Am an interested hass avocado farmer have already done some trees which are 2years now all my seedlings were from jkuat i must say that they have genuine product but my concern that makes me want to buy my next seedlings elsewhere is that they sell very young trees making it so hard for them to survive upon pplanting in the field and as a result i lost quite a number,some i lost due lack of planting knowledge by planting them too deep in a hole in a region where we get high rainfall and majority died due to root rot......happy that you enlightened the farmers on doing raised ground planting. Now to my quiz between kakuzi and soloplant where will i get the best seedlings which are old enough ,good quality and high chances of tree survival once planted your recommendation will be highly appreciated. This is very eye opening. But perhaps you could tell the suppliers about the demise of your seedlings just to give them the benefit of the doubt... maybe they are not aware of the effect of their hard "oven baked" soil?
I think you should have used a sandy soil/decomposed granite for the roots to breathe, but the way I look at them they are not yet dead , they can be revived.
The one thing you can do is to remove all that soil before planting. I did that and replanted them and now they are OK. You will however need to irrigate them on a daily basis.
I think you have to soak it I water with some hydrogen peroxide for some hours, then melt the sand to remain only the roots then plant it with some mixed manure.
This soil argument has been advanced but I have my doubts. Roots are so aggressive that they can penetrate any media. The soil could be having the characteristics but I see lack of water as a factor. My opinion!
The problem is lack of oxygen. Avocados need 6-8 ppm of oxygen. A lot more than most other fruit tree types. When the drought came, the clay hardened, and then the roots lost their oxygen and died. You need to plant on a sandy loam soil with your raised mound, you need to mulch the ground to keep it moist. Clay is much better if you mulch it, because the fungi in the soil along with all the soil organism will keep it permeable. Nothing wrong with clay soil, but the immediate soil for the root ball should always be a raised mound and not clay. And again! mulch so that the clay never dries out, and the break down of the mulch and the increased soil organism due to the mulch will allow the clay to be permeable for the tree to use. Also you don't have any compost. Clay ground, with sandy loam soil as a mound on top of the clay. Place compost on top of the sandy loam soil raised mound. Place mulch on top of the compost. mulch above compost, compost above sandy loam raised mound, sandy loam raised mound above clay ground
@@johnjester254 Shouldn't be a problem. Follow the same instructions of sandy loam soil near the root mass. The compost and the mulch will improve all soil types over time, making them more permeable, and giving it better drainage.

Hey , I planted some hass seedlings last month and something is piercing the leaves. What should i do. Also, when should I top dress or use foliar?

I think it's more of lack of enough water than the soil type. Avocado trees need a lot of water.

Agree. Lack of adequate watering appears to have contributed to loss of seedlings.
