Dibakar Banerjee had to be on this panel . Nobody , I mean nobody else can document the struggle of independent filmmaking quite like him for the past 20 years
Rima Das is so graceful, simple and honest. They way she cares about other indie filmmakers and the struggles they go through. Also a special mention for Payal, even after being into media for so long consistently she is still seems to be so grounded and real. Loved this conversation. Cinema in Hindi is indeed in a crisis but times will change, they all the beacon of hope. Next Kashyaps and Bharadwajs. ❤

I love how tonally different the conversation was when you mix Chaitanya. Everybody is a bit sad and "cautiously optimistic" but whenever it's Chaitanya's turn he will be like "yo bro this sucks". He should direct a comedy next. 😂
The way Shaunak speaks shows that he's so well read. Dropping all those metaphors cannot come so easily to a layperson. (Secretly hoping he writes a book someday). All these creators need more praise and viewership from India. Their talent is phenomenal.
And what Chaitanya says at 34:40, is too real. Indie filmmakers are told its their unique voice which matters, but just like how theatres expect a certain template of a film, the film festivals have their own biases & template, outside of which your film gets rejected. It usually costs close to 1 lakh just to send to festivals throughout the year. That amount is too costly for an indie filmmaker. Streamers also demand known faces and straight up buying indie films are few & far in between. So filmmakers have a rough deal from all directions.
They need a sustainable platform. I think the problem is absence of spotlight on their works. There's audience for all kind of films in our country. 1) Big stars need to support their production. Ex- what PCJ, Aamir Khan, Alia, RD, Deepika, Farhan etc are doing with their production houses since many years. 2) Relationship b/w Big production houses & OTT platform needs an overhaul. The former need to restart the 'small film culture' and bring in new faces. Ex- Yrf is doing this since ages, Dharma& RSVP has stopped it, Siddharth Roy Kapur films tried it but failed. (Although, Dharma has shifted its focus on supporting independent artists in form of re-using their music, songs and even actors in their blockbusters. Ex- Rangi Sari etc) 3) Government need to make these films tax free or any % benefit and give them advertising platform on govt owned channels, funding for ads for oscar race etc. Create a separate award category in NF awards. 4) Advertising is the most imp aspect. Release the trailers tied to big blockbuster movies, endorse them using an A Lister ( Aamir is great at this!) 5) The oscar committee uncles need to go. They're only trying to select movies which fit into the closed bracket of the earlier nominated Indian movies. Which is incredibly flawed. (The lunchbox, All we imag as light would h've been easily nominated) 6) Make Desi film festivals MORE accessible to the public. (I h've no knowledge of how the business of films works 😅)
I immediately watch any interview that has Rana in it. He always has a different and fresh perspective and has a solution oriented mindset. Also, this one being a Round Table that too by Anupama Chopra, cannot miss it.. loved it
Chaitanya points of being most of the indie movies to be boring is so true. While we agree indie movies are bit different from the movies that we generally celebrate, we also need to see that Film should not be boring, as simple as it sounds. And those large number of bad indie movies certainly kill the possibility of good movies to thrive. So, its our responsibility to bring up those very few good indie movies and speak for them.
What Vikram sir said about 2 percent rule and basically as viewer where to watch the film, I remember I had travelled 200km and stayed for a day at friends place to watch MASAN. Because it didn't get release where I was staying at that time.
Satyajit Ray found a way to make movies while working a full time job, with no formal cinema education, and at a time when India was dirt poor. Talent finds a way.
I agree with Rana - that we don't have movie theater which screens only independent movies (local/English/foreign). I found that in Washington DC - AFI, Landmark E Street, Bethesda Row, or Avalon theater. I used to look forward to this period from October until Oscars used to be the period when beautiful independent movies used to get released and some of them used to get nominated. I don't find even a single theater in Delhi that exclusively screens independent movies, and even in multiplexes with multiple screens, they hardly screen any independent movies. If this is the sordid state of Delhi, then I wonder how it would be at non-metropolises. It becomes challenging to find independent movies that wins Oscars as well. I'm glad that "All We Imagine As Light" is going to have a theatrical release and I'll watch it for sure.
The only smart guy in this interview was Chaitanya.🙌🏽🙌🏽 He answered all the questions truthfully based on facts. And popped Anupama's bubble that everything is okay for indie films 😂
That so called Western system really works here(Ireland). Really close knit and supportive structured system with multiple groups and a encouring government for the creative arts industry.
For those who haven't watched the film, please do watch the film 'baakki vannavar' . The film is made from heart by a bunch of people with a very low budget. The film gives hope that good films can be made irrespective of anything. 🌷🙏
Independent Cinema is to be watched independently, don't cry for mass appeal and don't cry on commercial cinemas..., you want to heard your voice, make a documentary and nowadays ott platforms are the right choice, make a feelgood movie and don't cry commercially not seen by mass audiences., I Respect both sides of the movies
Anu, try this. Just watch Upendra's few films like say "OM" and "A".And call Upendra and do a casual talk to him. You know, he is someone who might truly give a whole different perspective which might truly give some COLD SHOWER SHOCK to all these people in the panel, might even shock you as well in more thoughtful way.. I know might be weirdest request, but you will know why I'm saying this after you done with his films and get a chance to interview him, not for his new film of UI as a promotional work, but as what you're trying to discuss with this whole panel.. Infact you can ask the same questions all the panels find it hard to answer to Upendra and see what he says. . You got the questionaire now. .. Best of luck.
A recommendation on designing thumbnails. If you had to place Payal at the end of the stripe pattern, her image should have been facing inside. Not outside. The eye totally misses her because the ends are darker than the middle. God lies in graphic design details.
To add to the point Rana made about SoBo audiences who will pay to watch an art film: indians abroad would also loveee to pay to watch these movies in a theater, me included.
Can you please do a New Actress Roundtable with: Janki Bodiwala from Shaitaan Prathiba Ratna from Lapaata Ladies Sharvari from Maharaj/Munjya Medha Shankr from 12th Fail
Ok ,i give you an example of single screen situation,I come from up west district shamli it's only 100 km away from Delhi ,till 2012 there used to be 3 single screen theatres and they were packed always, now all are turned into warehouses , except one which screened film once in month ,so this is disappointing news but also scope out there to renew ,
I think when you’re trying to analyse independent films, bracketing Malayalam films in general as independent films does not help analyse how independent films can be done right. I say this because most of the films that people are referring to here are actually movies made for commercial releases, it’s just that the the budget is so much lesser than what the rest of the country is used to so it’s being put in the independent bracket. I also say this because the actual independent Malayalam movie circuit faces the same issues as discussed here and don’t get much reach in our own state.
the way a telugu movie independent movie "Pelli Choopulu" is been distributed tactically, eventually a 60L movie collected 25 CR + revenue, that's Rana and his father Suresh babu's strategy.,
There's something odd about the frame in the close up shots of the panel especially Rana and Vikramaditya. 🤔I'm looking forward to what Chaitanya is going to churn out next. Court was such delight to stumble upon and watch. And he's right, there also needs to be a conversation around the kind of stories being told. I tru;y believe a great film has more potential to "blow" than a bad one.
I am sour about the fact that Jigra team did not dare to release the movie on Diwali week. They literally chickened out because of star cast loaded Singham and Bhulbhulayia and did not take the risk. Sometimes its about timing and courage. Its known fact that in Diwali people usually go to theatres with family. Those other trashy movies were hit because of the timing, nothing else
Chaitanya has next level sarcastic humor. He should write a slice of life comedy. Blasphemous to suggest perhaps. He might do really well given his natural talent.
I dont understand why there isnt a system on any platform where i just rent any film and watch it... amazon or youtube does that for many foreign film or for limited indian films but that should apply to every film made.. if i am intrested i pay and watch.. there is infrastructure short for commercial films only , forget about indie films.. ott is the only solution..
53:08 - My controversial opinion is that All we imagine as light was "boring as hell" as Chaitanya said. It was too slow paced.. It starts well and the way it shows Mumbai in rain is unique but I didnt feel for any of the characters in the movie. Its an OK movie, not something that win awards or accolades... Laapata Ladies was way better than that and tbh, when I saw All we imagine at the same festival where I saw Joyland, I kept comparing the two and All we imagine as light doesnt even come close to it. I love this conversation though.
The dangerous thing about using 'boring' as serious critique, is that 'boring' is a highly subjective term. A majority of audiences would find "The Disciple" boring too. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion and to find any film boring. It's just that it's not an 'objective' opnion.
To add to this, He also supports smaller Telugu films ( sort of indie films) like c/o kancherapalem + he has a distribution muscle through Suresh productions
I want to invest in Indian indie movies but there are no avenues to connect me to the filmmakers. In the UK there is a EIS - Enterprise Investment Schemes through which filmmakers get quasi retail investors to invest in equity and investors get amazing tax breaks.
For normal audience the defination of film is just entertainment. If that entertains they will watch ..u just need to convey how will ur Film gonna be by Promotion, even if its independent or commercial film.
Rima Das and Payal Kapadia the Indie Girlies STAY WINNING ❤
Rana and Shaunak speak their minds so effortlessly, it always feels so warm to listen them!!
Love rana ❤😊and his acting from his first film leader itself😊
Dibakar Banerjee had to be on this panel . Nobody , I mean nobody else can document the struggle of independent filmmaking quite like him for the past 20 years
But given that he’s a disgusting person, I’m glad he wasn’t given a platform.
I'm from tirupati, please release all we imagine as light in one theater for atleast one day....
Shaunak Sen is so articulate with his thoughts, it's a joy to listen to him ✨ 20:44

So wonderful seeing Anupama Chopra back in action even if it isnt an FC roundtable.
Great. Please do organise a roundtable for eminent Indian Screenwriters too. It's bizarre that it hasn't happened already.
Oh imagine Javed Akhtar and Vijayendra Prasad sitting together 🔥🔥
Great People on the table ❤❤❤More Power to Independent Artists
This was really good insightful discussion and start itself to do something in this space. I have already started thinking what can be done
