Adorable. If it tries to attack you, pick it up and pet it while patronizing its small stature. It'll just grow angrier and will try to kill you in your sleep!
Every lemming I've ever seen have run away immediately, and they were that kind of lemming. One time when I was fishing near a dam, one swam across the river, right in front of the dam. It got to the other side safely, which is probably unlike what would've happened to me had I tried the same thing.
This is the general idea. If the lemming had tried to run away the cat would most likely have jumped it, but by acting aggressive it confused the cat by not acting like other prey.
I know that warning coloration is common in insects, arachnids, amphibians, fish, and even reptiles. I also remember that being used by mammals like skunks and their cousins. But I had nooooooooo idea that a rodent like a Norwegian lemming would use it's fur as warning coloration to signal that it has a nasty stench or poison. I though this species would only use it for camouflage.
I got to know lemmings exist in real life after watching this video. I never heard of lemmings before the animated cartoon series of Grizzy and the lemmings.
I love how the cat wasn’t even going after it, just minding its own business and then this striped ball of fur goes crazy at it and the cat’s just kinda like “what… what is this? What does it want? Why is it trying to fight?” and just kinda casually walks away from it
Right, because stoats, weasels and ferrets are all renowned for their docile, easygoing nature ;) Its interesting that the Tassie Devil is often trotted out as our most ferocious mammal here in Australia (despite their health issues) but the animal I've always thought of as best able to defend itself against cats and even dogs (which admittedly cant climb trees !) is the common brushtail possum. Any wild animal that still exists in such healthy numbers in Australia in 2018 clearly knows how to defend itself - sadly, that doesnt extend to smaller animals like the Bilby.
@@tonyjonesbassoonwhippet2271 I'm guessing that I edited my post but of course you are correct - they prey on rodents and pretty much anything else they can get their teeth into. I stand by what I said re temperament and our marsupials.
I have two 80 lb. Pitbulls, one of whom was a fighter who live in fear of My Guinea Pig Countess Chocula. I have 6 other pigs who are regular timid little things. And then there's the Countess. Ive never seen a piggy act like her.
So rodents got themselves vikings? Cat: "Why is that black and yellow rodent coming over here? Did somebody order lunch? Wait a minute, oh c***, it's attacking what the heck get off me. What's going on?" Lemming: Inside the living's head. (The song Valhalla rising.) Lemon squeak translations. "Gonna use your feline bones to build my hole. Gonna wear your fur to the afterlife."
That cat must have lost its natural instinct by being fed gourmet meals in the house all its life. The cat has bright colors too and claws as big as that lemmings teeth.
It is different in cats. These lemmings can fight off humans, so this cat had the right to be afraid of it. This cat is very well fed and knows does not need to hunt. If this cat was hungry it would have killed the lemming. One cat was beaten badly by a rat before.
That is simply not a mean cat, the cat has an agility, bite power, size, reach, and speed advantage. If it pissed the cat off enough or it was a wild cat, that lemming would be hurt or dead. Cats have been known to chase off bears and large dogs from dangerous breeds (in a more aggressive fashion with actual attacks). Brave little guy, no doubt though and the cat was like, "What is he trying to do to me?"
You don't have to imagine. In Norway when summer comes early they breed like crazy and you can come across a bunch of them at the same time in the mountains.
Just goes to show...when you’re small..and fearless...it’s easy to intimidate the large foe...but the reality is...that thing isn’t scary at all..it’s respectable...the cat probably thinks it’s also a predator 😂
WAIT WHAT??? Strong, Powerful Lemming.... Viking Lemming lol.... Oh my god they are cute little attack lumps. Y'all, I didnt even know what a lemming is until today. I thought it was like, not a real animal or smthn. Like, just a funny word for gerbil. I thought lemming was like a jackalope ffs and now i am finding out theres freaking norwegian attack lemmings
Berskerkers were a branch within in the Norse "Military" known now as Vikings. The Berserkers were the most Insane, because they were actually Insane people. They were used because they were fearless, it is said that they were fed drugs to make them go into a violent frenzy/psychosis.
every trail is littered with their corpses, it is said that they get so angry they go into a cardiac arrest, they are super cute tho even tho they are angry
I like to say that lemmings are 99% bravery and 1% intelligence
It's intelligence too, they make use of their body colour to scare off predators
Ratio like that gets you killed lol.
Not true at all their fierceness indicates intelligence
They got heart. You have to give them credit for that. Lol.
The fact they are not extinct meaning they are doing something right
Ah, the ever aggressive honey badger now in convenient pocket size!
1/10 of the size but twice the smoke all in one adorable package.
God damn it, you just won the comment war. Take my like.
Scandinavian warrior hamster!

HAHA fuck yes!!!!!!! norway btw me
my brother did me proud... How brave he is attacking a cat like that
aposematism is also visible on feminists - bright hair, colored frames of glasses, bright lipstick, etc.

I have had lemmings trying to fight me several times. It is hilarious. Most fun part of hunting grouse in the mountains of Sweden :D
Until one bites.
Then it's blam time.
Nighthawke70 I throw a couple of snowballs at them. Not that it helps, just because it is fun.
Hilarious? Dude, that would scare the shit out of me. Lemmings don't fuck around.

A little Viking 😄.
adorable great grey owl.
I think it does it for self preservation, most predators want a easy meal so just it showing it will fight is enough to dissuade predators.
