Replacing Travel Trailer RV Storage Hatch Screw Cover Trim

  • The trim that covers the screws for the storage hatch on our Keystone Travel Trailer / Camper kept coming out of the track even though I kept tucking it back in over and over again. Finally I decided to try and replace the trim. After a lot of searching I realized the trim was not preformed in a rectangle but just straight trim that came in a spool and was stretched around the corners.

Thanks for the video! I'm having the same issue.....trim popping out at the corners.....and I thought it was a pre-made trim also! Good to know just a simple roll of trim will be an easy fix!

There has to be a better way. I am sure the guys on the assembly line don't spend this much time on every one of these trims. Maybe a tool that you slide around that lays it in? You did it fairly fast, but I had previously tried this and spent more time than you did and gave up and pulled it off as I could not get the corners to stay. It seems yours is much more pliable than the stuff I bought.

Yeah, I think after a little bit of practice it becomes second nature, and also jamming extra in there as you go so that it doesn't pull out of the corners when it gets cold out.

How’d you know what width to buy? I don’t want to take the old off before I have a good replacement. PS. What brand camper? Looks a little like mine… I have a Keystone Hideout

I ended up taking out some and measuring and I ordered the closest one and compared it to the groove size. I agree, it is a bit confusing for me too because of the "W" shape.

So you don't need to have any sealant or tape under the gasket/trim?

Sorry, I just saw your comment and just getting around to responding! No, the vinyl is intended to provide adequate protection from the elements without being glued/sealed in. The metal trim (that the vinyl insert goes in) that contacts the trailer siding does have a caulking/sealant under it. I suppose that a majority of water is shed around the opening that way, and only if sustained sideways rain hits the vinyl part will it accumulate, but probably never enough to get up and intrude into the opening or where the screws hold the metal trim on.

I should have mentioned this in the video, and I read on some RV blog that it can expand and contract with the temperature. Keeping this in mind, it is probably better to install when it is cool and make sure there is "extra" pushed in for the corners so that when it gets colder and contracts it won't pull out of the groove. Hopefully that makes sense!

Thanks for the video. You got it done. I can not for the life of me get mine to hold in the corners. I am thinking the trim I got is not as playable as the stuff you used. What I pulled out was more like a rubber.
Anyways thanks for the video and your the man for getting it done.

I hear you. Mine was stiff material as well. I think it is made from vinyl. I wonder if some light heating with a heat gun to where it bends around corner may allow it to relax for you. I'd probably pull it out of the channel before heating it but just a thought.

Make sure it is 3/4 and not 1 inch molding.

This is really missing me off. I'm a mechanic by trade. 30 + years. I've tried installing in winter and now in summer 100°. Maybe it's the brand name. I purchased at Ace. The corners. I cannot keep the inside raidious from bunching up. Ive followed this video to a T.
