    It’s so nice to watch you take good care of your chicken. Animals have feelings just like people do. She was nice and quiet, she knew you were trying to help her. You’re a good person.

      No they dont, if you were getting raped and murdered in front of a chicken, it would look because of the noise then go right back to pecking. Most animals in no way have feelings like humans. The real world is not the Disney channel

    I’m glad you mentioned that thing about her dying if the egg breaks inside of her. My first thought was why not just crack the egg and pull it out that way? Now I know why! But you did a wonderful job!!

    • @randsamuels
      @randsamuels 4 роки тому +8

      But the egg isn't inside her anymore clearly. So there shouldn't be fear about that. If it broke why inside sure.

      That only applies if the egg is still mostly still inside. In this case, the egg should have been broken, removed and flush the tissue. This poor hen suffered way too long with this unnecessary prolonged photo op.

    Hello, you did a fantastic job and are very compassionate. This is a uterine prolapse due to a large egg but usually this happens to all animals including humans during the birthing process. The egg must be passed and using petroleum gelly was a great idea. Worst case scenario you would have to break the egg but this could cause infection that would lead to scepsis and then death(you would have to clean out the uterine cavity very well). You could also have done minor incisions to allow the egg to pass through but anaesthetic would be useful in this case. Prolapse would be likely again if sutering of the uterus is not done. Overall, great job handelling her and a very patient chicken!:)

    • @tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579
      @tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579 5 років тому +11

      Chickens don't have uterus. 😑. It is called an oviduct. Yes large eggs can create a prolapse. Usually a deficiency in diet though.

      @@tankscrittersandurbanhomes5579 yes you are indeed right that chickens have an oviduct. My apologies for not being more specific, I work with so many animals including cows, horses, sheep, etc. I was mainly referring to the reproductive tract/organ in general but thank you for pointing that out!:)

    I see a lot of people say "you should've brought her to a vet" but do you realize the woman lives in ALASKA? ALASKA. DO SOME RESEARCH ON IT.

    • @dragonlady3278
      @dragonlady3278 8 років тому +31

      I mean I agree to an extent..but I have lived in Alaska and while some places are very remote and such others just seem so. I don't know where this lady lives as I found my way to this video after a very random discussion with my husband about how chickens lay eggs and how they have to be fertilized and such and this popped up after several web pages and UA-cam videos later lol but point being just saying 'she's in Alaska' is too broad. When I lived in Alaska I lived several hours by snow machine outside a tiny town, and then in a city..when I lived in the city and went to school when kids found out I was from Texas they would ask if I rode a horse to school. Then back in Texas they all asked if I lived in an igloo and were quite shocked to hear I lived in an apartment..with AC & heat! *gasp!* lol. So saying 'she's in Alaska' is just as silly to say as those kids questions. Yes much of it is remote and isolated but there are many areas that aren't.

    • @dragonlady3278
      @dragonlady3278 8 років тому +25

      Let's not let the stupid people continue to think everyone in Alaska lives in igloos and has no running water or any of that... And besides many people have chickens in their backyards inside city limits all over the world. They are more common than I ever would have thought.

So I'm assuming it would've been a hassle trying to get there and back... idk dangerous. and she wasn't about to get a vet right away so what does that tell you? Finally a person who realises this problem
      I live in a country where it is not as animal-loverish as america or other western ones
      Many people don't even care about dogs and some even believe they have no soul
      Most vets only care about money and have zero knowledge about an animal
      Have lost many chickens because of the lack of vets, thankfully I have a good amount of knowledge with bird and biology stuff (planning to head towards that direction) so we have managed to save a good number
      There are no bird vets
      Most people keep bird pets in cages, technically they are toys and decorations to them, not actual pets so most live for less than half a year due to stress or lack of nutrition :(
      Kinda hurts seeing them caged as an animal lover when I pass through a street

    Thank you so much for your video. Earlier today I had a similar experience with one of my young hens that was egg bound and didn’t know what to do. After searching online I came across your video. It helped me so much, I did exactly what you did and after carefully soaking her in a warm bath and using Vaseline I was able to gently work her vent area and the egg finally came out. She was so relieved. I will be letting her rest for a few days away from the other hens. Again thank you so much. 🙏🏼

    I had a hen with this condition this evening and found your video- it REALLY helped, THANK YOU for posting. The warm bath relaxed her, and I worked with her 'contractions' to extract the egg.... I didn't even need to use lubrication, although I had it handy...it happened pretty fast. She was a great patient and seemed super relieved when the egg passed. She's all cleaned up now and hopefully she doesn't develop an infection. She had a lot of energy and was eating and doing everything regularly, so I hope she keeps in good spirits. I'll keep her inside until she's healed up all the way, and will keep you posted.

      +Saywardstudio SO happy this helped you and your poor hen! You might also want to feed her chicken "junk food" and keep her calcium down to prevent her body from trying to lay another egg right away. Also restrict her daylight, because their bodies naturally decrease egg production when their light is restricted. That will help give her body some time to heal up. Keep me updated! I'm on Facebook, too, if you're interested in my other Alaska adventures: facebook.com/alaskaurbanhippie/

She's doing fine this morning, I haven't taken her out of the cat carrier to inspect her yet, I figure that would be stressful, but I'm going to have to check her eventually today. I was wondering if some triple antibiotic cream would be ok to put back there to prevent anything developing? I'm keeping it dark and quiet, so hopefully she'll keep getting better! I will keep you updated!

    I'm very impressed with your ability. As a retired RN, I have had to reduce many "people" prolapse problems and I acquired chickens about a year ago so I am learning much. Have given my hen, bound egg, several baths and brought her through the bound problem. My hens are pets first, egg producers second, and I am learning tons about chickens. You are amazing. (I did use some Prep H on my bound hen--don't know if that was a usual procedure but it did reduce the swelling with success) Thank you for your wonderful post. I wish I had lived in Ak part of my life. Perhaps KY jelly would have been better than Vaseline too on your egg problem?

      +Dottie Ferrell That's a huge compliment coming from a retired RN - thank you! Luckily, I haven't had to go through this again since this hen, but KY Jelly is a very good idea. I also applied luke-warm coconut oil to help keep the area moist while it was healing and that seemed to work pretty well, plus it smelled nice. Many people in the Alaska chicken community swear by coconut oil for chicken health (putting it in feed, internal medical use, everything). Thank you for watching and commenting - it's very much appreciated. :)

    You should've tried warm olive oil instead of petroleum. I am glad it worked. Please make sure to give your chicken enough selenium so this stuff won't happen again.

    Thanks!!! We ran into this issue yesterday and your video was the only helpful one we found. We were able to remove the egg and push the prolapse act in. Currently our hen is in our recovery coop by her self and seems to be doing well.
    Time will tell.

    I am so sorry you and she went through this. As a human who had a severe prolapse (obviously without the egg) this is more common in humans than people realize. What she’s doing is reducing the prolapse. In humans it can happen with thrombosed hemorrhoids as well. Bless you for trying so hard with her!

    Nice work in a so difficult situation! I’m dealing with one now that had a huge egg and now has poop hanging up back there. She’s as active as the others and shows no issues, but I need to catch her for a little spa time, clean up on the vent area. I’m sort of thinking she may be having the same issue. She too was egg bound at about 8 months old, I was able to soak her and relax her enough the she eventually released the egg.
    Thank you for your video, you’re right there’s not much out there on the topic to be watched. It’s not that chickens are inexpensive, we are invested in them and their well being. So $65 is a drop in the bucket and worth the knowledge and maybe sorting the issue out. Just think, you and I are so much stronger for what you endured, thank you so much!!

    unfortunately once this happens its likely to happen again.. and worse. I have a poultry farm and we have tried to treat birds when this happens but long term... none of the birds did well. honesty the kindest thing to do is to put them down because it will only get worse.

    You should've like put a rubber band before the egg, as tight as possible, then just push gently the egg out, cut what's remaining of the prolapse and leave the rubber band on, apply some disinfectant and some cream to help her heal up faster, leave it over the night and the next day take the rubber band off, assuming that she needed to lay another egg. That would've saved her, just an advice if this is going to ever happen again to one of your chickens.
