Let it be known that I do empathize with your concern that a pope shouldn't place the art of politics above the core of his faith. That said, it's pretty naive to expect nothing political from him. The Church should not bend to the politics of the outside world (in either direction), but The Truth within the Church illuminates the entire field of politics, on a wide range of issues, from unjust wars to abortion to workers rights to climate change to gender politics. The Truth will have its say, and it falls into neither popular camp.

Both were considered popular candidates, but in comparison to the rest of the Cardinals elevated by St. John Paul II they were dark horses for the papal office. Both show and have shown immense humility and desire to maintain the unity of the Catholic faith.

Also, with perhaps with the exception of the election of Ratzinger, when has any speculation about who the next Pope will be ever turned out to be correct? The vultures need to be patient, the current Pope may be frail, but he’s not dead yet. Show the man some courtesy and give him the support he deserves and needs.

I met Cardinal Schönborn once. I lived in Vienna and was passing by the front of St. Stephen's Kirche. There were a bunch of people around but nobody but me recognized him. I went right up to him, kissed his ring and talked to him for about 10 minutes. I can't speak to how good of a pope he would be. But he was extremely friendly and generous with his time ... not a bad start.
He has some health issues.
I pray the next Pope will be someone who seeks reunion. Catholic and Orthodox, we have to understand that the reason we were separated was only political. We have to unite once again and be stronger in these hard times for both churches!

Well said. A difficult situation in a liberal Pope.....very slippery slope that can threaten or erode orthodoxy, conservative principles, and traditional meanings in the Catholic faith. Numbers have it that voting Cardinals appointed by Pope Francis could be at least 75% to 80%. One should see clearly how very liberal instructions issued by Pope Francis result in manifestos and opinions of direct opposition from priests and bishops. Unrests like that might not be different even if liberal directives should come from a synod with a majority of liberal Cardinals. The conservatives may be the voice in the mountains that the traditional faithful will listen to and follow.

1. Schonborn .. He seems the best all-rounder, likely to expand agenda of Pope Francis
2. Tagal .. Clearly well placed to continue agenda of Pope Francis
3. Parolin .. Diplomacy is a virtue
4. Turkson .. Great choice, but with so much of Africa not going for Francis?
5. Erdo .. The conservative option? Also Hungary seems unlikely source with their politics.
I hope those candidate for Papacy will undergo a thourough investigation and research to prevent future arguments and divisions among the faithfuls.

Here’s a modest proposal: how about someone like Lenny Belardo, a.k.a. Pope Pius XIII from “The Young Pope” which starred Jude Law.
In that series
A young cardinal from New York, Lenny Belardo, becomes pope of the Catholic Church when the leading contenders of the Papal conclave fail to win election. Installed as a compromise candidate, Belardo takes the name of Pius XIII and immediately proceeds to challenge the established traditions and practices of the Vatican. In one of his first acts, he decrees that common people are not worthy to gaze upon the Pope's face and appears to a crowd in St. Peter's Square shrouded in darkness. Next, during a meeting with the Cardinal Secretary of State, the Pope states he will now become directly involved in the political affairs of the Vatican, effectively assuming control of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.
Alarmed by his radical changes to the church, several senior cardinals begin a plan to try and control the Pope and assuage him from even more dangerous ideas to the church. In response, the Pope installs Sister Mary, the nun who raised him in an orphanage, to serve as his chief adviser and publicly denounces several cardinals. He likewise threatens to confiscate all the property of various religious orders, in particular the Franciscans, if they do not accept his unquestioned leadership. Following this, the Pope directs that the Papal tiara be removed from a museum and returned to the Vatican as his personal crown.
In a last ditch effort to rein in the Pope, the cardinals arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister of Italy who is subsequently bullied by the Pope and threatened with an archaic papal procedure allowing the Church to direct Italians for who they should cast their votes in local elections.

We need a pope who will not confuse us. We need a pope who does not have favorites or cohorts. We need a pope who will propagate Latin mass n not ban it. We need a pope who will not close seminaries and religious convents which follows the teachings n life of saints. We need a pope who does not make secret agreements esp with communist countries. We need a pope who will not bless same sex union. We need a pope who does not belong to Bergolio's close circle. We need a pope who will not promote one world religion. And many more.

I believe the Latin mass unites people. Having masses in different languages in each parish segregates the faithful.
I don’t know those who attend Masses in other languages than English.
How does that unite us?
I grew up in Latin mass.
After a while your ear is accustomed to the words and the meaning. It also allows for deeper reverence during the Celebration of the Mass.
The Novus Ordo mass has always been able to be said in latin. The Tridentine mass is causing more of a divide within the church.
Let us heal the division so that the whole church throughout the world will once again be united in faith.
@@dominict5566 I believe only parts of the mass. Currently and recently His Holiness gave his permission to allow only the FSSP the ability to use the Extraordinary Form of Roman Rite.

I prefer a reverent Novus Ordo, and occasionally go to Latin Mass, but you are completely wrong about this. IF the Latin Mass is so unifying, how come in every American city in the 1920s, when everyone celebrated Latin Mass the Catholics insisted on having an Irish Church on one corner, a German Church, an Italian Church, and a Polish Church? If the Latin Mass is so unifying, why does the historical record show that all of these distinct ethnic groups to America would not celebrate Mass with anyone who wasn't their people? Literally the only part of these Masses that wasn't in Latin were the homilies. "Unifying" indeed...

They are not like that.
People of all cultures are there. Perhaps they have learned from the past. Not sure but I don’t get the same feeling of segregation like I do in other parishes with separate language masses.
Roman Catholic will have a final opportunity to go back to the early church fathers faith.

Meanwhile I pray for Pope F rancis everyday as well as for the unity of our holy catholic church . For we are to be the light of the world .
