His speech in this 2003 anime is heartwarming and reasonable. That proves why I believe Mustang 2003 is best with a major reason on being Fuher so badly.
As time goes on, i begin to realize that the 2003 version is probably better than brotherhood. The character arcs run really deep and hit home. Mustang is the perfect example. While his arc in brotherhood was great as he tried to deal with loss and revenge, his story in the original was so different and tragic. His trauma in ishbal cut him so deep and we see glimpses of it throughout the show. He almost kills himself, almost does human transmutation, had PTSD and froze in front of Ed, and is now trying to guide Ed as his father figure. It is a story of a man trying to carry on and cope with his sins, and doing his best to be better. And it is really poetic how Hughes impacted him to do better and stay on his path. And it all culminated in Mustang giving up everything to ensure that his country's leader does not continue to get away with his transgressions. It felt so real. So human. I get lost for words watching it.
03 is more "realistic" in tone than Brotherhood I think. Brotherhood is a straight up shonen done to near perfection, but 03 is more of a psychological character study. It's not about the events as much as it is about the characters. It feels like a show truly with an adult message. Like the conversation Ed and his dad have in the last episode. The world isn't perfect and you don't always gain or lose in what seems like an equal exchange. But maybe what Ed lost to bring Al back wasn't material, it was the growing and experiences they'd had. And in the end, weren't those experiences worth more than any material value? I swear it's the most mature show I've ever watched. Also the way the homunculi were used in 03 was absolutely beautiful compared to brotherhood. That they were created through people's failed human transmutations, the very essence of the brother's journey tied into the villains so well. And the villains were all characterized super well too. By the end of the show I felt awful for Lust, Wrath, and Gluttony. Particularly Lusy, she seemed to be the one struggling the most with her want to be human. Not realizing that really, on the inside emotionally, she's been human the whole time.
I like him in both versions but personally I prefer the 2003 version. He may have been more of an asshole in that adaption but let's face it, for the 2003 Ed the 2009 Mustang would have been too lax and helping. I like the 2003 Mustang better because he is more strict and demanding as well as has the guts to even plan a whole coup just because he really lives to protect the citizens of Amestris. There's also one thing about him. The 2003 Mustang never acted on pure revenge because of Hughes' death... Instead of revenge he continued to look after Ed and Al the best way he could as if trying to fill the hole Hughes left behind. As opposed to the 2009 version who literally hunts down Envy, forcing Hawkeye to point her gun at him with true intentions to shoot him according to their promise... (Riza is supposed to shoot him if he ever strays from the path he had chosen for the worst if I remember right) All because of revenge...because he couldn't contain his anger and grief. Though I do aknowledge that this makes him the more realistic but I believe realism is not the main point of this particular anime. So yeah, 2003 for the win but the 2009 is close second. :)
