    Hi! Cog Hill! Well ok so I'm 3 years behind, but got a great education from Part 1 & Part 2(I watched Part2 first, yes I'm a little backwards). My 3 siblings were born on the farm. I was a hospital baby. My parents tore down the old house and rebuilt it more In the city. Dad had a good sized garden that I helped with growing up but nothing like the farm. I ended up with the Plow! And the Corn planters. My plow has just about rusted through. It's a yard ornament now. I have used it many times in my 60+ years, no clue how long it's been in the family. Seeing You using one in these "modern times" made me smile and have memories I hadn't had in a Long time! Just had to comment! Thanks Jason! Congrats to You and your family on the move to the New Cog Hill! It's Because of I'm a Survivor that I have been watching your page and enjoying your Adventure!

    I put cedar wood chips into my garden before I plant, and I mix them up with the dirt, and it helps quite a bit to keep away bugs AND weeds. there's just something about the smell of the cedar, something in that that keeps weeds down and bugs away(at least the crawling ones).

    Would say that Hoss is most likely better, but I can’t hardly justify the price comparison between the 2 right now. Don’t have the kind of money that Hoss wants for their tool as good as it is. Will be trying earthway until I see how it goes. Maybe one day I’ll make the switch. Good video though!

    I love gardening and these little plows are so awesome ..I know for a fact I've thrown 2-3 of these away helping clean out old garages as a kid growing up...I had no idea what they were or how wonderful a tool they were...as a kid you don't know these things.. the people who could have shown me the importance of one of these tools were now dead....leaving me to wheel it around the drive way out to the curb for trash pick up...hahahaha..
    You know what..some one always came along and took them before trash pick up...I should have paid more attention 🙄

    Wheel hoes have been around since the 1800s or perhaps earlier. When I was a kid my Dad had a two wheel version made of all metal. That was 60 years ago. I used to turn it upside down and push it along pretending it was a bull with the cultivators up like horns. That was a whole lot more fun than cultivating the rows with it. That one is upstairs in my barn now. Last year I got lucky and found one of the vintage original single wheel ones at a flea market in mint condition. It was equipped with the sweeps. I look forward to trying it out this year. In my opinion these tools are too much for a small garden and not big enough for big garden where a tiller would work better with a whole lot less sweat. They do however have a use in some situations. I'm going to try to find those uses and dig that one out of my attic. I bet my grandson will enjoy playing bull fighter with it at least.

    I think it was about a week ago I saw your vid with the earthway. I had just seen the Hoss stuff on you tube and I was thinking "man I wonder if Jason has seen these?" That's really cool that they sent you one. The Hoss stuff looks like it is top quality. Maybe they will send you some of the other stuff too! LOL! My garden is already in this year and it's a little small to use one of those but I could have a really big garden if I had one of the Hoss setups. Best thing about it... no gas!

    • @jerrycoon4504
      @jerrycoon4504 6 років тому +2

      PS- I just bought a single tine cultivator from Hoss. It's just a skinny one tooth hoe. I think it will be perfect for weeding around beets and carrots. It's definitely quality. You can tell as soon as you grab it.

    But Jason, ma and pa used the Earthway, that's the first selling point, familiarity is a big one. Price will be the next one, cause if the weeds are in tbe okra you can always hand pull and feed weeds to the pigs. I've fattened many a hog on weeds and corn. Matter of fact that pretty lady in the video looks like she's eaten plenty of weeds. Have a great day and God bless.

    Really useful and well done video Jason! I'm glad you got a cool new toy for yourself. Myself, I use a wire weeder from Twobadcats, which only works when the weeds are tiny. So, I weed 2-3x/week. But if I ever get a big, more traditional garden, I will get me a Hoss.

    Deeper is not always better. Sometimes that just brings up weed seeds.

    • @tommathews3964
      @tommathews3964 6 років тому +1

      Depth of till is directly related to the pressure you apply. I've been using the Hoss Double Wheel Hoe with cultivator teeth for years and it's quite easy to just make a quick pass without applying much pressure to knock out those young weeds without bringing up new weed seed. The oscillating hoes really shine in that application for me. I can do some serious weed damage with a 12" stirrup hoe and shallow passes! Adaptability of the Hoss platform is amazing. I'll use the spreader bar, put an oscillating hoe (various widths) in the center and either a sweep or single cultivator tooth out on the ends and run down the center of the rows. I even space rows in accordance with wheel hoe configuration distances. I've got a lot of garden tools I really like, none more so than my Hoss wheel hoe!

    This was a GREAT comparison video Jason! I hope HOSS says you did them proud! I've been thinking on getting their double wheel high arch hoe for sometime now, just kinda saving up. Anything I've ever gotten from them has been AMAZING quality and I'm really happy w everything. Minus the garden satchel I just got, but whatever. Anyway, great job! I watched it twice 😂😂

    Depends on your ground with clay I have to go with the high wheel to break it up then I can use the hoss.

  • @gtmerkley
    @gtmerkley 3 роки тому

    I use both. The hoss goes deeper But earthway is easier to push. for plowing up my garden and after a hard rain I use the hoss to loosen the soil, For weeding, I like the big wheel better for my clay soil the small wheel of the Hoss does not like to go over big hard clods. But I use a single wheel, Maybe a double wheel might work better.

  • @streakofluck
    @streakofluck 4 роки тому +1

    The smaller wheels actually let you transfer your power to the attachments. The larger wheel uses more power from you to get it turning vs the implement attached to it. It’s pure physics. The smaller wheel allows for more power to the implement.

    I just bought the Hoss High Arch Wheel Hoe and it has cut down the amount of time it takes me to weed my garden in half. They are a little pricey. If I hadn't of had to spend so much on the wheel hoe I would have like to have gotten the seeder as well. It looks like it would be hard to assemble, but it only took me maybe 10 minutes or so to put it together.

    • @CogHillFarm
      @CogHillFarm  6 років тому

      Boom!! Awesome to know about the seeder! Thank you for sharing! They are a little pricey, but man they are so well built. I was honestly shocked at the quality, & from what I gather, their customer service is even better than their product.

      If I could recommend you do a video on one tool from Hoss it would be the push pull hoe. I just weeded my garden in no time. Well worth the money. I never recommend anything, but this will help you tremendously and save you a ton of time.

      Life in the Gila Wilderness I've been using the Hoss double wheel hoe for years in addition to a broadfork and that is usually all I need to get my beds in shape. I generally cover crop my beds in late season and either overwinter it or let the frost get it depending on the crop. I will tarp all of my beds in late winter and kill off whatever cover is left (and weeds/weed seed), pull the tarps and work the beds with my wheel hoe and rake them out, pull the tarps back on to kill any weed seed I disturbed working the beds. Pull the tarps off then I'm ready to plant and go! I will till a bed once every few years or if I am incorporating a large amount of material (leaves for instance) into the bed. Other than that, I'm able to handle it with my wheel hoe and broadfork. Manual labor! Also, my wheel hoe never fails to start as my tiller did this spring!

      Thank you!! No trade secret at all...I use Filomra, but, it does make me frustrated at times....I would like to step up to a more professional editing software but learning a whole new program is no fun either LOL....thank you again!-Jason

      I've been really looking at Filmora, and Nero Premium 18. I have always liked Adobe products, but I don't do much with them anymore as to stay current is fully subscription which I really don't like, pay all that money, and if you don't continue then no more. Kind of like blackmail in my opinion. Thanks for your honesty, keep up the good informative videos with the awesome family friendly humor included! We have a total of 9 children, and I don't like worrying what they might pick up, so I am careful what I watch and listen to!

      It does give you a work out but it’s not extremely difficult at all. Honestly, not much different than using a tiller IMO

    I would hVe like you to compare apples to apples, basically single wheel to single wheel. Everybody knows that two wheels will balance better then one. Hoss makes good products but as you say they're pricey.

    a little late to the party but to be fair you are comparing a 150 dollar product to something over 500. The one wheel Hoss would be somewhat fair comparison but still a hundo more than the Earthway.

    Sorry I had to quit watching when I saw the first pass with the earthway walking down you were directly behind the plow, and finished about the same time. But on the return pass you straddled the row then walked the row beside the earthway plow instead of behind the plow as you did with the hoss plow. This made you struggle and the plow appeared to not be as stable. I believe the hoss plow is better by design, but twice the price for the same job. I always question the comparison videos when it’s given to you to do a review. The hoss plow would have won hands down I’m quite sure... no need to dramatize the comparison... those boys at Hoss are very knowledgeable so I take nothing from them, they have great products.... just saying the video wasn’t quite fair....and after tilling, weeds grow on top of the soil, so no need to go deeper to get the same job done. Overworking the soil can be quite detrimental over time... great job on the video and great editing.
