This tear of India is a new thing. Sri Lanka is no part of India It was always known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean. Other names were, Thambapanni, Taprobane, Serendib, Seylan and Ceylon- names given by visitors and colonists. Ancient names were Lanka, Heladiva, Sihaladeepa. The Sinhalese were called Helaya in ancient times. Sinhala derives from Siwhela, comprising the four clans of Helayas or Sinhalese.
