Definitely not in a living or financial situation for a tegu any time soon, but one day, haha. Fell in love with these guys the second I learned about them.
glad this vid came out, didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know but I can show it to my husband as my son's iguana recently passed about the time we were starting to bond with it due to a freak reaction to an injection at the vet's office (it was 4 or 5 months old and a little blue, I was unaware they were prone to health issues more then the greens and reds). Either way we were thinking on getting him a tegu.. mostly because they are one of my dream reptiles and I am in several tegu groups where I can get in contact with great breeders.. and that I think a ground lizard that can imprint on it's keepers is a bit easier then praying we end up with a second tame iguana .. granted my methods and progress with my red has been amazing and my kids love her... but I've also had a super mean green as well too :P I'd rather try to prep my son for success this time.. with help of course.
honestly i think you're a very responsible parent. While the death of your iguana is very tragic I agree that if your intending it to be for your child a tegu would be a better option just because it's easier to get a naturally calm one that has slightly easier care requirements. Tegus also have a pretty similar diet to people so it's also a good way to teach your kid on how to be cost effective on buying groceries where you can meal plan around your pets diet to cut down on food costs ( of course this mostly works out for me because I don't have a family to feed as well.) and I will say that ever since I got a tegu I started eating healthier because I didn't see the point on going out to buy food when I still had to go home and prepare my pets meal. So I would look for recipes that had similar ingredients that I was feeding the guy. So if i was going to feed my tegu salmon grapes and spinach, I'd just look for a salmon recipe and have a spinach salad with grapes for dessert. Best of luck for your family!
I plan on getting a Tegu, and I am not really sure.. Is a 170 centimetres (in length) enough for an enclosure to a fully grown Tegu? Or should it be larger?
I'm not exactly sure how it happened but my tegu sorta potty trained herself. Not sure what I did but she seems to only pop inside her enclosure. Even when she roams freely around the house, if she needs to go, she will go back to her enclosure and poop in there.
I can see that. Mine will always go in a certain corner of his enclosure. He does not wait to go potty though when outside the enclosure. He likes to watch me mop up his mess haha
They can be mean if not handled properly when they're young. They also carry bacteria so you must be careful to avoid their saliva. If fed live creatures and a TON of meat they can get pretty aggressive. I've worked with them my whole life. Don't feed them live animals if you can avoid it. Also, clip their nails and harness train them when they're YOUNG. Handle them and show them lots of love and affection. Cuddle them and sing to them. Xoxoxo they do get HUGE so be prepared.
Hola!
Really good video :) will sahre on tegu uk page :) My boy Zonda has a bit of stubbon tail shed, i been lifting the shed slighty and spraying water right underneither and seems to b doing the trick, but i have noticed as he got older his skin is thicker. It cant b humidity issue as he passes plently of water when poo'in :p
I have a glass terrarium. I want to let my lizard Tegu go around my apartment. I have an idea to lean his terrarium so that an entrance will be on the side and Tegu could leave his home for a walk around my room. Question: Will my UVB, UVA Exo Terra Solar-Glo lamp give a full specter of light through glass?
How big is this glass terrarium? Any one I know of would be way to small for a Tegu. Anyway, be careful free roaming. They require a very high humidity level. Unless your in FL (or somewhere tropical outside the US), that will be hard to do in a apartment. I would let him free roam to long. As for a UV going through terrarium glass, it will not.
can i ask a question? i have never seen a ful grown columbian tegu that has the big fat cheeks or fat neck muscles what ever they are like the argentine adults all have those big cubby neck pockets. why is that? that is only an argentine tegu thing?
You literally almost gave me a heart attack saying they might be illegal in Massachusetts, been planning getting one for months and never thought it would be an issue but they are legal in mass

They can be difficult to keep outside of FL but they are such a social reptile and really can bond with their owner.
Tegu is my dream pet!!! But gotta wait till i have the space for thei adult enclosures!
that is 100% the right attitude.

My girl literally does the exact opposite lol

Really good video :) will sahre on tegu uk page :)

Professor Herp Would I need any UV lighting for a tegu if I live in Florida?
@@fatpigeon7422 yes you need it, only if you not planning to keep him always outside
@@fatpigeon7422 havent they banned them
HannahThe FallenAngel Don’t think so. I believe they are trying to ban iguanas though.
What size gallon tank do you recommend
8'x4'x4' or bigger!

Not sure why. Never looked into that. Good question for a tegu facebook page! Not a Colombian Tegu thing for sure.
You literally almost gave me a heart attack saying they might be illegal in Massachusetts, been planning getting one for months and never thought it would be an issue but they are legal in mass
haha I will be more careful next time! I am sorry about that
@@ProfessorHerp haha no not your fault I should've looked it up. Luckily I'm safe haha
arent you worried about him pooping on the carpet
Yes, but it happens and I deal with it haha
@@ProfessorHerp worried about their unpredictable bite. What is the chance of an aggressive bite?
@@christopheralonge7758 small. Depends on their personality really. As a species, they tend to be pretty relaxed in captivity.

Massachusetts allow tegus🌚
