    I think that some of these older methods of drawing plane figures are just so clever and it is a shame that as computer spreadsheets and CAD models become more sophisticated that these methods are in danger of being lost . There is something so satisfying about being able to do something without having to resort to complex computing . Bravo !
    As a point of information the edge of the paper which is being used to generate the points is at right angles to the tangential line on the perimeter of the ellipse ( I only just realised that so I'm learning more about the subject ).

      Thank you for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Computer programs employ these and other plotting techniques for shapes and solids that are techniques that have been used for half a millennium and even longer in some cases. The computer just does it faster. These techniques help when drawing something by hand and not on the computer. It's fun to share a little bit of history.

    The method does work for an ellipse of any size. You just have to make sure you don't reverse the order of "A","B", and "C" in terms of the measurements.

    • @rockdog2584

      I labelled my points as 'Major Axis', 'minor Axis', and 'Center Point' (MA, mA, and CP, respectively). That kept me from goofing up. I just flipped the strip of paper over and made a 'mirror image' on the other side (for the left and right sides of each ellipse).
      I gotta tuck this thought into my woodworking/metalworking 'reference' notebook!

    I have a question as I am new to this ellipse working. If you are actually drawing from real life I assume you measure the width of the circle ( jar lid) to form the Major line. How do you measure the vertical line for the minor to get the true ellipse of the jar lid? Also, depending on what angle you are viewing the lid is this a different formula??
    Thanking you in tense anticipation.

    • @KevinMcCainStudios
      @KevinMcCainStudios  4 місяці тому

      You could measure the minor axial length and dividends into the major axial length to get a basic proportion. Truth be told many artists eyeball the basic ellipse draw and then if needed work to tightened it up with the major and minor axis if needed. Then, if they need to go to, they will use this method to correct any ellipse issues.

    Why did that Bonnie Tyler song appear in my brain? Eclipse and ellipse sound much alike i guess was the reason. I never really liked the track " Total Eclipse Of The Heart" but now when I think about it, Eclipse (as with ellipse) are wonderful words, seeming to encapsulate what they are defining perfectly. And for a bonus, I will from now on, having learned this method of producing a perfect ellipse, always think of this every time I ever hear Bonnie shredding her larynx.
    🎵🎶 Once upon a time I was trying to do art
    But I was always falling apart
    But now I can do
    A total ellipse of the art
    It's all down to you
    A total ellipse in my art🎶🎵
    Thanx for the lesson

    you just blew my tiny mind XD trying to make a leather bag pattern, now I just need a formula to make sure the outside line of the eclipse is the same as the diameter of my circle. (and they told me I'd never need maths, wish I'd paid attention)

    • @KevinMcCainStudios
      @KevinMcCainStudios  2 роки тому +2

      I am glad you enjoyed the video. The major axis is the diameter of your circle. Use a compassion to measure half the length of the major axis and you will have a circle as wide ad your ellipse.

  • @John-mz8rj
    @John-mz8rj 2 роки тому

    How do you find the length of the minor access so it's in perspective?

    • @KevinMcCainStudios
      @KevinMcCainStudios  2 роки тому

      An ellipse is a circle in perspective. This is for drawing the ellipse symmetrically. To find the perspective middle, you would lightly put the ellipse In a rectangle in one point perspective then draw from each corner to create an "x". Where the lines cross the minor axis, that is the middle in perspective on the ellipse.

    • @KevinMcCainStudios
      @KevinMcCainStudios  2 роки тому +1

      Yes cut the rectangle in half vertically and horizontally amd you have the major and minor axis. If it's a square then you.have the vertical and horizontal axis to draw a circle.

    I found your instructions very helpful but you don’t explain how to make a much shallower ellipsis. It all depends on how you place the edge on the minor axis but I am not sure I have got it right. The minor axis has to be made much longer than the narrower ellipsis would suggest. But it is a brilliant trick!

    • @KevinMcCainStudios
      @KevinMcCainStudios  3 роки тому
