I just have this hugely hard time getting good inventory! It seems like all the hot selling stuff everyone knows about is bogarted at the thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales. Thanks for your wonderful insights! You are the best!

The eBay algorithm determining what’s “garbage” is alarming. Too many behind the scenes games being played but since they are the largest fish in the pond, we deal with it.

Economy is forcing consumers to only spend minimum

That's something he never talked about which is very important especially to those who are selling. Even $1-5 items aren't selling unless consumers really need or want it.

LOL oh yeah, that's why ebay keeps seeing record profits every quarter. I remember ebay telling me a couple years back, that everyone is hurting and it's the economy. Then they send out an email grabbing how they just had a record quarter. Stop blaming the economy. Ebay is selling more than ever.

@@jamesbizs those are corporate level sales that can push volume but as for the rest, I've seen where it got so bad most of them had to go back to a job or another job. So yes, the economy matters.

My Etsy and Ebay sales are way down too. Etsy views alone are down over 48% from last year. People are broke. 😢

I have gotten to where I dont even waste time over there anymore. I may check my account every few days, but I quit trying to grow my store. I have pretty much focused on Ebay. I think Etsy has screwed itself by opening up its platform to sellers from China. Nobody will be able to compete with the flood of cheap stuff that will come pouring in

I have been doing better this month vs last month. Even my off days are still better than the month prior except for one issue. I still get the random "punishment" day where I sell absolutely nothing and then the whole next day will still be nothing until late in the afternoon. I'll get 3-4 sales back to back.

      @jamesbizs 9 місяців тому

lol don't you love it when you have a record sales day tho? OH wait, no. That usually is followed by a no sales day/days.... Because as we know, ebay searches are TOTALLY organic.

Question from this community: I purchased an item with the intent of a local pickup. I won the auction, but there's no option for me to do local pickup and the seller is not responding to any messages for days. We are talking $20 in shipping which doubles the cost of the item as a buyer. Does not buying the auction item impact my standing as a seller??? If it does I can bite the bullet and pay the $20 on shipping (from 10 minutes away) if it doesn't... why would the seller not try to work with me? I would be saving them time and money on packing and shipping.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

The algorithm change is to direct sellers to the pay per click. I got a call back from customer service from an American - which usually is not the case. They went into a lot of double-talk about how many factors determine algorithm presentation. They didn't come right out and say it, but when you are used to selling 10-15 (TRS+ 8 years) items daily and it goes down to one, it's pretty obvious. Don't do it! Don't partake of the pay per click. I tried it and it wiped out a month's worth of profit. Click only benefits eBay. If sellers resist en masse, they will get the message. Again.

interesting, did you change your strategy from listing every day then? i mean i do list more until i get the traffic i want (i'm not worried about sales, only my hits as i know it correlates into a sales ratio over time).

This is such a great video. I'm a small reseller (less than 200 listings), but everything I sell is of a quality that I feel good about. I have things in my store that range in price from 15 bucks to just under 400, but my average sale is 99 and I sell 60-70 items a month. I brought in less expensive items to accommodate changes in the economy, but even those items are quality items. I don't mind waiting for sales, but I don't want to compromise my integrity.

My store seems to do pretty well, but I’m in a highly competitive category. I average about three sales a day and I make good margins. What is everyone’s thought on sending out offers? Do you think it erodes your margins or changes your customers expectations that you’re always willing to sell something at a lower price than what is listed?

@@kmoov90 It is not the economy. Folks are getting tax returns and this is usually a very fruitful selling period. Please see my comment above. eBay is forcing Pay Per Click in a grand way. eBay's stock price is up .48% over the last month. It is NOT the economy. The economy is showing spend spend spend! The Payroll processors are showing wages higher than ever and the lowest unemployment ever.

Chris, this last few weeks I’ve been buying and listing “bad” clothing items because I needed things to sell. Usually I like to list but this is absolutely no fun and I hate it. AND it’s a waste of time. This was a very timely video for me. Yes, I would rather listen to one great item than ten not great items. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

I think at a Certain Level - Over 300$ or over 500$ items get sent to an EBAY Verification Centre, They Look at it verify it and then they send it to the customer, this should be done with all items of a certain value imo, Poshmark gets everything sent to a verification centre over $500. This makes it incredibly hard for high value scams as EBAY or Poshmark will say, we looked at it, you sent us back a different item, etc.

Where did this idea of educating the seller come from? If you’re asking X, and I pay you X - there’s no moral dilemma there. At least not for me anyway. If you don’t understand your product, and you undersell it; that’s on you - Not me.

I’m sorry lol but no. You don’t understand the algorithm that well. Even eBay probably doesn’t. What is a good item? Why is a bad item? eBay LOVES all the sellers listing a ton of cheap junk. They love dealing with China; who has 100 accounts per owner, all listing the same garbage. You listing a good item; doesn’t metrically had eBay see it and say “oh hey! That’s a good item!” Again; WHAT is a good item? All of my competition sells tons of cheap junk in addition to the good stuff. And guess what? Their metrics are better than mine. They can afford to mess up more. The algorithm sees how much they sell and how often the list . It doesn’t give a damn if your item is quality, whatever that even means. Listing often, is better than listing just quality items once a week. Now if your junk doesn’t even sell; then yeah, that’s not good either . But unless you have amazing prices, your quality stuff isn’t going to sell as often either
