    A lot of H's and M's shipped to New Jersey were equipped with the 100" axles for straddling two or four vegetable rows. I'd say they were more common than the standard 80" axles on the H/M/Super H/Super M tractors for our area. They look a little funny on tractors that are only used for shows or parades now, but every once in a while you'll catch one out cultivating a field with the wheels spread out as wide as possible. A local guy currently has a Super C for sale with cultivators, long axles and the rear wheels spread all the way out, and it's too wide to haul on a trailer.

    100" axles were more common out here where sugar beets are raised. My grandpa helped a neighbor during harvest running a super M. He told me they'd break one or two axles every season as there was so much equipment mounted to the one side of the tractor along with having the wheels moved out so far on the axle.

    Back in the day, the letter series tractors, were shipped from Rock Island to the dealers on railroad flat cars.
    They dished the rear wheels in to provide extra room to get as many tractors as possible on each flat car.
    So yes, any tractor arrived with the wheels dished in from the factory. The receiving dealer would then either leave the wheels as they were, or dish them out per the customers needs for row crop wheel spacing.

      my dad told me ford's were made so short wheel base because he could load them across the flat car and get more on the car and ship them cheaper. he didn't like ford's because he had seen tractors raise up and flip over and killed the farmer.

    Another great video, especially about wheel widths and plough allignment.
    I remember so much as a teenager at farming college, we had a lecturer who looked over his half moon glasses at us and said
    " If the tractor and plough are pulling right the tractor will steer itself" and I allways believe he's was so right.
    Great to see it spoken about again.
    Keep the vids. coming. Martin. (England)

    My '40 H has the 100" axles. Been on the farm since new. We used it mostly in the summer for cultivating and always had the hubs dished out and out to the end of the axles. The outer bearings haven't been replaced since I've been alive (I'm 64) but we did break an axle twice (if I remember Dad telling me correctly). I've been looking for another set of the special axles for my '50 so I can use the cultivator on that tractor. Great job on the painting and thanks for all the tips and little tricks. 👍👍👍

    Snow til late April and Mosquitos as soon as it melts off??? Visiting LeSeuer and getting to meet Da Squatch was great, but man, I don't know if I could deal with more Minnesota. I'll just hang here and watch the goings on via the 'Tube and say hey each April. On a different note, because your H project is moving ahead, I decided it's high time to lay into my grandad's old 43 H that I "restored" back in high school with rattle cans and a very limited budget. Now I can do her justice and make it right, thanks for being a bit of an inspiration my northern friend!

    The main reason for being able to adjust the tire tracking was for row cropping meaning what the center of your row crops. As in 36" width rows or 30" 22" or 15" width rows, even in the old days corn was planted in 38 and 42 inch width rows, not so common in today's farming practices.

    *Regarding your seasonal allergies.* If you are not already using it, find local raw honey and go nuts with it. Give it a few months of 2 - 4 tablespoons (More if you have a sweet tooth like mine) a day mixed in with whatever you want made sweeter and the odds are you will see a huge reduction in your allergy problems.
    Ideally, go right to your local Aperaries (The Bee guys), and get it raw right off their bulk systems. 1 gallon is about $30 - $40 depending on the location and time of summer.
    I used to have horrible summer allergies but since starting the raw honey thing several years ago, I now have nothing to at worst a minor few 10's minutes flare up now and then when around extremely heavy pollen sources (so thick I can taste it and feel it in my teeth levels) I was hypersensitive to in the past.
    It's a slow inoculation effect so don't be surprised if you don't notice anything for several weeks or more. It took mine almost a whole summer to really take effect.

    I have seen a photo by John Deere in one of the manuals for their plows from the 1950's showing either a 70, 720, or 730 pulling a 4 bottom plow as I recall. The tractor and plow were meticulously adjusted for proper alignment. The tractor and plow were coupled with a 20' chain between the tractor and plow. It was plowing perfectly. It was a photo from above the tractor. I would love to see that picture again. I am sure most of the other manufactures also had similar photos.

    Toby, the last few tractors I painted the axles that needed to be black I used the old Dupont No. 33 tire black and painted it on with a brush because like you gloss black was to much and the flat black wasn't enough. The reason I used it once was we were out of any black in the parts department so I was in a hurry because the owner was wanting to get the tractor on the lot for sale. So I went back in the shop and decided to try the tire black, because I always had a can of it setting around because every used tractor that came in if the tires were not to worn or dry rotted the owner wanted those tires blacked so they looked better. From the first time I used it I was sold on using it from then on. I got so many compliments on those axles about how I made them look so good so I stuck with it.

    For any given track width , the axle loads on the bearings will be identical, whether the wheels are dished in or out. Granted it *SEEMS* like there would be more twisting force with the wheels dished in, it's a very compelling illusion, but the only thing that matters is how far from the bearings the center-line of the tread is.

    If only you had one of those “cent an acre meters” that the Deere dealers used in the 50s to sell tractors. Then you could test your fuel economy to see if the plow helped or not. Really just a quart mason jar with a line marked on it. You hooked it to the carb got the tractor in the furrow filled the jar to the line and drove till the tractor ran out of fuel. Take the other tractor hook to same plows at the same place you started before and see how far it goes till it runs out. The guy I worked for that was the Deere dealer back then was a master at setting plows and he prided himself that he always could get close to a football field length or more out of his tractors than the competition. It sold a bunch of tractors for him back in the day.

    Nice work, buddy! That red is really looking good. Got a nice shine to it, too! I appreciate you taking the time to talk about gun settings. I have been pretty timid about laying paint on things simply because 1) Paint is expensive and 2) Having runs means spending more money on paint... More work in sanding, etc. But, there is only one way to learn! Looking forward to seeing the pieces put together. Skeeters are BAD here as well. I have sprayed the yard TWICE, and it hasn't phased them a bit!

  • @Drottninggatan2017
    @Drottninggatan2017 Рік тому +2

    The only thing affecting the wheel bearings is the distance between center of tire and the wheel bearing itself. Turning the rims or hubs one way or the other doesn't matter. Extended (longer) shafts might have been used by people who put the wheels further out, and hence put more stress on the bearings. Same thing as using duals and running the outer wheels on a raised edge around the field.
    You are not going to have a two furrow plow pull perfectly straight. They always pull to the right.

    5:08 yup, this is common across the board. As long as one uses the original parts, all configurations are permitted and accounted for. There's even variants where the wheels are offset so that the body is pushed to one side or another, with extra weights on the "light" side, unfortunately, those i've seen are also ones where the shaft (on the heavy side) got torched out, which is a bummer.

    Something else often forgotten. The way IH had to ship tractors by rail, and also by truck. Dished out was only way they would fit, so they left the factory dished out. Especially by rail. They would put two Farmalls per flat rail car, so dished out let them nose the two tractors together with one going along side the other. A wide front tractor they couldn’t do along side the other, they had to nose them square up.

    Great work. Great content. Although I'm 'seasoned' in my interest of all things Ag, I have zero practical experience. The older tractors and their model designations baffle me. How does the horse power rating of the H (and the M, and your other older tractors/dozers) compare with your Kubota and other modern tractors? Trying to understand, for example, how you match or gage the horse power to the number of plow bottoms a tractor can/should pull?? On 'plow days' different tractors that look similar are pulling different numbers of bottoms?

    I've always heard it said that it's better to adjust the tractor to the plow rather than the plow to the tractor. And if its a tractor that's only going to be plowing and you never have to mow or cultivate with it (i.e. things that require the wheels to be set out wide), then there's no reason to worry about having to try to adjust it a bunch. Plus the old Farmalls were a lot easier to change the spacing on than the old John Deeres were. Splined axles and clamps like to rust in place lol.

    • @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch Рік тому

      Splined axles along with the need to pull the steering shaft just to remove the hood were probably the two biggest flops of John Deere's design. What a cumbersome maneuver for such a simple task!

    • @NEAFarmKid4010
      @NEAFarmKid4010 Рік тому +1

      @Kenny Kizzle Rusty Nutz Ranch on the two cylinders yes those are their two biggest flaws. On the New Generation (especially the 3010 and 4010) their biggest flaws were the hydraulic couplers, putting the controls up on the dash where they're hard to get to, and making it so you have to pull the front axle out remove the hydraulic pump.

    • @aserta
      @aserta Рік тому

      All these spline type tractors were and are designed for wheel changes. They were meant to "pull" different jobs, sometimes in the same day or with quick changes, so they're not meant to be set and let to sit. My brother still keeps three old style tractors for work in the apple and pear orchards and those three have their wheels changed from side to side from row to row. Nowadays, it's normal to have more than one horse, but back then, "this" was the horse, and by bread and water, you'd "cut" his legs and glue them backwards if that's what the job needed.

    I need to get out more.

    How is your eye not twitching with that hose so tangled? Thanks for the details and that plug kit info too.

    Great looking paint job man. Old tractor looks good enough to eat. Did you spray a clear coat on it or is it just a high gloss paint? It shines like a diamond on the screen I'm watching on.. By the way I was a pipe fitter and pipe welder for years and I would save those caps and plugs that came in the pipe, identical to your kit.(which is pretty dang cool). You may want to check those industrial packaging supply companies they have them and may be cheaper than caterpillar. Really digging the channel, keep up the great work

    Can you put dual wheels on the long shaft.
    Why would you want such a wide spacing on your rears for a tractor with a trike front or dual front with a narrower spacing.

    Great video Squatch. Just curious but is Sr. going to start work on the Farmall 350? You teased that it "could" be a 2023 project. Is there more than transmission issues? You do have the paint gun out. Lol.

    The reason wheels were dished out was easier to ajust wheel to cultivate corn and beans back in the days and if tires were loaded it was a hard job to switch wheels side to side instead of just sliding on axel. farmers had to do that on the little fords to cultiate. ln later years when 30 inch row were used farmer would turn the wheels around to cultivate 30 inch crops like you have now. Also in hill ground narrow spacing were dangerous on side hills!! l will be watchin!!

    The wheels do not have be set the same on each axle. I understand it looks better but they were made adjustable to fix draft, row widths, etc

    Oh I know from my visits to Canada in the 60 s they log in the winter because the bugs are so bad especially in the spring. They have big problems with black flies in some areas up there.
    Also the marshy areas are frozen so they do not get stuck.

      Black flies are bad here, too, in Minnesota. They always go for your ankles! Between skeeters, black flies, horse flies, and ticks... We've got our share of pesky pests!

      The black flies can be brutal in Michigan's upper peninsula. I swear them things actually removed flesh when they bit into me. I was afraid 10 or 12 of them were going to gang up and drag my carcass off into the woods, never to be seen again!

    With those special axles one could almost install a second set of wheels, much like a dually truck. Doing this might even balance out the load on the outer axle bearing would it not?

    The special 100inch axle shafts could have maybe suited twin wheels, could that be correct?
