Devin is not only an amazing singer and composer, he is a masterful sound engineer. He produced most of not all his own and the Strapping records himself.
And hoo boy, do you have a rabbit hole to go down or what. Enjoy your Devy journey, it is so damn rewarding. There truly is something in his catalogue for everyone. A real musical chameleon.
The Journey just began. I liked that you mentioned the layering. I do not know much about this recording, but Devin not only has a great voice and is a great guitar player, and a great composer, he also mixes his sounds on a very unique way, like a sound-artist :) If you wonder who the great drummer was: It is Gene Hoglan, the legend. 🤩

YES MAN! Strapping Young Lad have been in my top 3 bands (Next to Primus and Opeth) for the past 17 years. Check them out performing Aftermath live at Download 06 it's..... intense. Their last live performance as Devin ended the project that day. Also he was sick but pushed through
2 things: Drummer is Gene Hoglan, they call him "The Atomic Clock" and he's played for like 20 bands; any time they need heavy but perfection. 2nd, this was the final single before Devin broke up Strapping Young Lad and I had to wait 10 years to see him play it live.
Best nickname ever. Most younger fans don't understand this nickname tho as the Atomic Clock was America's doomsday clock during the Cold War. Implying brother could end the world with his ability to keep time LMFAO 🤦🤘 Legendary. I still break out his drum teaching DVD every few months and redo his rudiments.
@@jdmmike7225 Atomic Clock’s name has got nothing to do with the Doomsday Clock which indicates how close the world is to nuclear annihilation.
It refers to the clock that holds perfect time due to the measurement of caesium decay hence he has unaltering perfect timing.

Being at the live concert almost 20 years ago and hearing these songs from this album...
I stopped to stand still in the middle of over 200 square meters (more than 600 hundred square feets in weird measurements) moshpit, a beautiful woman jumped up and down just in front of me, almost grinding herself against me, but neither of us focused on that at the moment.
She let the beat flow through her and I just had to stop to appreciate the stage and the turbulent sea of oh-so-many people jumping up and down all around me.
And the drummer were the rock at that sea. Sitting still like stoic patriarch, only his boots and hands flowing in air, orchestrating the time we all passed through..
..yeah.. That happened, like 17 years ago and STILL I feel the moment.

I love this song so much, it just sounds robotic at first, then you realize ppl are playing and singing at the same time. It’s just amazing and the song is good too. For me it’s one of those woh wow songs.

You wanna hear experimental check out "Antiproduct" from the same album. This tune is the middle part of a trio, the last 3 tunes on the album, that's why it starts right away, because the tune before leads into it 🤘 Great reaction dude.
Surprisingly it's a totally analog effect. This song was produced using the "wall of sound" technique (look it up). Basically the guitar and other instruments are routed to an amp inside of a special small room with a microphone that picks up this incredible recording
that's actually how most analog recording goes for guitars! cuz you can also do what dev does now, direct in with the axefx.
but the 'wall' comes from the mixing/arranging, after the instruments are all recorded. all about how they layer it in pro tools or whatever daw they used
This track is kinda the beginning of a new chapter in Devin’s musical path.
So cool to see you continue the Devin rabbit hole, especially hearing at the start of the other one you're new to listening to progressive metal. Welcome to what is probably the greatest genre of music, it can be any and all genres at the same time!

Dude, you’re in for a treat. Devin has 35 years worth of music. Including b sides and UA-cam releases (covid concerts) he averages about an album every 10 months. That amount of music. For the last 35 years. He states that he cannot stop creating, as that is how we processes life. And life doesn’t stop 😂.
He has synesthesia, and equates different emotions to different colors. And each of his albums represents a color/emotion/mindset/ when he wrote the material.
He writes music on the path to enlightenment.
