Into the Archives: Henry III 1228 Charter

Lincoln's Inn has not always been based on its current site, although it was established here by 1422 when the Black Books start.
Originally Lincoln's Inn did not own the land it was on, it was leased from the Bishops of Chichester who had been granted the land in 1228. The original charter in which Henry III granted the land to Ralph de Neville, Bishop of Chichester is the oldest document in the Inn's Archive and is dated 16 November 1228.
