Just did my rear brakes on my 14 JGC, The tip with the wrench on the 7mm hex was a lifesaver. Thank you Sir!
I'm really feeling those spot lights you have in the wheel well.
Makes it easier to see what you working on.
Doing rear brakes on my wife's jeep this weekend. THANK YOU for sharing!
Terrific video as always. Detailed and concise . A true professional
That's the first time I saw an "O" ring on the center of the hub. I'm glad the screw driving came in handy. :) As always, you produced a very well explained video. Anyone could do this job after viewing your video.
You did a perfect professional job on that Jeep like you always do when repairing the ones you have in the shop. I hope the machanic's here work like that and that is why I do as much work as I can on my own vehicles, and to save money.
Best brake video I've ever watched. Now, I'm ready to do the job without wasting a lot of time.
I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching
@@jimthecarguy Thanks for the reply! One other thing that would help on this video is a section on what to do if rust on the inside of the rotor causes it to catch on the parking brake shoes. Your rotors came right off but mine were a struggle. Part of the answer is to loosen the star adjuster on the brake shoes. But that's another struggle. On this vehicle, it's in an awkward place and there doesn't seem to be enough clearance for the ordinary tools to turn it. (Some engineer's cruel joke on auto mechanics?) I had to make my own shortened L-shaped tool and then use a mirror to see what I was doing. And, even then, one rotor was so rusted I wound up destroying the shoes and springs trying to get it off. It would be great to see what the pros do when the job doesn't go smoothly.
Nice work Jim!!! Love the attention to detail 😉👍
This is a great video! I will use it when do all four of my wheels next month.
Did my Rear brakes today on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and referred back to this video a couple of times. Thanks for the help.
This is a free precise video great info and tip about saving the knuckles.
That bottom caliper bolt had me stumped! You really saved me with that wrench trick! You’re the MAN!
Great job Jim, the details make all the difference.
So helpful and love the polite attitude
Excellent job Jim!
Outstanding video, Jim! Thank you very much for sharing your expertise in such an easy to follow manner!
Thank you for watching and your input.
Thanks Jim. The ratchet with the 7 mm allen bit was a great tip! I appreciate your channels.
Great detail Sir! You are a true instructor!
Great Video Jim, very thorough. I like the tips on needed tools and sizes of wrenches. My rotor was stuck on so I appreciated the tip on how to break loose with hammer. One request is to address how to inspect and adjust the park break.
This was my first brake job on our jeep grand cherokee and was unsure about the noise retaining clips you were very concise and explanitory in your video it was a big help ti me finished opposite side in 20 minutes after watching this thanks jim!!
Glad it helped!
First class job Jim!! Bravo brother!!!!!
Great video, Jim - Thanks for getting me ready to tackle the job on my truck!!
I'm happy to help. Thank you for watching.
Excellent video sir, thank you. I actually have a 2013 Grand Cherokee Overland. I'm hoping it is the same set up. I will be doing this brake job… thanks again.
Great video Jim,thanks a million
Jim, A very well illustrated & detail vid, much appreciated as i will be doing my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Jan/2019 Thanks..
Leo ... Are the front brakes just like the Rear?
Thanks for the video, very informative!
Very informative. Now I know what happened to my JGC and what work went into a rear brake job. Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
Awesome video! Thanks! It's been years since I've done brakes myself and this looks very straightforward. Appreciate the attention to detail. I have a '21 Overland and the rear rotors are already rusted/scored after only 32K miles...
Depending on how your drive, 32k miles seems like a lot for brakes
great detailed video thanks so much for the trick putting wrench on 7mm hex that was a fantastic idea,
Best video! That was a really informative, especially the part where you explained how to take out the bottom bolt.
Beautiful Presentation. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for the tip on removing the caliper 7mm bolts...
Great video thanks for your help you saved me a lot of pain
Thank you for watching.
Excellent detailed video on rotors. Only issue I had is the caliper hex bolt. Depending on the vehicle it can be a 10mm hex or 11mm hex. The Jeep you had didn't have vented rotors needing Only a small 7mm.
The front on this keep is 11mm the rear is 7mm
Thanks for the share...did the fronts awhile back (and discovered that stupid o-ring the hard way after about 15 minutes of wondering why the damn rotor wouldn't come off...lol!)...just checked in to see if there was anything weird about the rears.
Thank you for this video, top notch, great explanation. perfect amount of detail. 👌👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tip on removing the rear rotors by giving it a few hits to loosen it up.I was struggling on my 2014 jeep grand cherokee to remove mine, then I saw your video and it helped 😅
Glad it helped
Excellent video.
You make it look so easy
Love your videos sir thank you for the help
I'm happy to help. Watch for the next free tool giveaway coming soon.
Grat job ! The Best rottors and pads change video I ever seen !
Glad you liked it!
Nice tip using the wrench on the allen socket.
Another excellent vid Jim! Good details and instruction, even I would attempt this job if I owned a Jeep. ;)
Ozzstar don't get your hose twisted Glen 😎
Fantastic Instructional video! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
good video. well done!
6:50 brilliant!! thanks!!
great job
Sir you are awesome 👌, now I feel scared but confident that I can do myself, cause I'm flat broke, can't afford dealer work. Thank you very much.
I plan on changing all 4 rotors and pads on my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee do I hit the brake pedal after each one is done or can I wait until all 4 are done? Thanks in advance for any info, your video is very detailed and informative.
Very helpful 👌
Thank you sir
Great video Jim! What are the torque specs on the caliper slide pins and bracket bolts for a 2015 Grand Cherokee Altitude (Laredo)?
Thanks for the expert advice!!!!
Reminds me of the mechanic that taught me when I first started out working on vehicles... No stress in his voice....
Thank you.
Would have never known 0 ring was there. 50 yr old eyes here. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you, 👍
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
What are the torque specs for the bolts on the rear and front breaks
Saved me!
Hi Jim, what is the purpose of the o-ring on the rotor? Does it do anything? Thanks Friend
My 2014 jeep GC Summit needs new pads & rotors do you think its necessary to get OEM or i can go aftermarket and save a few bucks? i see a power stop brake kit online for $350 vs OEM which my dealer wants $500+ for
In all the brakes jobs I’ve done I’ve never used a compressor on calipers or pry bar I remove the cover off brake reservoir and use my hands to compress caliper on vehicle before removal just use hands to squeeze calipers.. try it works
Good video. I have one question. I have a 2017 jeep grand Cherokee limited and i do not see a brake service mode in the settings. am i missing something?
I’m having trouble getting the rotor off. I’ve got it loose but it’s almost like the parking brake is engaged. My guess is just that the tolerance is super tight so it’s fighting me. I double checked to make sure it’s not engaged. Is there a trick to loosening it while the rotor is still on?
I’m getting a running noise from the rear brakes after replacing the pads and rotors. Took it apart again to see if anything was rubbing but not able to see anything noticeable. Have you ran into this before the the Jeep GC?
My new rotors didn't go on that easy. I actually had to force them on. Could there be something wrong with my e brake?
what pads and rotors do you recommend?
Thank you! That was very helpful. Especially the bit about beating the crap out of the disk until it pops off. First time I didn't use a big enough hammer! Do you find that there's slightly less clearance with the air suspension? I couldn't get my 7mm Allen 'socket' and 3/8" drive in behind the bottom pin. I am glad you mentioned the 'O' ring too.
@Patty Homes Undid the caliper bracket bolt, hinged it out to get the 7mm in, then rotated it back and threaded in the bolt until I cracked the pin loose. Once it is loose you can unscrew it with your fingers.
Glad it helped!
Excellent video and well done. Would this procedure be the same for a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee? Thank You
Yes it will. Thanks for watching.
Great video!!! I just replace my rear pads and I notice that the outer pad is worn out more than the inner pad, what could cause that to happen? Thanks in advance!
Jose Rodriguez You want to check the slide pins and make sure there is no rust where the pads touch
i opened up my knuckle when i had no room taking the lower motor mount bolt off on my nissan 3 yrs ago, it split open 😂😂😂 wish i had seen this back then
2016 rear break caliper piston do u have to turn and push the piston to get it back in or push push with a c clamp
They should just push in. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
Jim, Before doing my rear rotor and pad on my 2016 GC, my e brake was tight and effective. Now that I have replaced my brakes it is weak and doesn't hold nearly as well. Is there a way to adjust this without taking the caliber and rotor back off?
I'm happy to help.
Jim - Thanks for the great video. I'm already a fan. Question...do you have to separately remove the caliper and then the bracket? Could you just remove the bracket, knowing that the caliper comes off with it? Thanks
I do a live stream Sunday night on jimthecarguy at 7:00 PM (EST).I will talk about this .Let me know in the chat section when your there.
Hi Jim. I will actually be doing the rears on my wife's 2014 GC this upcoming weekend. Really appreciate the thoughtful detail in the video and your editing style. I am certainly subscribing to your channel. I have the same question as Barry up above and am curious if you have a link to the video that you discussed it in, and maybe a timestamp.
Sooo what’s the answer? Lol I plan on doing my jeeps brakes and rotors this weekend and I have no idea why you couldn’t just take out the whole bracket and caliper?
@@tylerblazo Tyler - I ended up just removing the bracket with caliper and had no issues. Once you get into doing it, you'll see what you need to do. Good luck
Great video with great narration and good clear video shots. I definitely appreciate the tip about using the wrench on the hex socket! I have the HD brakes and there's no way the 1/2 drive socket and 11mm hex would fit in there
Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
Jim, do you have a video for the front?
Front is much the same except you need an 11 mm hex socket which you will have to order from Napa because NO ONE has an 11 mm hex socket in stock!
I just did my 2014 Jeep GC brakes I just removed the two 18 MM bolts and left the slider bolts in. any reason to take them all off?
Thanks for watching.
Jim, There was no mention of the e/brake, i presume the e/brake was deactivated by scrolling down the radio/illustration panel screen on the dash, my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited Sport 3.2 V6 you would scroll down on the screen to were it says ( service brakes ) it ask - push to service brakes - on or off..i presume that process would be needed to do to retract the rear e/brakes to service mode, would that be correct Jim.. Off coarse there is the e/brake toggle switch on the counsel, that should be in the off position as well.. Thanks Jim..
Hey Leo. The Grand Cherokee (WK2) doesn't have an electronic e-brake. It has a manual foot pedal/cable driven system.
@@MariosGarage283 -- Thank You kindly, Vid's are very well done & appreciated..
“do not ratchet with a closed hand or you’ll rip up your knuckles”
*proceeds to ratchet with a closed fist* 😂
hahah just playing, great video! thanks!
Hi Jim again, I have a 2017 jeep grand cherokee. Would it be the same procedure on my jeep as this one you did ? Thanks Friend
Yes it will
@@jimthecarguy Thank You Jim.
think i saw this guy on the sopranos once
Jim ... Are the front brakes the same way too?
Yes it will be almost the same.Thank you for watching
Surprised no parking brake adjustment while you're there
Hi I just installed the rotors an my 2013 GC but for some reason the pads in the rear don’t fully touch the rotors. Any body know why? Thanks
Did you clean the rust off the mounting bracket before you installed the new pads?
Yes I,do. The inner pad does not seem to make full contact. the outer side is making full contact. I have been driving the car for 3 days and it does not look like the inner pad makes contact with the rotor.
I'm dying to know.. how long did it actually take you to break the 18mm bolts loose.. just changed the factory pads an a 2015 myself - I has to use a breaker bar. No way you took those off with a 12 inch socket wrench lol. But makes for a good video!
Actually they did come off using the 12 inch ratchet. Possibly yours were rusted. Thanks for watching
I would loosen the bleeder to make sure it's not seized
Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
Jim, would a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited Sport 3.2 V6 have the same process as the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee done here !! Please Advise Thank You..
Jimmy are you from New York or Jersey?
New Jersey. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
You can use this (also known as not described piece)!!!!!!!!
Do you have the torque specs for all the bolts
TORQUE VALUES: FRONT 144 (bracket) 41 (caliper) ft lbs. REAR: 89, 20 ft lbs. Youre welcome.
144 lbs on front bracket? Holy balls
Please make sure the master cylinder is not full before pressing the piston back in. If someone filled it at a servicing (or something) you'll have a mess. If it's full, suck some out.
Jim it’s 2014 it already needs brake wow.
john1240able I have to put front brake pads on my dodge every 2 years. My rotors and calipers are original though. I did a complete job in the back because I let it go to long.
It's a good video, but you gloss over the torque specs. They are very important, and I think someone without experience will under torque the bracket and over torque the caliper. If I looked it up correctly, the bracket is 89 ft-lbs and the caliper is 20 ft-lbs (although another source I saw says 32 - this needs to be verified). Also, these might be torque-to-yield bolts; they shouldn't be re-used if they are
Great point!
144/40 for the front FYI
7mm hex is probably the stupidest thing ever done by Dodge! The problem is you can only break it loose then do the rest by hand.
Jeez, hit the rotor lightly around the edge to brake it free. No way would i smash it like that...
Thanks for watching.
Why bother removing the calipers, just remove the brackets with the calipers still attached, you can do the entire job in 10 minutes with an 18mm and a hammer.
No that will not work . You need to replace the hardware and lube the slide pins and hardware
