Customer spends and hour and $5 in postage to return a small $9 knife he ordered....You can just tell customer has an exciting amazing life with not a lot of spare time to waste on petty issues.
No. The buyer doesn't pay shipping. Ebay forces the seller to pay shipping if the return is anything other than "changed my mind"
But even if the return is a buyers remorse return the buyer can still get ebay to pay them back the shipping after they won the claim. And 9 out of 10 the buyer wins the return claim. No matter what. I know because ive gone through this a few times with very expensive items.
What the seller has to do is open a fraud claim. They make you fill out some paperwork and 9 times out of 10 ebay pays the seller back. Or 10 out of 10 for me.
I was in retail alot of years, believe me you see everything
People are strange and have lots of time on their hands

@RGJHDFR6TGYR5 how would returning an item qualify as a fraud case? Makes no sense
He deserve it to be scammed that Pete
$56 scam is a lot of money for me as a seller, glad you took the action you did!!!
in my experience ebay always sides with the buyer so good luck getting his money back
Let's get this right first: $54,95
Ebay never rules for the seller
Only sellers with limited experience or no track record say that nonsense “eBay always sided with the seller”. I’ve been selling on there for over a decade with thousands of high end transactions and eBay has had my back more times vs siding with crooked buyers. If eBay is not siding with you as a seller, chances are…you’re the problem. Just saying
The buyer is the one who wants his money back.@@speedbird737
Can we just take a minute to admire how sweet this man is to his pets? We know who really runs the show around there, and it’s not Pete. 😉
Yeah man, pets are awesome, sadly they go to heaven too early sometimes.

"There are some characters who abuse this system," is an understatement. I stopped selling on ebay 12 years ago because every. single. thing. I sold was having the buyer trying to scam me by claiming it didn't work or wanting me to refund them and let them keep the item. At one point, the last straw, really; I sold two matched Radeon video cards and the buyer claimed they didn't work and wanted a full refund - and without permission sent back ONE card. Just one...but wanted the refund for both. I had to get eBay involved and they found in my favor at least. I'm not sure what gene it is that some people have that makes them so dishonest but I don't have it. I've never figured out how to be like that to other people.
I stopped buying anything from Ebay because of my last experience. I ordered something that was listed as new in box, but when it arrived it was clearly wrapped in saran wrap, not factory shrink wrap. Also the unit inside looked like it was cleaned with Ajax.
The same people looted stores during the riots.

This is why I videotape myself opening any returns so they can't claim they sent the right item when its clear they didnt
Good point
I thought of doing that, but wouldn’t you need to get the video of receiving the item from the shipping company and then opening it?
Good idea!
TheRockBoS
It begs the question, why are you still using videotape. when Videotape has not been commercially used for
over two decades?
Have you not examined using other recording technologies such as digital?
Recordings are recordings either way, but videotape is considered old technology.

Imagine going through the trouble of sending back a 10 dollar knife.
Yes that is crazy! I'd have kept it. I they probably thought it was bigger. Lol
I’ve done the same for Amazon, even packed it 1000% better than it was when they shipped it out to me even though it had arrived as broken, and drove it out to a freight forwarder. All because I understand that engineers and the supply chain need and may even value real examples of what went wrong, and what can go right. Knowledge easily trumped that article’s value that day. So when yours arrived well-packed and not broken, you can thank me, or at least if it isn’t ok, not curse me.
@Anthony: Re your "Imagine going through the trouble of sending back a 10 dollar knife."
More than that is the reason: "I changed my mind"!!!
Personally, I wouldn't put the other person to any sort of trouble or loss just 'cause I "changed" my mind. Not gentlemanly.
And if at all I went through a change of mind I would be willing to compensate the other person to a reasonable extent for their time, trouble and potential loss of business.

Hahaha, cats love boxes until we suggest they go in and all the sudden they're like, "What are you doing?! Don't you know i'm claustrophobic?!"
I caught that to. It's like whoa, I'm not going in there if that's what you WANT me to do. Cats have their own mind.
LOL....NOT going in that box because you want me to!!
If you want a cat to go in a box tell them they can’t go in the box
Don't you mean, "clawstrophobic"?
The parrot and cat's interaction at the end is awesome. I watch it when I want a feel good moment. I like the way you tactfully handle misbehaving customers.
Agreed. I think their interaction might be the best part of the video!
I must say that was pretty cool that the two of them get along or so it seems, haha. Interesting that they play together like that.
Seeing a parrot dance was hilarious and adorable😊
Until you do this day in and day out, you don't realize how much work it actually is. Especially with the Internet allowing folks to much better determine items they sell or donate. Ebay needs to support these sellers against these petty scam artist buyers.
You have to admire this man for loving his animals ❤️
I love how he interacts with his pets. The bird is gorgeous and his cat is so pretty.
Totally agree!
I love the way he interacts with the Cat and especially that beautiful bird. The dancing thing really made my day. How is it possible that a bird knows how to dance and gets so personal. Peace in the world, thank you sir.
Just found your show, totally dig it man. Having been in retail for over 50 years and just retired, watching your show helps to remind me why I don’t wanna go back into retail! I hate when people are sneaky and return the wrong item. It is so frustrating. I hope this ends well in your favor. In my experience it has not ended well for me they've sided with the buyer.

My favorite part of this was you dancing with Ruby! She is so sweet and you can tell she adores you! ❤️ Her dancing is pure bliss.
I stopped using ebay because I sold breakers to a guy. The breakers were 1 day past the arrival date (not sure why). He put in ebay that he didn't receive them on time. So ebay told me to refund him while he still has my breakers. So I'm out the breakers and the money. People are learning how to scam ebay better and ebay just falls for it
Another trick you can do is mark items with an invisible (UV) pen to know whether or not an item was swapped for a bad one. Also anti-tamper decals are good to prevent parts swapping return scams.
Please let the buyers also know that this could be mail fraud.
It is internet mail fraud, a federal offense. But the buyer can argue he accidently sent the wrong item back. If he has a paper trail of doing this, he should be reported to USPS inspector general.
i see it as mail fraud, it is a lot easier to be honest. most folks are. it's the few dishonest folks that make it hard on everyone. scammers and cheaters suck.
ugh customers do this all the time to me on ebay but they can't fool me...also i get the scammers that use threatening coded words "give me a partial refund just because or i can leave u negative feedback" this is actually a violation..tell ebay... they can't do that especially if nothing is wrong with the item and they wont return it
I appreciate you making this.
I sell on eBay as well. Run into these situations far more than I ever should. People need to be more aware of how to handle these problems. This is a great step by step on how to handle it. You did it perfectly.
Ebay and their policy of protecting scammers will be their demise if they don't get their act together. I'm a seller too, and I'm not going to be there much longer. The stupid policies against sellers combined with their outrageous fees had gotten WAY out of hand.

In the UK we had an issue with buyers returning high price ceramics saying 'item was broken in post'. On one occasion, after seeing the same seller was returning for the same reason, it became apparent the buyer, was buying a damaged piece (very cheap) and then a perfect piece, he would then return the broken piece to the seller he had purchased the perfect piece from claiming it was broken on arrival. Dealers tend to talk to each other and we caught him by marking the extremities of a piece he purchased, on this occasion, a Beswick horse, marking the ears, tail and feet with an invisible security marker. Sure enough he returned the piece saying it arrived broken, however none of the marks we had put on the piece we sent were present. The person was reported to the police for suspected fraud, as well as eBay.
I stopped selling on ebay because of too many returns---ebay always sided with buyers. Tired of giving stuff away and the cost of postage.
How many is too many?
@East ßeirut Interesting, I've been selling on eBay since 2008 and I could count the number of dishonest/scamming buyers I've dealt with on one hand.
Bernie’s Bootlegs I’ve had a lot over the years, depends on what their buying and how easy it is to scam I guess. You’re lucky lol
It use to be that way but the past 5-6 years they did a 180 catching on to these con artists. At least that’s how it’s been in my experience. Sorry you had bad experiences man, puts hard working people out of business all to save a couple dollars, it’s sickening.
@East ßeirut yeah, I don't really sell high value items (like more than $1k) online for this reason.

Had a store on ebay and closed it last year because of all the nonsense. Ebay virtually always sides with the buyers, no matter there reasons or proof you have otherwise. Ebay even took money out of my account to give a FULL refund to the buyer even though I had previously addressed the buyers complaint and refunded 50% per the buyers request. I didnt argue, and then ebay refunds the full amount. So now the buyer still has the item and 150% of the purchase price. What a nightmare mess. I was so sick of it that I just quit selling.
Add to that the negative feedback they slap on! Not sure how much more abuse a person can take.
Thank you so much for posting this. I had a buyer return something to me, that they switched their old one for my new one. Upset me very much. Thanks again👍🏽🙏
I've been selling on ebay since 1998. Ebay will 99 and 44/100th % of the time side with the buyer. I sold a 1995 POTF star wars ship (at-at), brand new, sealed because I bought myself from Toys r us. It contained 2 exlusive figures. The buyer returned the item claiming it was used. Guess what he sent me - a similar used item missing the figures and other parts from 1996. Ebay sided with him, refunded the full amount after taking $25 from my account for the shipping. The person got my new item and probably sold it. Ebay has become a haven for scammers because of their lenient return policy. You can't even leave negative feedback as a seller anymore.
Thanks for being a dad to your animals. I mean, a real dad. And, even though you're a Hawks fan, you like hockey and that's cool by me!

I was at an auto parts store one day when a customer
came in with a box. He wanted to return this truck grille
he had special ordered. The parts man pulled the part
out of the box to check it & found the customer had
painted the chrome grille flat black. The customer
tried to argue that he had not painted it, but, the box
stated on the label FORD F150 CHROME GRILLE
Plus, the partsman said he could smell the fresh paint.
The idiot had not test fit it to his truck and he had
special ordered a grill for the wrong year model.
The partsman made him eat it. He was SO pissed.
Well, dont do stupid stuff.

@Craigslist Hunter: I don’t use ebay, but noticed your clip title and was interested in the nature of the scam and how you would handle it. You handled it like a pro! As you stated, it wasn’t a high value transaction, but the purchaser needed to be held accountable. Maybe you will convict their conscience. Wishing you continued success!
i hate buyers like that....they think they're so smart and can always get their money back.
Wait until you you come up against a buyer that has a "good friend" working in the post office...customer (buyer) places "hold" item at post office....probably after the mail is already on local route for delivery that morning....so now the tracked item looks like it's being held at post office...and never been delivered....and when the seller checks for the item's location at the post office...naturally the item is missing and not at the post office....meanwhile the buyer actually has the item in their hands from their friend that doesn't scan it and files an "open case" against the seller for undelivered item worth $1,800. Buyer then relaxes and sits nice and smug with their $1,800. item waiting for their $1,800. refund...meanwhile seller (me) is working my azz off to locate lost item and I then have to write up a lost item case against the post office for the $1,800. item. Customer (buyer) places "hold item" and his friend delivering mail does the buyer a favor by not scanning it at delivery....this scenario will cause the seller intense grief. It's rare, not many buyers know this....but if a buyer wants to scam....it's the perfect way!!!
I should let you know the conclusion: as soon as the buyer knew i was filing a lost item with the U.S.P.S. for the $1,800. and was not going to make a quick refund to him ( it was going to be a long-drawn out process) ....incredibly, he instantly found he already had and put the item in his collection and didn't realize it cause it was showing "undelivered" on his E-Bay postal tracking so he filed a case....nice!!! He was very apologetic...just an incredible mistake on his part.
Thank you! Always learning, laughing, or celebrating with you all. Keep the antics of Ruby & Honey too!
I've been selling and buying on ebay for @ 20 years just a small seller and have had a handful of cases. So far never lost a case but I try to package carefully and make sure item is as described. I use to sell TurboTax software on eBay. EVERY TAX SEASON I would get several returns that claimed the software was “defective”. I ALWAYS list “No Returns, Exchanges Only”, meaning I will ship a replacement version, but eBay ALWAYS refunds the customer. What a crock. Asshats get free software…
I have opened a small music store recently, we sell guitars on reverb but only parts and accessories on eBay. You’re not even safe buying off of eBay anymore, not to mention the screwy business practices. The very most we’ve ever owed them is $40, now they want access to our bank account to take their money out, whenever they want to. Which we refuse to do, I don’t think many people would want anyone having that type of access. That scam that you just showed us, is new to me, I wouldn’t have even thought about something like that, scammers are smart though.
Regardless of how much money is involved, fraud is fraud and all honest traders like us are the ones who used to foot the bill, the tables are turning and this is no longer being tollerated.
What happened to honour, probably went the same way as respect.
As times change, the biggest difference is the incredible erosion of social trust. I think of examples just in my lifetime, such as how we pay for gasoline. Not that long ago you pulled up to the pump and the cashier inside would switch it on. You filled up your tank and then you'd go inside and pay. (With a personal check if you wanted.) This is just a one small example.
There’s losers out there that do the switch a roo often. It adds up. That’s their business. If they do 20 switch a Roos a month and out of those they get a refund for 2 of them they came up. They turn around and sell the item and profit. A lot of human garbage out there.

@@kenmaylin4744 , go to selling on your eBay, on the right side of your Selling page scroll down 2/3 of the way to "shortcuts", 3rd option is 'Block Bidders". @@raenman64 Yes Sir !.. only been selling about 3 months and got a couple of them for the list already.

Besides the blocked bidders list, you set your buyer requirements to block buyers with 2 or more unpaid item strikes in the past 12 months. This block was helpful on 5 or 6 of my items as several nonpayer were blocked. I wish sellers would use this block.
