Regarding your questions about why Slovenians better understand Croatians than the other way around, and why Croatians, Serbians and Bosniaks understand each other almost without any problems.
Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin are "mutually intelligible languages" (a term from linguistics). Basically that means that grammar and vocabulary of those languages is very similar (like Czech and Slovak languages, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish, or Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian). However, Slovenian is very much different language than Croatian (and Serbian, etc...). It's still a Slavic language, but it's no more similar to Croatian than Polish or Czech are.
Reason why many Slovenians understand Croatian is because they listen to Croatian music and watch Croatian TV. Also, there are more Croatians, Bosniaks and Serbs living in Slovenia, than Slovenians in Croatia, so that's also a factor.
I hope this explanation (although 2 years late) clears up the issue.
