  • The eigth Developer log of the hobby project action-platformer currently titled: Candlehead.
    In this episode I've added slow motion and lag compensation, added attacks and a cat that you can pet!

      Thank you! Yeah I strive to make it fun to just run around! 🙂 Kind of like how you can spend hours just running around in the Mario64 Hub 😄

      Thank you! Yeah for now the plan is for shoes and entire outfits so pants hoodie and jacket would all change together 🙂

    The pet rock should be hidden somewhere in every level and it's just that specific rock that you can pet, and maybe something happens when you pet it in every level.

    Really really gorgeous work as always.
    In the previous Devlog you've asked if any other game features Parkour the way you've implemented, there is one game that I though of, Vector. It's a 2D mobile, infinite runner kind of game that features parkour and sexy smooth animations. You should check it out!

      @@timothymakesgames Thanks! I posted a video showing the collectible shoes incorporated into the game on my Twitter and I'll show it in the next devlog 🙂
      He is a candle because it creates a simple and readable character palette and I thought it was a fun concept 🙂

    I like the look of the game a lot. the animations are so spot on in my opinion.. Is it unity you're using? or godot?

      @@JustFredrik cool :) do you have a general sense of what the gameplay is going to focus on? Looks like you're going for a parkour style movement, but is it supposed to be fast phased throughout with fast combat? Or are you gonna mix in physics and puzzle elements as well? Maybe you're just going with the flow and see what happens? :)

      @ I have a general sense of where I want things to go 🙂 I want to mix it up but allow players to be fast. Main inspirations rn are Sekiro, Mirrors Edge, Celeste and Zelda. But I will let the game speak for itself and listen if I feel like changing directions would be better for the game 🙂

      I think it would be cool if you could implement the fact that he has a candle for a head in the gameplay in some way.. Either have it light up to indicate a power up is active, or use it to indicate the start of a timed trial (like jumping through a burning ring or something) that you have to finish before your head melts, or something. I think that would give the character an extra layer of depth and be an interesting mechanic.

    Since you've already responded to me a few times, I feel spoiled, so don't feel obligated to respond, but I will say that while I like seeing a bit of personality and such in these videos, I'm actually far more interested in just seeing the game upgrades and such. Maybe a little bit of "how I figured out how to get this to work" stuff, but all preambling and such isn't nearly as interesting. I'd recommend either eliminating it, or limiting it to no more than 5% to 10% of an episode.
    Edit: Oh, another thing: I've noticed that candlehead himself looks a little. . . chubby, particularly in his running animation. I feel like he'd look better if he were slimmed down a bit. Then again, you might be going for a rotund/cylindrical look, so this criticism might be irrelevant.

      I'm trying to get a bit more horizontal coverage for the character, just having a slim vertical line. Trying to to make it readable! 🙂
      The jacket is pretty puffy and flops around a bit during the run! 🙂
      I'll take the feedback into concideration and think about it if/when I revise the animation 🙂

    how did you animated those plants? is it just sprite animation ? look Cool :{

      The sprites are drawn on a quad and I use a buildt in function to move the courners of the quad based on some wind values and external forces applied to the plant! So they are animated with code! :) (will later change it to a shader because it doesn't interpolate the texture so it gets some weird stretching across the two triangles that make up the quad)

      I used to have an idle animation but then I updated the idle pose and haven't gotten around to making a new one. I've prioretized getting more essential things into the game. I'll evntually get there but it's just for looks so it's not a high prio right now
