I’m three days into figuring out permanent Xmas lights and was about to give up. I just couldn’t figure out the controller bit. Thank you for telling me I could do it. It’s just what I needed. I could cry. I was one second from all that time down the drain.
Great update! I sent you an email a couple of days ago with some pics of my setup. This video answered several of my questions. WLED now working for me. For some reason my sacrificial pixel set up was not working, so I just moved the Nodemcu (?) closer. Now waiting for your supply of Dig-unos! Thank you for the video! More importantly, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge!!!
I find your beginners videos extremely helpful to me as far as wiring and programming. With me, when it comes to hooking up electricity to electronics it's like drinking and driving....they don't mix! You've explained it in very great detail on how to connect everything, and I thank you! I was wondering if you could make a video for beginners on how to run these wires outside and on how to keep them away from the elements of weather (so rain, snow, or even people) don't/can't touch the wiring? If you could also include what you could store your metal power supply in to keep it safe as well (outside)? That would be a homerun video! Thank you for your educational videos! Keep up the good work! 👍
@10:23 Turn off is simple... save a preset with the top left on/off button in the off state (set colour to black to avoid flickering when transitioning. it will then quickly fade to off).
Thanks for the update! Wish it came 2 weeks earlier before I nose dived into the hobby lol I researched, ordered, and installed a 500+ pixel show for my roofline using nodemcu.... Now on to start building mini trees and a few other smaller props and hoping that I can get my hands on a quad or uno in the coming weeks and transfer everything over. Thank for your dedication and willingness to share all this useful information. Oh and don't forget to end your live next time lol
Dude!!!! Just finished my setup about 985 pixels but prob gonna order a new board. This video answered some questions I had. Also I had questions and you graciously answered them for me in email form, these videos made everything so much easier. Thanks!!!!

Doc !!! A great big thanks from the North East UK, Ive just started 'dabbling' with LEDs and WLED. I only have 200 at present spaced around 2 windows and a door but it looks great and will be adding more next year (along with a Dig Quad) Take care, Kev
my digiuno just came in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to start playing with them. Any tips for a waterproof box that fits both the digiuno and power supply? I can make something work, but if you had something made for purpose i'd prefer that.
Appreciate the updated video, recently did my setup, and now my Dad and one of my Brother in laws have been asking me about my setup, this video will definitely help them.
I bring up Drzz's story daily and watch for them to be in stock. In the last 2 weeks I grabbed 3 Quads and an Uno (3 weeks ago). You have to switch between the network connection options or you will miss when Items are in stock. Example: the onboard Wi-Fi was not in stock but the external antenna was in stock and so I grabbed them.
Interesting video. I'm trying to update the colored LED's under our motor home. Have you done any tutorials about waterproof color changing LED's under RV's? I need help as I don't know what the best LED strips , Controllers and remotes are.
Great info, but these have been out of stock for at least the past few days (I actually was on your shop a few days ago to get an alternative to my finicky nodemcu), which makes it rather frustrating to see all the great new features but we cannot actually buy them.
Always been intimidated with programing chips or using anything of the sort, thank you for such simple and direct instructions! Definitely following you!
Thanks for all you do, love your controller. My led light bulbs flashed with WLED, should come today. Super excited to add them to the front of the house. If you haven't you should do a video about the new WLED flashed light bulbs built in controlers.
Hey there left a previous comment and I never video but just wanted to say thank you so much for the follow up video that highlights some of the new tech
Great update. One thing I was wondering, is it possible to create a potlight effect with LEDs run around the roofline? Ie, not all lit, but a few lit in several locations?
In the configure leds section, you can set which pixel to start and stop your pattern . Ie on pixel number 38 thru 100 you can have a pattern in that area that you counted. It's the start/count option
I've just bought one of these controllers to play with (dig quad), one with ethernet port on top, looking forward to having a play with it later today. Although on the one I've got I can't see any jumpers on it to select the voltage like in your other video 🤔
Hi Dr Zzs. Many thanks for the update. I am in the UK and would like to buy the Dig-Uno and wondered where I can get them from in the UK please? many thanks. keep up the good work :)
Ive had my lights up using his method for a few years now. A buddy asked me, what do you use? I sent him the original link, then I see this one. Cool. New controllers. Is there any way to make your own light commands? Just had Halloween. Wish I could have added some green into the pattern. Nice to see the new controllers can handle more pixels per channel. Ill have to get a few of these to play with and update the 2 I have installed up on the house.
I’d like to know this as well. Seems Quindor announced they were already back in stock in his store and they would be in the Dr. Zzs store in a few days. I think that was about a week ago.

Do you have any videos that explain what can be done with this, and how to do it? ....Im really new to this stuff, and Im trying to figure out if I can control 2 sets of LED strips independently with an Uno, or if I need to buy 2 Uno's?
Drzz thanks for the video has helped me out immensely doing my own Christmas lights. I do have one question. I recently remodel a home where the previses owner had led stripes in a lot of area of the home and when i mean "a lot of area" this guy had them on the toilet. the guy loved his lights. anyways so i found and removed from the kitchen alone was about 50 strips of the 50 12v lights. my question is how can i use the same process with these stripes if they have 12vGRBW. this might be a dumb question i just would hate to toss them in the trash if we can use them again
I don't know the exact answer but the Dig's can be used to light stairs. As for the PIR there likely are other options but with Home Assistant and the Dig's you could certainly activate the Dig's with a PIR through Home Assistant.
Do you know anyone who does installs for this type of thing in the New England/Mass area? My roofline is too tall for me to get up there and install these/measure how much I need
Great video. Question about power injection and data injection. Do I need a new power wire ran from the digiquad for ever power injection needed, or one wire to tap into every power injection on my strip?
It's better to have a clean run but you certainly can piggy back but you still loose voltage tapping into an existing power injection line. Plus if you run multiple power lines right next to the data line for your lights (same conduit) you will introduce noise and your data signal will degrade quickly.
Great Channel. Thanks a Lot. What kind of powersupply do you use for an Installation on the roof with so many leds? Don't you need several hundrets of Watt?
I would leave the server enabled in case your ssid changes. My wifi crashed and I had to change the ssid. When I did that my outside wled was dead. I had to reprogram it and enable the wifi server always. Also the esp01 is the best deal at 2$ a d accepts 5v as is even though everyone else says is 3.3volt

Hello and thanks for the Videos, I’m trying to find the WS2812B in waterproof strip lights. Is 5meters the longest you can get ? I would like to buy from you if possible. If not I will just send you some money . As I really appreciate all your videos.
Dr, I'm confused... Is the ESP8266 controller now obsolete? Everything that I am seeing only refers to the ESP32 controller. I have three ESP8266 that I purchased for my Christmas LED display. It looks like the prebuild modules are the best way now. Thank you for your time.
Just stumbled upon your led knowledge here!! I’ve been wanting to do this to my house for years but I’m not sure what voltage to go with for a little over 200’, what would you suggest? 5v, 12v, 24……? I like being in control of each individual led but there will a bunch of power injection with that footage. Thinking of using strips for a permanent install so I don’t have to have any fancy brackets to hang any other lights, is that a good idea? Thanks
If you use Strips then you'll need power injection for sure. Most strips are 5v. There are some 12v but they are expensive. If you go with Strings (pixels) I'd totally recommend going with 5v. With 200 ft you might not need power injection at all.
Thanks for the update! I’m new to this hobby and have a question - how do I measure the current of one of my lines? All the multimeters I’ve found have a 10A max.
Hi there how are you doing? I am loving your videos. Any chance you can give me tips for my project. I have a small nightclub (the dancefloor is 6mtsx6mts) and I am trying to find the best configuration. I am planning on doing a total of eight BTF-LIGHTING addressable led strips (60 leds/m) (5mt each 12v) + BTF Flexible Neon Soft Lights Tube T1023 (Do you think muzata difusers work better?). So in total, it would be 40 mts of Led Strip. Since the dancefloor is a square I want to put the led strips in straight lines throughout the ceiling. What would be the best way to power them? Maybe 2 or 3 BTF-Lighting 60 Amp, 12v Power Supply ? How many Injections would you recommend? I was thinking about the ENTECCs Octo driver until I found your videos. Would you recommend a Dig-Octa or a Dig Quad for me? What would be the proper setup?

Hello drzzs: I just received 1 unit from website . I just connected to +5v supply . I see 2 leds turns on , one at main board, one at the top board . But I did not get any WLED-AP from WiFi. Please help
Always great videos! One question: The Quad: Are the four physical channels independently controllable (ie. it's like having four controller in one) or are they linked and act as just one channel?
It's still just a single microcontroller, but it's set-up so it has multiple gpio data outputs. Then the board has multiple separate Power supply channels for powering the led strips. You just need to do some tweaking within WLED to get the separate gpio pins to output different led strip settings.
Hello Dr Zzs! Thanks for your video presentations!! I'm new to the Arduino world and have a question, which may require a complex answer (not sure yet). If, for example, I have an LED strip with 20 individually addressable LED's, is it possible to assign multiple presets to a specified cluster of LED's? The context that I'm researching, has to do with separating effects based on the number of LED's on the same strip 'all functioning at the same time'; i.e. first 5 LED's slow breath effect in green, the next 5 LED's (6-10) flash yellow, the next 5 LED's (10-15) noise effect, and the last 5 LED's sunset effect. Is this possible when using a ESP32 or ESP8266?
I want to run, a preset cycle (3, -8) during the day. and preset 2 during the night. .. is there a command to start a preset cycle ? in time-controlled preset?
I have last years Dig Quads, and I need to update the firmware, so I can have multi channel outputs. We’re can I get directions on this to update OTA? Thank you.
Great updated video Doc! I do have a question if someone could help out. My dig uno isn’t showing an IP address. Just wondering how I can find it and if I added that ip address to the “static ip address” area in wled, would it show up on my phone app then? I’m not able to find the dig uno on my wled app on my phone. Can only connect on my pc. Thanks in advance everyone! lol I hope this makes sense lol
So i have a question when i set my leds to candy cane in wled one of my strands blinks yellow for a split second but it’s only on that effect any chances what it could be
Can anyone help with wire management? I want to put ws2812b on all house trims (around window, garage door, roof trim/gutters, and side trims). How would I set that up and wire it all? I would like to have the power supply and node in the garage. TIA

Hi Great videos - Im really wanting to have a go, I bought some ESP8266 units prior to seeing this video, The problem i have is my laptop makes the recognition noise when i connect the board, a quick blue flash from the led, then the led goes blank and i can't get any further? I've had a google but genuinely don't know what I'm looking for, I believe i need to install a driver on my laptop to recognise the ESP8266 is this something you might be able to help me with please ? Thanks in Advance
Are you running xlights at all. I’m having a problem and I was told they WLED and flights over wifi don’t work well. I have put a lot of time and effort into my project to get tot the finish line and now I’m sol. You know what I mean.
I run my xlights over wifi without any issue at all. I do have an AP close to each controller. I don't by the statement that xlights over wifi does not work well. I have 40 fps in xlights and have not had any issue at all and the sequences work perfectly - no lag, no sequencing skipped or missed at all. The biggest thing that is often missed is your Universes in xlights and WLED must match or bad things happen. Drzz's has an older (about a year ago or more) that he covers the basics of xlights and wled and covers the universes. Good Luck.
Привет с России. Хотелось бы посматреть, на работу маленькой платы. Плохо что про плату забыли. Плата esp-01. Почему esp-01 поддерживает 30 огней? Спасибо.
Great up date. Couple questions. Right now I use a Wyze outlet to tell my lights when to turn on and off. On the WLED timer screen you chose a preset to turn on and off at a certain time but what if your light run a cycle of presets. So can you still do that with WLED? Have a preset turn on at 6pm and instead of just putting 1 could you put in the box 1-5? Also when more esp32 boards are available will they work on last years digquad boards? And with the Ethernet port option will it only work with Ethernet or will it also work via WiFi? Thanks and keep up the hard work.
What are your thoughts on the govee rgbic leds? I know this video is for the diy but just looking at availability and price point between the diy and govee
Just did a quick look at the govee rgbic... they look like ws2811 strips. They aren't "individually" addressable. The are in groups of 3. "Tri-dressable" I don't know about their app. I doubt it's as complete as WLED. I'd say the only reason to go with govee would be ease of use. The DIY solutions are not "plug and play", but something like the govee (or other off-the-shelf brands) are.
I started off with Govee, they work well through their app and if you want to connect to Alexa, they don't work as individually addressable LEDs. I have since moved up onto individually addressable LEDs and completed my 1st install a few months ago. I am now waiting for my pixel lights, extra LED strips, and LED panels. By this time next year I want to have built my pixel tree and sequenced my lights using WLED on my node mcus' and xlights integration.
Yeah I seen the rbgic as a close second with the independent control and I know that they will not do as much as wled. Was just comparing them as far as price for a small project for starters.
@@bradgabioud3978 I've also just started. I spent well over a year investigating what to do and how to do it. 1 of my costliest mistakes was buy everything on amazon, finally looked at aliexpress and found the same lights, mcu and power unit for quater the price. Well thats what I experience in the UK.
I got myself a small tupperware, screwed the lid to the lip of the roof the over hangs my house and pocked 2 small holes for the cables. I can open and swap out my mcu by just pulling the bottom off and leave everything else behind. Unless you actually go look at every centimeter of my layout you will never find it.

You can try a clamp meter. They go up to a few hundred amps

Please help
What about the new sunrise and sunset fields?

Yes, wled has segments! And you can do what you needs
Thanks again drzzz. Let me ask you something. What if I want the lights come on and show various presets? 5 or more?
When are these going to be coming back in stock been waiting for some time now
I want to run, a preset cycle (3, -8) during the day. and preset 2 during the night. .. is there a command to start a preset cycle ? in time-controlled preset?
I have last years Dig Quads, and I need to update the firmware, so I can have multi channel outputs. We’re can I get directions on this to update OTA? Thank you.
Great updated video Doc!
I do have a question if someone could help out. My dig uno isn’t showing an IP address. Just wondering how I can find it and if I added that ip address to the “static ip address” area in wled, would it show up on my phone app then? I’m not able to find the dig uno on my wled app on my phone. Can only connect on my pc. Thanks in advance everyone!
lol I hope this makes sense lol
Wow I like your video, I don't see where to buy the bord , in your store not have
Please send me the direction link thanks 😊
When do you expect to have more controllers in stock?
So i have a question when i set my leds to candy cane in wled one of my strands blinks yellow for a split second but it’s only on that effect any chances what it could be
Can anyone help with wire management? I want to put ws2812b on all house trims (around window, garage door, roof trim/gutters, and side trims). How would I set that up and wire it all? I would like to have the power supply and node in the garage. TIA
Do those controllers work with 5ghz wifi? Or just 2.4?
Thanks DrZzs. 👍🏻
Keep missing out on the quad. It’s always sold out!
I would like to know this as well. Thanks!
bring up Drzz's story daily and watch for them to be in stock. In the last 2 weeks I grabbed 3 Quads and an Uno (3 weeks ago). You have to switch between the network connection options or you will miss when Items are in stock. Example: the onboard Wi-Fi was not in stock but the external antenna was in stock and so I grabbed them.
Been waiting for this video!!!
I'm new to this, well I've been following along for years and planned on possibly next year starting XLights for holiday shows. Does this work with XLights or is this something I can hook up for non holiday months and plug it back in after the holidays?
The controllers are xlights supported. So you could use the Diguno/Quad for general affects then come Christmas time run them with xlights.
Do the old controllers still work? These new controllers are to expensive and want the old ones.
Can these be used for a matrix?
does the uno ethernet have wifi as well?
Hi Great videos - Im really wanting to have a go, I bought some ESP8266 units prior to seeing this video, The problem i have is my laptop makes the recognition noise when i connect the board, a quick blue flash from the led, then the led goes blank and i can't get any further? I've had a google but genuinely don't know what I'm looking for, I believe i need to install a driver on my laptop to recognise the ESP8266 is this something you might be able to help me with please ? Thanks in Advance
Yes I have the same issue. Been trying to install driver w bibsuccess
If I would have went for the 30 per meter instead of 60, I prob would have been ok. But I’ll be doing some extra wiring
From where can I get the ethernet controller?
Where can I buy the digquad
doing all of this and naming my led and the name doesn't stay still sais wled any help please
thank you this was very informative.
Do the new controllers work with xlights?
Good Luck.
do u sell ready to go controller too?
So if i order the Quad with the LAN port. Does the board still have wireless plus LAN or only LAN?
Both are there. (But use one OR the other, not Both...)
What is going to make this a hit is to have them in stock. At least we can find nodemcu all day long
ya, sorry about that. Blame Covid...
@@DrZzs Or maybe an appropriate answer would be " they will be in possibly on this date" Way to turn off a potential customer.
What would you recommend to use instead of the quad. I cannot locate that to purchase right now.
For most houses an Uno will work. I have some quads (I think). You may need to use the international store if I'm still out.
You can create a Playlist of the presets you want and then just use the ID of the Playlist for the timer function to give you what your looking for.
You are amazing rock star!
Do you know anyone in the Los Angeles Area who I could pay to do this? I can buy the materials and pay separately for labor?
What are your thoughts on the govee rgbic leds? I know this video is for the diy but just looking at availability and price point between the diy and govee
Just did a quick look at the govee rgbic... they look like ws2811 strips. They aren't "individually" addressable. The are in groups of 3. "Tri-dressable"
I don't know about their app.
I'm so interested in this set up... what leds are ok to use?
There are a lot of options. Most common are the ws2811 "Pixels", or the ws2812b "strips". Just depends which look you like best.
How do you waterproof the digquad for outdoor use?
Put it in a rubber made container, drill holes for the cables. Then silicon seal the holes with the cables to block out water.
Cable glands work great
so how about an updated video and delete this one about unavailable products, maybe some business classes for store owners about ordering enough stock, I thik a noble prize winner would think about that. But thank you for this video about something I may be able to buy in the future.
out of stock
