To test ... Look at plug. Red=switched 12v, Black=Ground, Pink or Yellow=ECM 12v On Signal (Depending on year) So just hook up accordingly with ECM & Glowplugs DISCONNECTED!!! and you should hear it click. If you put a test light on the copper lug WITHOUT 12v it should light when it clicks.. BTW I have fuses in all my test leads just in case..
ALSO if you are not getting the Glowplug light and the Service Engine Soon Light at the same time the ECM Ground is corroded or disconnected... This will also cause random stalling.. It is a 16GA. Black w/White Stripe wire in harness at Firewall behind filter and usually connects to Intake Bolt on Pass Rear of Block... If your Engine has any kind of corrosion I would Redo ALL of the Grounds with Sandpaper, Dielectric Grease and Never seize.
So i have this same problem but my glow plugs turn on when the engine is cold... Once it gets hot my glow plugs dont turn on and it wont start.... Plz anything would help
Jason moreno . So what could be happening is your glow plug temp sensor which is located on the opposite side of the block could be faulty causing your glow plugs not to come on to start the engine what you can do to solve this problem is convert it to a manual glow plug controller and basically what that will do is you have control of the glow plugs by pressing a button which you will install inside the cab. So unplug the temp sensor on the opposite side of the block and see if your glow plug light will come on after it's warm and if so that means you're sensor is bad and I would just convert it to a manual controller and that should solve your problem
hi, any idea how to test the old controller before I buy a new one? or how to test the glow plug system methodically? if the controller is found faulty, are there any more reliable brands (maybe not the GM one...). am not sure exactly how to do a manual conversion on a switch.T.A.
there are two points on the controller one is where the power cable comes from the battery the second part of the terminal is where controls the glow plugs what you want to do is take your test light put it on the post where it controls the glow plugs have someone turn on the key if you have power at that post the means the controller is good if you don't have power at that post that means the controller is bad
when you say controller do you mean the part behind the air cleaner that the fusible links plug into ? because on my solinoid when i use the test light where the battery hooks up i get power but on the other side that is connected to the fusible links i get no power with ignition on or off and also i get now power in the 2 wire clip …but when i jump the battery side to the other side with the fusible links i don’t get the thud but i get the glow plug light and it starts right up..? could that be a bad solinoid…oh and one more thing when i put 12 volts on the pink wire that’s in the clip i get the thud but i get no glow plug dummy light and the truck won’t start…this is when it’s hot …usually i turn the key to on position i get a cpl thuds and the glow dummy light flashes and it fires right up…i hope i explained this correctly
Ok..so what you're saying is that the light stays on. 1st: unplug the controller on the Block and see if the light goes out if it doesn't go out you have a open circuit somewhere if it does go out and you know the problems at the glow plug controller

you don't need a controller from GM any basic controller will work just make sure you have the right pin connector for some are 3 pin some are 4 pin

Mine light won’t go off so now I’m confused.. I have an 86 CUCV and the light doesn’t work like your at all

al bundy I have to get a whole new relay now because mine went out I’ll let you know tomorrow, do I unplug the controller when it’s running or no?
@@12gageracing56 no need to unplug the controller when its running the controllers only job is to heat up the glow plugs for starting.
Forgot to mention that you should check your temperature sensor
Make sure that the wires are good
