      @@axxel9626 You're instinct is to support the position of solo fide, which is the correct Biblical view. I think you are missing some of the nuance of how God saves us so that we can do things that glorify him. Look at Ephesians 2:8-10 for a clear Biblical explanation of this. The Epistle of James argues against a dead faith. Sometimes James is misused to support a works based salvation, but the misuse does not negate the proper use. If you have genuine faith in Jesus saving you, your life will show it.

John 7:17… anyone who will not DO the sayings of Christ is as a man who builds his house on sand..Matthew 7:26. Most don’t want to do Gods will.. they avoid dying to self which is what the gospel calls for. Reformed Baptist here (1689 London Baptist Confession). I embrace reformed theology but I do not believe in the Presbyterian view of Baptism and especially the infant baptism. Salvation is by faith alone and baptism is just a public declaration of identifying with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection or the public profession of faith. It is not something that saves you. But if you are saved, you should want to obey Christ and be baptized.

    • @joshuasy10
      @joshuasy10 2 місяці тому +8

      I think you're position is reasonable given your understanding of baptism, but those who affirm infant baptism don't think it's just an outward proclaimation, they tie it with being cleansed from original sin and the focus is less on them as an individual, but more of a symbol of being brought into a new family, hense the obvious comparison with circumcision in the old covenant. There's also the fact that as far as I know all of Christendom has practiced infant baptism until relatively recently, and right now Catholic, Orthodox, and major Protestant denominations affirm it. How do you deal with these points?

    • @caseycardenas1668
      @caseycardenas1668 2 місяці тому

      @@joshuasy10I think this topic is far more complex than many people realize.
      Prior to Augustine, it seems that Baptism had vast variety in terms of practice and theology. It's interesting to note that there are numerous early Church fathers who were born to Christian families that were not baptized as infants. Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil the Great, and John Chrysostom to name a few.
      On the other end we also have Hippolytus who mentions baptizing children and those who cannot speak for themselves, most likely referring to infants.

    • @JB-em9po
      @JB-em9po 2 місяці тому +1

      The Baptist idea of baptism being a public declaration is in my opinion partly true. Baptism is best done publicly, but if that’s all it is, you don’t see the apostles going out of their way to make it public. Many of the recorded baptisms are done in relatively private settings. They didn’t wait to get in front of the church body to do it. Instead, baptism should be thought of as the sign of entry to the new covenant. Circumcision was the sign of entry into the old covenant, baptism the sign of the new. Incidentally, if you study how the Old Testament and New Testament refer to circumcision, it was a sign that largely referred to the same spiritual reality as baptism. Yet, the sign given as a seal of righteousness by faith that Abraham had before he was circumcised was also given to his household. The members of his household were given the sign that signified faith, even at 8 days old. Things the line of thinking that led the reformers to accept infant baptism. God redeclares children of believers as covenantally set apart or holy in 1 Cor. 7, so they should receive the sign of the covenant, and the parents should disciple their children from day 1 as believers, praying for fruit and repentance for their children.

For Jesus said, 'He who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned.' Belief alone is not sufficient, but the confession of that belief in baptism is also necessary.” - Origen (c. 184-253 AD)
      “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that does not believe shall be condemned.’ Yet this condemnation comes not from the mere non-believing, but from the rejection of the truth when it has been offered. Therefore, baptism is a means of accepting Christ, and rejection of baptism signifies rejection of Him.”- St. John Chrysostom (c. 349-407 AD)
      “When the Savior says, ‘He that believes and is baptized shall be saved,’ He does not mean that the water is more powerful than the Spirit, but that the water serves as a symbol and the Spirit sanctifies. Faith alone is dead without the works; and thus, baptism, which follows upon faith, is necessary for salvation.” - St. Cyril of Jerusalem (c. 313-386 AD)
      “You have read, therefore, that the three witnesses in baptism, which bear testimony on earth, are one: the water, the blood, and the Spirit, and they bear witness to the salvation of our souls. And this is what is signified in the words of the Lord: 'He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.'” - St. Ambrose of Milan (c. 340-397 AD)
      “We are persuaded that no one can be saved without baptism; for the words of Christ are clear: ‘He who believes and is baptized shall be saved.’ The water of baptism brings the Spirit, and the Spirit brings life. This is why our Lord connects salvation not just to belief, but to the sacrament of baptism.” - St. Gregory Nazianzus (c. 329-390 AD)

    Redeemed zoomer was very respectful. However, to be converted by opinions of man is concerning. I would encourage a personal spiritual experience to confirm a truth, not an opinion or interpretation of man.
    I also can't believe how many people just pick and choose what scriptures are important.... do we cut out the book of James? It says "faith without works is dead"... is he wrong?.... isn't faith a work? This doesn't lessen what the saviour did for us, though. The atonement works whether we are good or not, but surely works directed by your faith could be a better way of living? It God didn't create the world (a work), but nothing could go forward.
    In regards to the circumcisions issue, both can be saved. Circumcision isn't a saving ordinance. Baptism is, though (and baptism is a work, something we have been asked to do, to work towards living with God). This also shows some will be saved and not live with God. Sounds like many mansions? Sounds like more than one kingdom of glory?

    From looking into Ephesians 2:8-10 this is the understanding I get from it. This is how the 3 verses make sense to me. I would love to get your thoughts on it.
    Salvation is by the grace of God which is a gift, we receive this gift by faith
    We can’t say it is by our own doing by working for it because God already made us to do good works. Like a fish can’t boast about swimming and a bird cant about flying, we can’t boast about what we were made to do.
    Real faith is therefore a working faith because we can’t say we have faith in Christ and not do what he made us for.
    However this working faith alone still does not mean we are saved as we still sin and we are born into a fallen world.
    Salvation is ultimately then by the grace of God, we get this by having faith and we have faith by doing the good works we were created for.
    I also looked into the direct disciples of the apostles, Ignatius, Polycarp and Clement of Rome all wrote about faith in a similar way. That faith goes hand in hand with work works.
    Regardless I’d love your thoughts on the way I’ve understood the passage in Ephesians

  • @parker_chess
    @parker_chess 2 місяці тому +13

    I'm a catechumen in the Orthodox Church. And I enjoyed this dialogue even though I disagreed with most of it.
    Salvation - you need faith in Christ but this includes good works. Christ said those who love me keep my commandments. The epistle of James says faith without works is dead. Many times in the scriptures when Paul is talking about works he's referring to the law of Moses and the traditions within the old covenant. Cooperating with God's Grace by being faithful and obediance to Jesus that is what saves. Paul says to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. To claim we have complete insurance of our salvation is false. We know we can fall away which is why we need to spend our entire life in faithfulness and obediance.
    Baptism - this is necessary for salvation. There's so many overwhelming bible passages that support this and the writings of the church fathers.
    Sacraments - Jesus himself said that those who do not eat my body and drink my blood have no life in them. The sacraments are the means of grace. The church is the body of Christ and the priests are those who are ordained to administer the sacraments. The priests represent the Apostles who represent Christ this can be seen when Christ gives the keys of the kingdom to Peter and the laying on of hands to confer the priesthood. Rejecting the institution that Christ established is not trusting and putting your faith in Christ himself. He said that the gates of hades would not prevail against his church. The idea that more than 1500 years later people would come along and rewrite the theologies of Historic Christianity goes against the entire mission of Christ.

    Every passage these two commentators go to in St Paul's corpus they both assume the word meaning associated with their denomination and a version of atonement theory associated with faith and justification excluding works. Presumably the Protestant Christian assumes a form of penal substitution theory which requires the instrumentality of faith.
    Where does the bible and/or tradition teach faith is an instrument when there is no evidence Abraham's faith was an instrument?
    The bible never teaches faith is an instrument of justification.

    Why believe faith apart from works of the law means faith alone when hope saves and faith without love is worthless?

      Typical Protestants standing on their own man made Protestant doctrines. God's church did not fail and become apostate, as Presbyterian and non-denom Christians declare. There is a major misconception in Protestantism when the Bible says that following the Law cannot save you, when every Epistle is referring to the Law of Moses, which was a major dispute in Early Christianity because the former Jews-turned-Christian were telling Christians you still needed to follow the Law of Moses, and many of the Epistles were authoritatively stating that you are not to follow the Law of Moses anymore. But the truth is that you must have faith and follow the Law of Jesus, if you want to have any chance of entering the Kingdom of God. In Protestantism, you can do whatever you want, but as long as you "believe", you will be saved, is a false gospel and a damnable, novel teaching created in the 1600s.

      Cannot part of that Will be accepting that Jesus is the only way to salvation, and that it is not by OUR good works will bring us closer or farther to the kingdom of Heaven, but only through our faith in His (Jesus’s) good work? Because I guess from my perspective if I am required to perform something to save myself, then I do play a part in my salvation. So who saved me? Me + Jesus, which is not just Jesus. I did my part, and he did his part, but both parts were required. We share credit in getting me to heaven.
      This versus Him taking all the credit, He has paid the debt, I realize I am a sinner deserving of hell in need of rescue, I put my faith in His power at the cross that I do not deserve, then out of completely overwhelming love and gratitude towards Him and what He’s done I do good works which are never out of fear that if I refuse (which I wouldn’t, hypothetically, if I want to love and serve Jesus well!) to do them I’ll go to hell.
      What do you think of this? I feel like our ideas on it are very close, but not exactly the same.

      @@David-we3sb We will sin for the rest of our lives because we are sinners, it is inevitable. All sin is deadly and hurts God, but by the power of the Holy Spirit we will also continue to be sanctified; recognizing our sin, being convicted of it, and rejecting it as we come to better know God and His Will. I think this language of cooperate is difficult because if I CO-OPERATE with anyone, including God, we are operating together as distinct entities and thus I get part credit- this versus me accepting and putting my faith in Jesus and realizing that in my sinful nature I can’t do anything on my own, but am in desperate need of the Holy Spirit to purify my desires and point them towards God.
      It’s not an attitude, though, of, ‘Well if God doesn’t want to me do this, he’ll make me stop.’ We ARE able to know God’s feelings towards sin, and if we love God and have the Holy Spirit working in us we will begin to see our sin, hate it, and resist it; thus His desires overtaking and replacing our desires, not by my power but His own.
      Another question if I could ask, does Catholicism believe that any and all sin is deserving of hell, or certain kinds (for believers)? I think someone told me one time, but I don’t think I fully understood.
      If I could add another example too. I would say when I accepted Jesus, my sin became ‘worse’ before it got better- but God was using that to reveal to me how depraved I really was. Was I going to hell at that point in time, or did God know I was going to commit those further sins and cover that sin on the cross knowing that I was His child in the midst of being sanctified (as I still am being sanctified), and in his radical love did not abandon or forsake me, but continued to work in me?
      Because I guess again from my perspective, if I had been separated from God at that point, I would not have had any further conviction towards my sin, but I did because He was in me working.
      No fear of hell ever motivated me away from sin, because I didn’t believe I could be separated from Him, but a complete awestruck gratitude towards my Creator for saving me, not because of what I would or could or would not do for Him, but out of love for me. If He did that for me, how could I keep sinning against Him? Additionally I wish to do good works now, not because if I don’t I’m guilty of sinning against Him, but because I can bring more glory to the God who saved me when He didn’t have to.
      What do you think about that, or what do you think the Catholic position would probably be?

When Paul confronted Peter in Galatians 2, he did so publicly for the sake of the community's understanding. I like to think of grace as a bulletproof vest that God places on us. We don’t choose to put it on, and have no merit in being saved from death by the incoming bullet of sin, but we can choose to take it off and deny the gift that was given to us. We don’t freely choose or merit grace, but we can reject it. The grace from sacraments aren’t earned by us, but participating in them is simply not rejecting His gift

    At 28:23 he says that works are physical action and faith is not a work because it is simply trust. But I think this is counter to what scripture teaches.
    The reason faith isn’t a work is not because it isn’t physical. It’s because it is a gift from God. Otherwise you’d be able to boast about it. That would indicate it could be considered a work if it weren’t a gift.
    Ephesians 2:8-9 (HCSB): 8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift- 9 not from works, so that no one can boast.
    It’s the same idea in Romans. It’s not physical or mental activity in man that is essential, but the action of God on the behalf of his “vessels of mercy”.
    Romans 9:16 (HCSB): 16 So then it does not depend on human will or effort but on God who shows mercy.
