The focus on sustainability and pure customization is really cool to see. I hope this video gives you some insight as to what we can expect to see from framework and the companies that collab with them for this new 16" laptop.
Thanks for watching!

4:07 I mentioned AIB collaboration (Add in Board). Typically this term is reserved for GPU nomenclature but I think it's relevant in this situation as a lot of aftermarket manufacturers will be making AIB type additions to framework. What do you think... does that terminology fit here?
Also coincidentally LTT uploaded a vid today touring the framework assembly line, i'll link that in the vid description.
I am voting with my wallet. I pre ordered a diy version with several customization options. I fully support this concept.
Awesome! Preordered mine recently too, going to make a follow up video soon. Which specs did you go with?
Individual standard consumers may not be interested in it but laptop distributors would prolly *love* selling and repairing the framework because it means they don't need special training to repair it and they could sell more smaller components to more consumers
True, if they end up landing a deal with best buy or micro center it would be huge!
I'd definitely love to see framework laptops and definitely the parts at my local microcenter would make things very convenient and I like going there for stuff when I can
@Beck-tr7dd likewise, I go there like once a week... im pretty lucky its a 10 min drive from me!
For me, the selling point is really the upgradeability. And make it cheaper.
We don't know what the 16 will cost yet but it'll surely be more than the 13
It’s a laptop aimed at desktops users. AKA people who like to build, tinker with, and upgrade computers.
Certainly is
I do agree that the third-party support for the input-deck and ideally other upgrade slots is important for this product. The potential is thrilling though! I hope it goes well! We need more openness, repairability, and modularity in tech. Badly.
Agreed, the whole industry shifted one way when I don't think in reality anyone really had a say. Framework could fix that
It doesn't have t be far removed from your family. If they are not excited about Framework they are probably not excited about laptops in general, they just want a fast machine that works. What excites me for Framework related to my family is that I am usually tech support and being able to maintain and increase the lifespan of these machines with all the available parts etc. Framework is awesome for everyone!
Very good point
I think it would be awesome so have a digital art tablet for the keyboard space weather it’s got a built in screen or not
Agreed, i'm sure they will launch a second screen option soon!
that goes so hard
If it can support touchscreens and a stylus, I could see this have a bunch of secure opportunities in the long run. Quickly changing between a media center for on the go and a powerhouse for when I'm at home like proprietary docks with many ports tend to provide changes up it's longetivity, but requires practice.
They should make a desktop style dock for when you have it on a desk...for the expansion bay
Would be cool if they had a modular egpu
For me, it's not just about upgradeability, but also about being able to easily replace really basic things like the keyboard, the battery, or the speakers, if they break. My currrent laptop has trouble booting up, and I'm pretty sure it's just the MOS battery getting old, but that battery is buried really deep inside the machine and a pain to replace.
That makes total sense...annoying about the batt, I think it gives you more of a feeling of ownership too. Like I can literally keep this thing as long as I can but also just customize it for myself today and also down the line as new things come out. So cool. Which framework model would you consider?
The fact that it's upgradeable is very alluring to my family because we hate planned obsolescence. Growing up poor does things to people/lh
So i think if they really honed in on the fact that it's easy to change things in the marketing, even the internal parts and that it'll save money in the long run, then it'd appeal to the mainstream audience a lot
Most families have at least one tinkerer/tech support anyway lol
Ur right diamond, mainstream appeal will come imo when people see the long term value add. The thing about growing up poor is you really appreciate the things you own and take care of them/fix them when you can 👐
@@VladimirKostek 100% 🤝🤝
I hate planned obsolesence even if I can easily afford to replace something.
@@Tom_Quixote agreed, just unnecessary
Agreed, it's just the way the market went and manufacturs etc.@@Tom_Quixote
The thing that sold me is the reparability, I like knowing that every piece is reparable by me. My second laptop's hinge broke after only a year of light use and not only did I have to send it in, but they wanted my password for the device. It took almost 2 weeks to get it back. Worst part was this was during a semester of colage. Framework gives me more control over MY device and MY data. And I thank them for that.
My 13 inch is nearing its 6 month mark, running Linux and has been awesome!
Very cool, thanks for sharing. Couldn't agree more. If you don't mind me asking what version of Linux do you use with the 13?
love the big l vinyl in the back
"Put em up!" Probably the second rap album I ever heard. My friend gave me that disc 🙂
Truly excellent video, not too long, perfectly structured, full of info.
I'm glad you liked it! How would you be using a framework 16 if you were to get one?
I wish a lot of these ideas to become reality, it would make me ditch my desktop, imagine that, the versatility of a desktop rivaled by a laptop, I'm very impressed!
Agreed, still love building pcs but this will make a solid case for ditching one! I pre-ordered mine a few weeks back 😊
I feel like it would have been better to support a special conector like oculink for an external GPU, that gives you more options at full performance using the same 13 inch laptop when you don't need the extra power
True, but oculink is more proprietary than TB3 or TB4 so I think one of those would be better. They didn't speculate in the press release the connector type so definitely TBD. But they do say it will be PCIe x8 so that provides a lot of bandwidth. Will be curious to see what it actually is
@VladimirKostek I mean if you can actually just have an empty case and have like a pcie connection to the exterior that would be sick too, because that means you could use your dedicated graphics of the notebook when you want and even plug it out and just plug an egpu to that pcie if maybe they take too much time releasing new gpus or you need some extra juice
@pali122 absolutely, they did hint at an egpu só I'm wondering if it will be a regular style enclosure or if it will be a proprietary type dock that could interface with the expansion bay too
It looks pretty neat, I'm itching for pre-orders to eventually open up!
Same!
Did you pre-order one?
I'm waiting for Framework 16 to come out, then I'm getting it. I've had my Dell laptop for nearly 5 years or more, and the battery which used to last 3 hours won't last an hour and a half. It's more or less an acting desktop now. I really miss the idea of when the laptop battery goes bad. Simply change it like we do in our TV remote.
Very true or like when phones had batteries you could swap out! I'm glad your Dell lasted so long but that is frustrating about the 🔋 life
I also have a Dell laptop 6 years old, and yes, the battery used to last 3 hours, but now also an hour and a half or less, and I also use it as a desktop now. Dell doesn't sell a spare anymore.
Taking out the gpu and putting a extra battery when I go to uni and putting it back in at home is HUGE.
Having 2 rows of macro keys will also be huge.
Absolutely man, imagine being able to have double the battery life, numpad on whichever side you want, and a specific pad on either side of the bottom for whatever app you'll be using at Uni. That's why it's a game changer :) and that's not even touching on the ports. Then at home have a dockable gpu of some sort hooked up to an external monitors/speakers or what not.
While I do agree, I think this Is somewhat not practical, remember you gotta disassemble the laptop a little bit while it's completely off to change these modules
@AnityEx I'll be making another video soon talking about some of this stuff but from what I've seen it's quite speedy to swap parts
@@AnityEx It's just taking off the keyboard (super easy to do) and 2 screws holding the PCIe connector to the main motherboard. I already do something similar with my current Dell G7, I take out the battery when I'm at home running AC power to preserve battery health, and put it in when I take it to uni, so I don't think it'll be much of an issue for me.
Agreed, i saw that video. At first I was a bit dissapointed about the screws I thought it was gonna be hot swappable but the more I think about it they made the right decision you wouldn't want the gpu dislodged accidentally while it's on 😂
I’ll be getting the Framework 16 for sure. Side note, that Big L vinyl in the back 🔥
Such a good record! Nice what do you plan on using yours mostly for?
@@VladimirKostek Gaming here and there when I get the chance, video editing, and some coding here and there
@@gsharpshooter80 Nice, it'll be solid for all that for sure!
the 16 looks cool as fuck
Fr, you getting one? I'll be doing another framework vid soon
First time view here! Excellent content my friend 👏🏻 looking forward to hearing more about Framework!
More to come for sure! Thanks for watching, what excites you most about the company?
I'd love your vision of a music production laptop. I hope this laptop catches on with third party manufacturers. I've always loved older think books for their repairability but even they are disposable.
True, thinkbooks are great... but what framework is doing here is really special because of the customization like you mentioned!
CEO said someone is working on a midi keyboard!
so keen. i will be getting one but ill wait till round 2 roll out
Let the iron the "kinks" out. I don't blame ya!
Why isn't the eco obsessed media all over this company? The battery and speakers in my 2015 MBP have been such a pain to replace.
We're you able to get it done? It is quite tricky on those
Great vid. Thank you.
If only the fan noise wasn't an issue (audio production) then I would be all in.
My finger is hovering over the 'buy now' button for a M3 but the storage & memory upgrades are extortionate.
It will be interesting to test fan noise btwn the dgpu and igpu with normal expansion port fans when I get mine!
wow you have awesome ideas! i am in a trance!
as long as these modules are profitable for these third party this stuff should happen
I'll be honest I don't think they will be that profitable from the get-go. Every 3rd party manufacturer has to be willing to bet on FW but long term I think they will be happy they made that decision
I'm waiting for how much community support will keep it up. Also third party support. I like the raspberry pi eco system with all the hats and modules. Hope more or less third party module to be manufactured.
Agreed, time will tell what the aftermarket community will bring but I'm hopeful we'll get some good options...we've already seen solid companies make announcements or release products. I'd love to see El Gato, Logitech or Dolby make some products for them. How about you?
@@VladimirKostek i would like to see some audio solutions made. Laptop audio is generally bad(excluding Mac) and a speaker up grade, or DAC would be welcomed. But the most im Looking forward to is how they expend on the way upgrade is handled. Right now it's over USB controller chip via type c. But if they can develop or use a PCIE external slot, like oculink i guess?. (As in those old laptop used to have. ) it would expend the horizen for upgrade option
I disagree. Everyone I know hates how parts of the laptop can't be replaced/upgraded. My current laptop, Ive broken the casing holding the right lower part of the screen. Almost no options. Framework? 5-10 mins fix. If that.
However, its also true...almost everyone I know uses Apple phones and comps. Very annoying.
What is your current laptop?
@@VladimirKostek Lenovo 15.6, i3,1080p. Already had it appraised. Not worth fixing vs value of this laptop. Waiting to get a Framework. Disposable laptops like mine should be banned. EU recently banned cell phones that are glued together not allowing batt replacement.
@@madmax7622 Yea damn sorry to hear that, the idea of owning 1 laptop for the rest of my life would actually be really exciting haha
I really want a new laptop and I am waiting for framework 16. I need a dedicated graphics card to do my work which 16 will have. It will also bee cool if they release new APU boards and I would love to check them out as a developer.
It would be pretty cool to have APUs, if they go the ryzen route that will definitely be the case... would be nice because then you could have a slightly more portable/lighter and quieter laptop for travel when you don't need all that power.
You really should do a video about your backpacks 👀
Also nice video, i just watched yours after linus video about Framework assembly line
That came up on my recommended too about to watch! Appreciate it man, perhaps I will at some point :) Do you have a framework already or are you looking to get one?
@@VladimirKostek I'm actually looking for the one with AMD board, AMD Cpus are efficient and with some battery mods it will be amazing.
I'm always looking for my next laptop, especially gaming one, now I'm imaging a personal laptop that you can install Gpu on it with some cooling mods while you are home, or removing the mods for something productive while you on the go? It's actually neat if Framework goes that way
@@Crosyph Yea that is certainly a very real possibility! The 13 inch version with the AMD Ryzen chip is going to be awesome! It is much more efficient than intel so with the bigger battery upgrade I think it will have stellar battery life when it launches. The 780M iGPU inside too is looking quite strong for internal graphics from what i've seen so far too!
Any thoughts on Dave 2D latest video about Framework?
@@Crosyph Yessir! I'm planning on putting out another framework vid in the next week or so, stay tuned!
I stopped being a power user a long time ago; the main feature that attracts my attention is the keyboard customization; I don't use the numerical key portion of the keyboard. My main reason for using a PC laptop (my main computer is a 2017 13-inch Macbook Pro) is to run Linux for my Master's writing; I use LibreOffice for that. I currently own a Gateway 15.6 for that, but I'm not too fond of the keyboard layout with the numerical pad. Good video; stay safe.
Hey Luis, thanks for sharing. Do you mean you don't like the top row of num keys or a dedicated numpad to the right?
@@VladimirKostek The dedicated keypad on the right, my friend. I understand some need it to crunch numbers, but I don't.
@@luisbperez368 Gotcha, your comment just made me think... if you have the numpad on the right why would you need the top row of numbers. More room for other things haha, that's why the customization is so cool!
I really want to know the performance of it against gaming laptops and if it comes close I would rather buy this laptop since it looks so classic + modern and I can upgrade it.
Agreed, I have faith that it will fall in line btwn the mid to high tier gaming laptop segment. My guess would be a 4050 or 4060 for mid range graphics and maybe up to a 4070Ti or 4080 on the high end. what do you think?
@@VladimirKostek In the video we can see the heat pipes I would say a 4060 or 4070 is what they will use and not very high wattage. But we will see.
@@AvoidVanity Yea could definitely see that being the case, my guess is from the getgo they will try to create something that is a "good" option for gaming probably not something enthusiast grade. Then again tho there is nothing to stop Asus or Gigabyte for example from making there own modules.
I am a teen, and have been saving up all the money from my job since the announcement to buy a framework 16 as my first personal pc. I am stoked to be able to put the numpad on the left hand side of the keyboard, as one large use case for pcs for me is 3d modeling, and I use my mouse in my right hand. It gets annoying having to take my hand off my mouse, put it onto the numpad, and back to the mouse again. Also the entry price can be cheaper for me when I buy a base model, and add in a Dgpu later. Thanks for the vid man.
@3DKreateFPV smart of you to get into it early, you will be able to keep the 16 going for a long time... and that's cool, imagine what other cool 3d modeling switches and dials you could add in the future too! If you don't get a dgpu right away you should opt for a ryzen model if they have it since the igpu is way better vs intel
I preordered a 16 myself, music production and a little gaming. All it says is Q2, no more specifics, but I'm looking forward to it. Side note: I liked the Roli Lumi you mentioned, I looked it up, and now that's on my list, too. You went and upsold me, how dare you 😅
Very cool! What configuration did you go with? Oh man, the roli lumi is super cool, I'll be honest it's gotten very little use because I have too many gadgets but that's on my list of devices to really get me into piano this year, I might even do a series on it. My only regret is they came out with an updated version and I have the older one haha. Apologies for upsetting you lol 😆
I originally got the go framework, intel 11th gen. I’m upgrading to the highest end model of ryzen 7000 series with separately bought 32gb ddr5 5600mzh and a 2tb 990pro nvme ssd for under $200 total. Then I just get wi-fi 6E from $20 replacement part to finish the college upgrade.
That's so cool, i'm actually about to preorder my framework 16 today (will make another video on it soon). If i didnt already have a thin and light the 13 with ryzen would be my ideal choice. Nice specs ur choosing there too. With the high mhz DDR RAM the 780M iGPU will really fly too. Not bad for on the go gaming or creative work at college!
@@VladimirKostek Glad to hear you are putting in your preorder today🎉. I got mine in on batch 4, r9 processor, no dgpu, and can't wait for it to ship in late q4. Having it be a preorder is the best thing ever for me because I am a HS student, and I am saving up the rest of the money needed to pay framework when my laptop config ships in q4.
No gpu is the right move, the igpu is quite strong and down the line you could just get a used gpu. Good luck saving!
I really hope they come up with mini pc with the form factor of the khadas mind
Have you seen the cooler master case they make for the 13"?
Im really dumb i didnt even realize you can put midi keyboards on it awesome
Very cool huh?
"Support with your wallet." Simple as that really.
Lots of well wishes, but if you _really_ want them to succeed, _make them succeed_ and frikkin buy one.
I paced back n forth for a few weeks before going "Who am I kidding? I know I'm getting one, waiting is stupid" and pulled the trigger on my FW 16 pre order.
Had to repeatedly remind myself that my order doesn't have to be perfect bcz it's MODULAR 😄
I did a video a few months back where I talk about my pre-order. Specifically, I talk about where you can save money and what not since it is modular like you mentioned. It's really a brilliant model, don't have enough money for a gpu, no problem use the integrated graphics for now and buy a used gpu in a year when the second hand ones are cheaper! I'm going to do a livestream in the next week talking about production updates if you are interested 🤙
@@VladimirKostek - Good yeah.. in general I'd like to see more tubers post about the 16; most videos on it are pretty old for some reason. Would also like to know what people are working for the FW Marketplace. This is going blow up so hard dude.
My wicked 16 ships Q2 ... I'm just worried the wait will kill me before I have a chance to enjoy it 😰 Being a part of this industry disruption and the community is going to be sooo fun. And watching panicked CEOs scrambling to play catch-up so they don't get left behind is going to be _especially_ delicious! The old ways are OVER dipshits, sorry not sorry 😅

Thanks for watching!
I think If possibilities are endless then prices will be even higher...
I think Framework components are really expensive compared to their non switchable competition
That is true it is more expensive, I just watched Linus' video about the framework assembly and it's encouraging to see they can scale things up which in turn will reduce individual unit prices IMO.
@@VladimirKostek Yeah that would be very cool...it could also be a big hit for school too
@@JoeGillian0 Absolutely Joe, the reusability within a school system is certainly something they should try to latch onto. Reusable parts and upgradability would make things cheaper in the long term!
Although I'm hyped about the product, I remain skeptical of the company. I'm having a hard time that this company can actually sustain itself in the market, especially in this high interest rate environment. I wouldn't be surprised if the company is burning cash with negative contribution margin from each unit sale. I desperately hope I'm wrong
The laptops aren't exactly cheap compared to similarly specced laptops from other companies like Dell, HP or Lenovo, it is done under mass production and it does save up on labour for those who purchase their DIY edition (most likely the majority of their customers would be swayed in that direction).
I would recommend you both watch Linus' new video he coincidentally posted yesterday about the framework assembly line. It was interesting to see that the DIY version actually is more labor intensive but they still charge less for it. The scalability they are building seems solid. I would really like to see them still sell parts that don't meet visual QA at a small discount. The video is linked in my description fyi
@@VladimirKostekthe diy is actally more expensive but you get the option to bring your own ram storage and os
@@enkvadrat_ True, so it ends up being cheaper considering the cost saving of those components
Your video is good, I had to speed it up to 1.25-1.5x, so the speaking speed was normal. That's the only thing to point out, good job otherwise.
Appreciate the feedback! I noticed that too when i was editing, it was my first time using a teleprompter so that certainly effected the speed haha. Thanks for the tip. Are you considering getting a framework?
@@VladimirKostek Yeah, i do, if i ever get enough free money to buy one that's the only laptop i would buy, and for university mechatronics i think it will be extremely handy.
Just for the sake of thinkering with it and supporting that company is enough reason already, it's so awesome, i would wait for the 16" one just because so many new awesome capabilities.
@Splarkszter Yea it would be useful for mechatronics for sure with the expansion bay, so many possibilities!
Speaking speed seemed perfectly normal to me.
@@SplarkszterEyyy I’m doing mechatronics too, down in South Africa. Sadly I just couldn’t wait as my laptop was stolen and needed a new one semi urgently. Couldn’t risk the laptop coming late so got an Asus zephyrus G16.
Framework's fan noise still so noisy.. that is most big issue

@VladimirKostek what specs did U end up going with? Also I'm stoked to an unimaginable level for mine
@3DKreateFPV fr right!? Long wait but super worth it. I went with the DIY edition, Ryzen 7 (gonna upgrade it in a year or two) numpad, rgb macropad, 2tb, 32gb ram, 6 expansion ports since I don't have any and dgpu and non dgpu bays. I'm gonna put out another framework vid in a couple of weeks and I might include my pre-order details in it. Some people don't realize they are not the ones.
Facts 🙌
You would spend the whole weekend disassembling and reassempling the laptop and you would miss youre vodeo publish window the you would have to wait till the next publish window.
It's actually quite quick, i saw a video where someone swapped out the GPU in under 2 mins, so I think
6:03 Apple user here, gess I'm in a even smaller niche 😶
11:20 I'm probably not getting one, and not just because I'm an Apple user, but because they don't sell Frameworks in my country, and there's no one re-selling them here either, also the import tax is unresonably high. Outside that, the other problem is what O.S would I use, for me Windows for anything outside gaming(and work, cause they pay me for it) is a big no, and I've had a lot of problems with Linux window managers when I used it, and I do not want to go back to that.
But it's an very interesting laptop, if Apple ever fucks up with their privacy thing, I'll go back to Linux praying the interfaces will be better, and them I'll probably look into getting a Framework if they're easier to get in my country by them.
If you are in the apple ecosystem and like the OS it probably makes sense to stay with macbooks then!
I've heard the frameworks are very linux friendly too
@@VladimirKostek Yeah, I've heard that too, but my problem was very specific to using "fractional scaling" in Wayland on HiDPI monitors, and how you still need to run stuf in XORG/X11(never know what's the right one) inside this Wayland evironment which just breaks a lot of apps completely
@Gabriel-lu3zf I've never used Wayland but makes sense easier to stick with something that doesn't break it entirely 🤣
Sadly no option for better screen
yeah i want oled 100% SRGB and 244hz refresh rate monitor and touchscreen for framework
Will be exciting to see what they come out with in the next year for screens!
