Princess Mononoke Is Beautiful, But Does It Have Rizz? | CineFix Top 100

Hayao Miyazaki dropped one of his several masterpieces in 1997 with Princess Mononoke. Depicting the battle between Iron Town and ancient Gods of the forest, the film is a gorgeously animated adventure that paints it’s themes vividly front and center. Clint, Cal and Alex talk about where it fits in Miyazaki’s body of work, how James Cameron being a fan makes them feel about the movie, samurai swords in the mail and whether or not Prince Ashitaka has enough rizz to carry the movie.
Meanwhile, Dan’s algorithm plots to kill a god, by getting somebody else to do its dirty work.

Having one of the three reviewers admit they were on their phone for the movie is just sad
Can't argue with him tbh Mononoke is definitely the least engaging Miyazaki movie. Looks great, but it's not a nail biter
@ckellyedits my personal experience was the opposite. Has always been my go-to and favorite of his works.
@@ckellyeditsI would argue that when you’re watching a movie for the express purpose of discussing it, you should pay attention to it even if it’s not engaging you. How can you make a proper judgement on a film if you didn’t even watch it all?
I also assume he gets paid do this, which behoves him to actually pay attention. People should be competent at the things they get paid to do.
@@hyperdeath84If you are looking for competent you will not find it at IGN.
@@hyperdeath84At the end he did say he paused it, and it took 3 hours to get through a 2 hour 15 minute film. I guess you didn't watch the whole video, so you couldn't make a proper judgement. :P
Dude Cal respectfully, not a great take. Also like don’t be on your phone during the movie you’re watching
You don't need that kind of title, you're Cinefix for god's sake
Comments about the awful title are gonna drive the algorithm more than honest conversation about Princess Mononoke.
WTF does it even mean?
@@MrMann0123All this sprawling digital landscape at the tips of fingers and people haven't mastered the secret art of typing 1-2 words into Google😄
Probably the worst title I’ve yet seen on UA-cam
Bruh fr
Nobody who watches his phone instead of a movie shouldn't even be allowed to talk about movies "professionally" - the disrespect!
Why is Cal so rude? You can say you don't like a movie without being so mean-spirited. Interrupting people, tuning out on your phone or computer when you're bored, hijacking coversations to go on random tangents - dude needs to learn how to debate constructively. He's terrible at active listening.
Not too late to change the title
Got you to click.
No I clicked for the top 100. I nearly didn't for this bullshit I didn't understand
No idea who Mr "I'm on my phone during a movie" is but I instantly don't like him for that one, goddamn. Isn't this the channel that never stops harping about Tarkovsky movies?! Imagine scrolling instagram while watching Stalker, you'd miss the whole point. There's a sickeningly entitled perspective to think that a movie should be more engaging than your phone to enjoy. Especially if you then go on to review said movie. Ugh. Not watching this one, sorry folks.
Guess what the have a release of the shout factory DVD 📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀.
this guy is the reason they added music to the quiet part of spirited away
The title of this video is horrible 🤦🏻♂️
What the hell is wrong with Cal? He's not showing a modicum of curiousity about work of one of the greatest artist in cinema's history! Most pathetic display of arrogance.
The title made me shiver in embarrassment
Wtf does it mean?
@@MrMann0123zoomer slang for "charisma".
EmbarRIZZment???
Normally I'm a really big fan of this podcast because it's a celebration of film, but this episode really rubs me the wrong way. That's not because of the title. Even episodes like Three Amigos, where the final verdict is that it doesn't belong on the list, is filled with praise and sharing the host's memories of watching the movie. This episode, Cal in particular feels very negative and most of his complaints feel like he wanted the movie to be something it's not supposed to be. Having different options on movies like this is completely fine, and some friction is great in a format like this, but these just feel like a bunch of bad faith arguments for the sake of conflict, rather than genuine arguments or thoughts.
Good lord, that title made me retch
Made me unsubscribe
Saw the title and just unsubscribed
The title is cringy, but unsubscribing just because of it is much, much cringier
You, a wretch, spelling “retch” wrong made me retch. You’re welcome
@@jonsmith1956 announcing it is always cringe. Which is why I prefer to just.....disappear 😶🌫️
The title has no rizz
Movie cane out before our attention spans were ruined by smart phones.
I love that this movie actually shows both sides of the conflict and doesn’t just do the whole “nature good humans bad” trope that’s been done to death already in other media, we actually get to see things like how the villagers are good people that do what they do for a certain reason and that the animals while having a good mindset can also be extremely vicious.
Princess Mononoke IS beautiful and deserves a better title that this
Clint! Show your kids Castle in the Sky! That one gets forgotten all the time and it is so dang good. We just showed it to our 7-year-old.
You guys really dropped the ball with this one. How am I supposed to this stuff seriously when your boy doesn’t take the film seriously?
Dude on the far right would actually shrivel up and die if he tried watching The Last Unicorn
Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie. The beautiful visuals help, but are far from the reason its amazing. I love how there are no villains, just people who have their own goals, some more with a lack of care for others, but life is about struggle. Ashitaka is a fantastically written character. He’s not a perfect person but i couldnt imagine him being done any better. Incredible all around.
Edit: Thats wild to me that people find Ashitaka boring or simple. He’s pretty deep and complex, but often doesnt let his emotions control him. Imagine saying that about Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, for example
I've often said that's one of the best parts of this movie. There's one good guy, but no villians. It's just everybody looking out for their own best interests (or the interest of their people). Which makes this one of the most realistic movies ever.
Princess rules.
44:41 she gets the whole point of the movie. There are no true evil villains in the core cast. Iboshi care for iron town and does what makes sense for them. San cares about protecting the forest from humans and takes action to do it. The pigs are simple animals that can only fight back to protect their world. The Mercenaries working for the emperor are doing their job. And Ashitaka, whose arm is plagued with the supernatural interpretation of hatred, sees how hatred needs to end; it’s worth fighting both sides to prove that. He tries to convince Iboshi, who shows what is good about her side with the lepers and progress with societally downtrodden people. Then San attacks, and Ashitaka sees that hatred, protects the other side, then pleads with the wolves to consider peace. He’s a semi-silent protagonist, aware that hatred should be combatted with violence to protect the good, and fights all comers in his redemptive journey.
I meant his *sacrificial* journey. Did not mean redemptive unless it’s to use the hatred magic in a redeeming capacity against other hateful acts.
Change the bloody title. It's gonna turn off so many people before they even bother to give the video a chance.
I only came because it was top 100. I very nearly skipped it as some garbage parallel project due to the title.
Unfortunate that such a great movie didn’t get the conversation it deserved. Ashitaka comes from a monk town that values honour and nobility, of course that’s going to reflect in his character and demeanour. He’s not going to be a brazen young man trying to appear as something other than that.
Thats why he also doesn’t side with anyone cause because he sees the honour in both. Both sides are motivated by love and charity for those who cannot defend themselves and that’s what he sees with his eyes “unclouded by hate”.
I understand Princess Mononoke isn’t for everyone and it’s not necessarily my favourite Miyazaki by any means, but I still respect it as a great piece of animation and cinema. It’s a shame this conversation boiled down to such triviality at times when it could have been so much richer.
what the hell is the title
Idiocy and it makes we wonder about the top 100... just like discussing Star Wars and not once mentioning John Williams
Did either one of you watch the video to get the joke or are you just bitching for sake of it?
Using "rizz" in the same sentence as his film is the kind of shit that's going to literally kill Hayao Miyazaki.
Thank you! It does a great disservice to the man & his incredible works
One of the greatest films ever made, and they give the video a title oozing with middle school cringe
What does it even mean?
@MrMann0123 are you working for IGN? I've seen you in every comment. You know you're fueling the algorithm right? Just watch the damn video or do a Google search
@@carmawarlock8455 So are all you guys coming in to tell people that their comments about the title boost the algorithm.
Alex please for the love of god lower that mic from your face🤦🏽♂️😂 I couldn’t stop staring at the mic😂
wild (actually pretty standard) to see such a neolib take on a Miyazaki movie from a guy who admitted to barely paying attention
Wait, American white guys don't connect with the themes of Princess Mononoke?
Ive started my own personal moment in these lists called "wow Callibro, you suck" and it came early this week. I get people have opinions, but when he said he could barely pay attention to to this movie... "wow Callibro, you suck"
Talkin bout they cheated cuz they used computers... okay so I guess the majority of animation for the past couple decades cheated as well
If you spend Princess Mononoke on your phone, you don't deserve being on a video talking about it. This movie is a privilege
Knowing the story behind its distribution, i respected Hayao Miyazaki even more than ever. Harvey "Scum" Weinstein is not on the same league as his.
Spill the tea?
@@ckellyedits toshio suzuki (producer) sent a katana to harvey weinstein with the note "No Cuts" as a warning after they butchered the American release of "Nausicaa"
Either it's your age or being American but not knowing about a brutal internal war in Europe is depressing
Are you aware of the gang turf wars going on in California right now, because that's a bigger land mass and population than Yugoslavia. Ugh Europeans are so self-righteous
I really love these podcast format videos you guys do keep up the good work. One complaint, can you guys please hook Clint up with a crispy camera? Watching him in 480p for 1.5 hours is rough
Was excited to watch a 1.5 hour discussion about a great movie, then the guy said that he was on his phone a lot. Why even watch the movie if you can't give your attention to it? Drop it, instead of disrespecting the work.
One of Miyazaki's best films.
Why be on video if you block your face with the mic?
Going to be honest here. The title, and teasing about possibly bumping this movie from the list made me just turn the video off. I can see other movies on this list having this title or that opening, but PM? Are you fucking serious?
Cal is burning bridges left and right. I honestly lost a lot of respect when he stood his ground with Robin Hood, considering he based it purely off nostalgia and nothing else, his comedy takes made no sense, and now this. I don’t mind that he hadn’t seen it, that happens. I very much mind him not giving it his full attention
And dear lord please stop over talking everyone and saying “Like” every other word
His only contribution to this show is its worst segment. I legitimately don’t know why he’s here. He feels like someone that IGN forced on the panel, because he clearly wasn’t on the original Cinefix team.
Was gonna watch this review, then one host said they kept checking their phone, which basically renders one third of this panel irrelevant.
If you can’t pay attention to a film for two and a half hours then maybe you shouldn’t be discussing it.
Oh the irony. You're the second person to say this and if you had watched the whole video you'd have seen him say the paused the movie while he used the phone. You're actually more guilty than him of the thing you're criticizing him of.
@@joebloggs2908 As I said in another comment, I’m under no obligation to do so as I’m not on a podcast discussing Cinefix videos. I can dip out on a long form video whenever I please. When a host makes a bad impression, I don’t feel overly compelled to continue. Again, if I was explicitly asked to watch a movie for the purposes of discussion - even one that was not engaging me - I would just sit and watch the movie.
@@hyperdeath84Absolutely right. However making a misinformed comment about a video you didn't watch the entirety of is another thing altogether.
@@joebloggs2908 5:15 He literally says "I paused a lot." and follows up with the independent statement "I was on my phone a lot.", he did not in fact say "I paused the movie to be on my phone.". And while I'd love to hear that he corrected this statement later on, damage has been done. That's still a really bad take for a MOVIE REVIEWER to have for such a renowned movie.
It's fine to have a differing opinion about the movie, but not even doing the bare basics of what you're paid to bloody do, then no. Why should I bother watching this clear amateur, or even respect his opinion? More guilty? Nah.
As a film school grad, Clint is the cool dude who I could talk to about any movie, Michael is the dude who I’d pretend I hadn’t seen a single movie to avoid talking to him. They are definitely two different types of film student.
I know a lot of people watch this like a podcast but the mic placements still bothered me
Ya my wife always complains that the mic covers Alex's face
Welcome to another episode of 3 strangers tend to get on your nerves by not respecting your favorite movie
Although Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie(not just Ghibli) i would say Spirited Away is their best movie. Just universally good and accessible. Rare that you would ever find someone didnt like Spirited Away
Awesome cool is that's.
Princess Mononoke was the first Miyazaki film to be rated PG-12 in Japan, mainly for the violence. He took some heat from some quarters of the Japanese public for that, because they only expected him to make family friendly movies. Also glad that you mentioned Joe Hisaishi, and BTW, it is pronounced Hisa-ee-shi.
The slack jawed bewilderment that my face contorted to during Cal's "Pittsburgh soliloquy".
My favorite film of all time
First one that I agree with Alex the most.
This is an assumption & might be totally wrong, but the guy on the right gives me the vibe of someone who primarily watches action movies & blockbusters & doesn't appreciate movies that aren't BAM, POW in your face
TIL cinefix's audience hate ironic gen Z humor.
"humour" 😂😂
Clint in Dad-mode trying to keep these 2 kids on-task... Alex and Cal attempting not to look at each other because they are each so annoyed!
You all need to check mic height before recording starts. Alex’s was above her nose. 🤣
Like I've been feeling it for a while and I'm not trying to hate but every time Cal talks i just eye roll so hard, a lot of his takes aren't necessary and he's just not funny, he like drives the conversation to a halt a lot of the times
I never thought I’d have a serious, unforgivable kind of disagreement with you guys, but DUB??????????????? NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!! And now that I’ve calmed down, another note - Character is an excellent movie - see it. And, no, I’m not Dutch. I’m Yugoslav (but never knew our wars were an inspiration for Miyazaki).
IGN really tanked this channel

Can we get an edit where Cal’s voice is just fart sounds
I thought everyone in Japan just sent written messages via samurai swords. Its like thier version of a fax. Its outdated, but still very common for business use.
So we gonna act like Ashitaka didn’t rizz up all the working women of Iron Town🤦🏾🤣
Princess Mononoke is THE movie that made me discover what I wanted to do (animation) when I was a lost teenager on his final year of high school.
I've watched it more than 20 times since, and since then, I've been working in the animation industry for the past 15 years, now.
I usually watch pretty much any video trying to dissect it with a vivid passion because I know it's gonna be either good, or with respect and passion.
Regardless of the quality of this video, I will not watch it, simply for its title that already shows no respect whatsoever to this masterpiece of mankind's history by slapping on it one of mankind's most vile creations "rizz".
23:58 Never dubbed, always subbed
Wow, I can't believe Princess Mononoke ranks below Robin Hood...let alone that PM almost got booted. Great episode though. I almost always disagree with you, but overtime that has actually become the aspect I like the most about this podcast.
What the hell is that title
Oh baby now we’re talking
Everything was mostly humming along until 5:00, when one of your panelists opened his mouth for a few seconds and I understood that I’d heard enough. Pro tip for him: talking about how you’re using your phone rather than viewing the work under discussion like some OCD teenager is not the cool brag you think it is.
Robin Hood higher than Princess Mononoke.....Cinefix.. So glad Alex kept her ground.
I'm sorry Cal, but your level of professionalism really showed here. I understand movies are subjective, but as a "professional" reviewer and not even paying attention unfortunately means your opinion holds less weight.
Are those microphones gradually getting higher?
I feel like all the complaints about rizz are people who have not seen this episode and the (to me) hilarious conversation about rizz and the characters. Like, c'mon.
I just don't get why rizz is applicable, outside of using buzzwords
Did you know ....
When someone say "something is something, BUT ...it means the first paet is just BS.
Why is the mic covering half her face. She has it so high 😂
Cal Defending Robin Hood had me laughing.
Mononoke is not San's name. It means "curse". She's the Curse' s Princess. 🙏
No idea what the title even means, but I think Princess Mononoke is a very romantic film.
That title 🫣
I appreciate Miyazaki's work. But something about his style and pacing ALWAYS puts me to sleep. It's just so... relaxing.
Why is Alex constantly hidden behind the microphone! Cannot see her face, see what she is saying. Y'all need to fix her positioning and/or microphone.
This Cal guy probably was frustrated because he couldn’t figure out who the good guy and bad guy were.
With everyone. Guys, imagine Miyazaki for a second, not greatest title.
a Mitch Headburg reference 👏👏
Damn what is this attention span
Have noticed it getting worse week on week but this episode was especially egregious - Clint REALLY needs to stop cutting Michael off. Looking forward to more anime on the list (Kiki's is my personal favourite Miyazaki)
We are doomed as a species
In order, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Tales of Earthsea.
Horrible list
@@carmawarlock8455 each to his own yes? You’re entitled to your opinion, no matter how pontificating they are.
LOLZ justice for Ashitaka! I thought he was hilarious. Like he just... said anything. Also, I feel like Cal really just did not get GET this movie and is sort of clearly on the side of capitalism?!
People in the comments need to chill out and take a joke.
I can't watch any of Miyazaki's movies dubbed. Has to be native Japanese all the way...
The title is fine though
One day. Alex will get over the Robin Hood bashing.
You can watch this video that takes an hour and a half to talk about the merits of Princess Mononoke or you can just watch the movie. Also introducing characters and their motivations through things that aren't action set pieces, like eating a meal or saving a wounded man, is exposition. Then what is a good movie to you?
Man, I really tried to like this series because I like the conceit and really like Clint (and Alex is good too!), but Cal has killed it for me. He's just off with these things, overly smarmy and doesn't always seem to know what he's talking about.
Will probably try a few more, but people don't click on a link talking about the "Top 100" movies of all time thinking that a pundit will spend the majority of the time bashing the subject...
My wife is more of a "Howls Moving Castle" person and my favorite is "Porco Rosso" but we all agree on Miyazaki as a whole. We both love "Kiki" and "Ponyo" and of course "Mononoke"

Amusingly it was a Miyazaki movie that won the “sub v dub” war for me, back before there was one. On the same VHS I had the Nausicaä JP raw and the godawful Warriors of the Wind dub, about which even myths are based due to its awfulness.
I would continue to rewatch the JP raws going forward, until I could get more subtitled offerings. Even good dubs still give me a measure of PTSD😝
…therefore lazy and basic. 😝
Seems a bit weird to be so down-bad on Ashitaka. A lot of movies have your audience/insert moral cipher. It’s through him we have to process all the various conflicts that are bouncing against each other (Eboshi, the forest spirits, the Emperor, the gods themselves, the “normals” just trying to survive) without having a frame of referenced forced on top of it.
Captain America being Captain America doesn’t make either him or IP he’s in “bad” by nature. And lots of Miyazaki movies have that kind of character (Nausicaä, Sophie) highlighted against the rest of the insanity of the world, the strangeness of everyone they meet…. Lots of literature does this as well.
Certainly lots in the “kinda fairy tale” direction.
The Avatar comparison is bizarre, since you can make an argument for both sides of the conflict in Mononoke, but Avatar is very clearly "humans bad".
To be fair, James Cameron did say that he was influenced by this film, but, true to form, he lost any nuance along the way.
This Cal dude is the answer of mediocrity editors without passion
Repo Man next week.
Definitely my favorite Miyazaki. An obvious scene ripoff by Snow White & The Huntsman (2012). If you've seen both, it will be obvious
what kind of title is this
A movie can't have rizz. Only a person can have charisma. I don't get the point of the title, other than to use buzzwords. Personally, I feel Miyazaki films deserve more dignity. I know its just a word, but I feel like trying to fit Princess Mononoke into some hip, youthful aesthetic trivializes the movie
