome.

Very helpful video

The Moly 60 (or 77) is only required on the driven flange and ring gear splines. The axle, spacer and the seal lip (on the wheel) are the only areas that are required to be given a light coat of grease.
you are right. i appreciate you sharing this here.
you can apply the same on those areas too.
Yes it is turning freely on both ends, bearing are good no warble or noise. It just won't go out ,I did tapping it with 2×2 with a hammer it just went slide out or move
If the axle is spinning freely, then it is stuck at the bearing....this would be case when youbtakenit off for the first time...whe. you live it put back in, you won't have an issue again.
How did you get a 2x2 there, pipes are in the way? Just give after you hammer the end of the axle where you removed the nut.
Thanks i saw all this vid but have had different responces about molly paste
can you clarify what you are asking about the molly paste?

I need help man ! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Just about to go darkside and was sure there were other things of concern but you covered it very well. At least now I'm aware of what to look for as far as axle wear is concerned. One thing I haven't been able to find is a proper way to balance the tire. Did you have someone install the tire for you or DIY. Thanks, Safe riding.
brkslee1, I had some one else install the tire....check out mcdarksiders.forumotiom.com for all CT related info.
As for balancing...use ceramic beeds that you put through the tire valve, result = continuous balancing that adjust to tire wear...you will never need to get a balance again. If I remember correctly, it's 3oz for the tire....there are charts you can look up. Good luck!
Thank you for this great video
please what it the size of your tire ?
Sorry for the late reply. My tire is 205 70 R15
I have a cobra pipes so its low enough
My question is can you run a matching tire on the front and if so what size and great video
I dont think you can run a car tire on the front. They make directional MC tires. These are tires forward rolling direction arrow on the tire depending on if the tire is installed on the rear or the front of the motorcycle. These tires are thicker than typical front motorcycle tires. I have installed the Avon Roadrunner Tire that is a directional Tire. It has lasted me twice as long as a front motorcycle tire.
footprintsinconc thanks for the info I’m tired of buying new tires every season
Some do what is often referred to as "Double DarkSide. It is the practice of running a car tire on the rear and a rear motorcycle tire on the front of the bike. It is less common for people to actually run a car tire in the front position but it is done by some but those are few and far between.
Good video. Question. I recently replaced my rear tire and removed and installed the brake caliper. There's a part, (#4) on an OEM explosion for the VTX 1300, called a SPRING, PAD 43108-KT7-761
. I don't see it in your video nor do I see it on my pads. Thoughts?
Jeffrey, the pad spring will be mounted onside the cavity and it won't fall out when you change the pads. If it does, just clean it and push it back in...i can't post a picture here will try to post a link
Here is the link to the blow up of caliper...you can the spring sits in the caliper body. That is why you have to push the pad on when inserting the pin that goes through the ends of the pad:

@@footprintsinconc thanks for the reply.
What year
nice i have a vtx1300r i will try one of this tires on my next rear tire what about the front one? can i install a ct there too?
have you noticed any change when you hit a sand, oil or antifreeze spot on the street?
the front tire is a rear mc tire spinning the opposite direction. rear mc tires are generally much thicker and thus last last longer on the front. opposite direction turn is so that it pushes water out as a normal front tire does. the tire i got was a avon venum, which is meant to be installed on the back or the front and it has directional arrows on it depending on if its installed on the front or back.
i dont have any experience on sand, but on gravel, it felt a lot more comfortable...but there are a lot of other videos you will find where people ride on different surfaces with a CT to demonstrate how it rides...you can look those up. good luck with the CT search!
thanks for the info buddy ill tray that avon tire :)
What is the purpose of running the car tire? How does it affect cornering?
it does. there is more patch touching the road when cornering. it does make turning a little more difficult...not much but noticeable...nothing your don't learn to handle after a couple of turns
check out youtube videos of MC with camera while riding ...
check out this site:
mcdarksiders.forumotion.com/
As original molly isn't no longer available what are you using on the splines etc ?
Hi. Thank you for watching, much appreciated.
You can buy any moly out there. You can still google honda moly and get it from partszilla, amazon, its the moly M-77 (US) and Moly 77 (Canada), it replaced M60 moly paste, other brands are loctite, jet-lube, etc...just make sure its molybdenum disulfide MSo2 content is more than 60%.
you can also go to a marine dealer and see what they have. the key is that it stays on the gear.
What do you use to clean the rims on the bike? They look pretty clean!
Thanks. just soap and water. nothing else. i've thought of polishing them but don't have the energy :)
@@footprintsinconc Thank you, I actually tried doing that yesterday didn't have much luck seems like the dust and stuff has been sitting there for a while. Do you know what the rims are actually made of?
@@zkdwuhbj out of aluminum alloy. they are pretty solf.
you might as well polish them for the 1st time if they are not getting clean/or due to oxidation and then keep them polilshed :) i was lucky to have clean rims when i bought the bike and have kept them clean since.
check out vtxcafe.com or vtxoa.com both sites have tons of information.
Working on this with an adjustable wrench??? How savage. Seriously.
The torque is really low. So it doesn't matter.
You can probably buy the correct wrench for 15 bucks or less, but, hey, it's your motorcycle. Knock yourself out.@@footprintsinconc
You can definitely do that too.
Does the car tire affect cornering? I ride a VTX1300 as well and up for tire replacement soon.
PDB Long, it doesn't really make that big of a difference. I rarely used to scrape my foot boards...now I end up doing it more often...something that a lot of people have noticed. initially, like anything new, you will have a very short adjustment period, nothing to be worried about. the ride will feel noticeably smoother from day one...and this will be the last rear tire change that you will do in almost forever....you'll be extremely happy.
there are a tone of videos of people who have mounted a camera facing the rear tire on different bikes and they ride on different surfaces and curves to show you that the car tire tremendous capability to adjust to any surface (gravel, grass, pavement, etc.) and the massive contact surface even on turns that you have...I looked around alot and couldn't decide at first because it's one person's experience vs another....but when I saw a video on UA-cam of a goldwing with a CT taking curves and on different surfaces, I was sold!
fyi....CT are softer than MC tires...again, info available on Web
here is a forum that will give you much info on the car tire use on the back:
mcdarksiders.forumotion.com/
I ride a vtx, and was in the tire business for about 10 years. I see the appeal of the car tire, because you'll get alot more miles. But I'd strongly recommend you stick with a motorcycle tire. They are built very differently on the inside. That's why you don't ever see blow out and belt separations (unless you purposely burn the tire till it pops) on motorcycle tire. On car tires it's pretty common.
If you have a tire pop on a car you'll have to pull over. If your motorcycle pops you might be eating the street.
Also one of the ways a tire get traction is by how fast it's wearing out. Motorcycle tires should have a lot of traction and they'll wear quicker.
For example super high performance car tires normally don't have a milage warranty, or have a real small one.
Darkside! Won't say it's for everybody, but will say that I'll never go back to an motorcycle tire...ever...regardless of how many "professionals" say it's a bad idea. 100's of thousands of miles in our groups. Overwhelming success and satisfaction rates.
@@pcpc5503 . How many cars tires I you actually seen fail while on a motorcycle? How many motorcycle tires have you actually seen fail on a motorcycle? I keep hearing similar claims by "Tire experts" but I have never actually heard of anyone having a car tire blow out or come off the wheel (rim) like all the experts keep claiming they will. Over 50,000 miles DarkSide now on my VTX 1300. ZERO problems. I am never going back to a motorcycle tire on the rear of my VTX. ;-)
I have a few questions about runing a car tire. If I am using a 180/70R 16 m/c 77H. What size of car tire would match up to that size? And will it fit it between the shaft hub and swingarm?
I see that you have a set of Cobra Boulevard Slashcut Slip On Mufflers on your Honda VTX 1300 Retro. What year is your motorcycle?
this is an 07
Whats the wheel PCD, center hole size, and measure bolt hole size for the front wheel?
i'm not sure on the size. the manual doesn't say anything about it.
@@footprintsinconc thanks
Hi I'm trying to remove the rear tire on my VTX 2006 1300,so I can replace the tire but the shaft it won't slide out like on your video any suggestions would be appreciated thank you I'm stuck here man.
one you remove the nut on the end of the axle, is the axle turning freely when you use the allen key?
if it is, then you just need to be able to push on it from the right side...you can get a skinny screw driver, put it through the upper and lower pipe gap and hammer on it, while having someone else turn the axle with an allen key. this will help break it loose and push out. also, support the rear tire ever so slightly once the axle breaks loose from the right support so that the rim doesn't end up binding or keeping you from pulling out the axle. Let me know how it goes.
What size car tire did you use?
205 70 R15
@@footprintsinconc is the speedometer correct
@@terrytaylor424 the speedo is off by 10% anyways.
with the car tire, i'm about the same height of the stock tire, so no change there....maybe a +/- 1mph. it's been 14 years since i installed this.
I have a 180 70 15 on my VTX What size car tire would I put on it
On a VTX, you can put a 205 70R15 without mods. However, you can go upto 225 70R15. For this, you have to hammer the inside of the drive shaft (no damage or adverse issue with this) housing to make room for the xtra width on tire, which is easy to do if you are interested (google this if interested). Hope this helps.
Your car tire what is the size and do it ride better ?
Car tire is a 205 70 r 15
It rides softer than mc tire.
Skids straight when lock rear tire
Lasts much much longer
And half the MC price
It reads ground cracks more, just notice it first few days and you won't notice it much after that.
You need to counter steer a bit more in corners...again something you won't notice after a few days
Check out some UA-cam videos of bikes running with a car tire and see for your self.
There is this guy out of Canada who shows how a mc tire and car tire fit a mc rim...somethings to be aware of.
what size car tire are you using? thxs
205 70R15
Great video! watch those toes. Just a FYI so that everyone knows Honda Moly 60 is discontinued. M-77 is replacement, and I dont believe its above 40%. Honda dealer doesn't even use it. This link is $25 Canadian.

PS make note of stainless steel brake clip on bracket, it can fall off if your not watching for it.
Again great video.

Have you ever had a problem with break locking up but it will unlock when you ride ? My email.
Never had an issue. So you are saying when you let go if the brake, the brake stays on? Only unlocks when you move the bike forward or backwards?
