Ash, you will always have higher raw max damage potential with higher crit damage, but savage gear can be more effective depending on who you are hitting. Let's say you have either 260% CD (CD & savage) or 300% CD (3x CD) sets. The bonus 60% CD = a total damage output increase of 11.11%. Hitting a champ with 1k/2k/4k/6k/8k def under 60% def down has 400/800/1600/2400/3200 effective defense, which is ~20/35/55/66.6/75% damage reduction, or 300/600/1200/1800/2400 against savage gear which is ~15/27.5/46/60/66.6% reduction. This means if you have a starting dmg/hit of 10k, with CD gear dealing 11.11% more you'll deal 11,111 damage base minus damage reduction means you're dealing 8889/7222/5000/3703/2778 damage. With savage set, you'd be dealing 8500/7250/5400/4000/3333 damage. Now, another thing to consider is that when you are not dealing with really high end/end game crit damage numbers, that changes the equation too. Going from 260% to 300% CD is an 11.11% damage increase, but going from 140% to 180% CD is a 16.7% increase in raw damage output. The lower the starting CD, the more effective the CD sets will be compared to savage. So what does this mean? The more likely you are to be facing higher def champs, the more important savage set becomes, but the lower your CD is to start with, the more effective CD gear is. Generally, since in arena gold 4+ the starting def will range from 2-6k, savage gear will almost always be better. This will be especially true if facing a high def/high resist champ that can resist your def down debuffs. With that same 10k starting dmg scenario, but without the def debuff, the dmg outputs against a 4k def champ would be 2444 with CD sets and 2700 with savage. Throw a 60% def buff on there and now you are looking at 1805(3x CD) /1850(savage) which shows there is a point of diminishing returns with savage gear. Overall, the choice of ignoring defense vs boosting CD is very situational and there is no 'best for everything' answer. In the extreme lows and extreme highs of defense, CD is better. In the mid ranges, savage set ignore defense is better. At lower levels, CD is probably better because you get more + damage output increase from each CD% increase. At higher CD levels, savage is probably better. You also need to factor any other ignore defense from skills. Rotos' A3 for example with that same 10k damage value would deal ~6555 damage with CD sets, and 10k damage with savage set against a champ with 4000 defense. Stacking ignore defense sources therefore have an increasing effect whereas stacking CD have diminishing returns. That's why helmsmasher can be really useful, especially when combined with savage set or skills that ignore defense.
K P, make a video that shows this. I am not seeing this in actual game footage. Your theory doesn't seem to match what the gamer sees which is all that matters in my opinion. I am not seeing a big difference myself so your figures seem exaggerated or there are so many other factors that the differences are too small to measure in the real world. I am seeing a small improvement with my ignore defense gear, but it is not that drastic. It is also easier to gear out crit damage because you only need a set of two. It is harder to get good pieces for ignore defense because you need 4 really good pieces instead of just 2.
Savage ia better provided that you actually have a good set... You need 5k attack and at least 220-240% CD to be better than 260-280% CD with no ignore defense. I have a CH in savage at around 225% CD and one in broken sets at 280% CD and they do pretty much the same damage on bosses. However, the one in savage does slightly more damage to mobs. So just farm FK and use the best combination of the pieces that you get, but Savage would be better in my opinion for arena and it allows you to get away without a def down champ if needed.
@@xgcdarkninja911 Now we all figured out what's wrong with giving the right info, oh no, we're sheeps that believes Ash and no one else, that's you. Accept it, Ash is wrong.
You should test the masteries without changing the gear - I think that the helmsmasher should be better at the crit damage level you have. And as a side note - it's not a weak hit just because it's not critical :) (although it is weak... :D )
I was keen to find this info for a while. From your work I can see it's better to build him in ignore def and savage gear if we have lower gear. If I'll get to 300 crit dmg than I'll build him with pure dmg focuse. Until now my priority was 100 crit rate. Thank you for this! :D
I would think it depends on who you're up against, like ignore defense would be better against an extremely tanky team and raw crit damage would be better against speedier more offensive teams.
Actually it's the opposite, because there's a diminishing return on damage reduction with defense following a negative logarithmic+constant type of curve (there's a reddit post with the formulas and diagrams, i don't remember exactly), and it also depends on your relative crit damage. Let's say if you already have a huge amount, 40% more won't change everything, it would be about 10% increase if you already have 250% crit damage, while ignoring 25% defense is almost always huge, and even increases your damage more the less defense the enemies have.
The rng aspect of helmsmasher is something to keep in mind. When it works it great, when it doesn’t it’s literally a useless mastery. The crit damage one is consistent at all times.
True. It might be better for a double hitting nuker so you have 2× the chance to hit it but on a single hit nuker I'd rather have the consistency of the extra Cr Damage
Im actually surprised how on time this video came out, im building my seer rn and was searching for vid like this yesterday. Btw ive watched all of your content, big fan
The better of the two builds depends primarily on the defense of your opponent. Essentially, if enemy defense is really high then ignoring defense becomes more valuable. With lower enemy defense more critical damage is preferable.
Hey Ash, just pulled a Cruetraxa, and was wondering if you could do a guide on her since you have had her for a while. I know you have mentioned her many times but i can't find a video about her on your channel.
Because she's a void legendary, and most people won't have her... But i'm in the same boat, got her aswell, would love to see Ash do a showcase on her.
Thanks for this .. .I didn't want to spend the resources to do this, so I appreciate your sacrifice. I'm guessing the difference is consistency. Helm/savage might do more when both proc, but they aren't going to both proc at the same time. With crit damage you can consistently land it and plan a little better (less reliance on RNGods).
Hey ash I really like this kind of content Since I dont have the resources to test things like this. However as someone stuck in the new Bronze/silver limbo in arena, how you casually lost like 9 battles hurt in the pit of my soul.keep the content coming man!

I would have also tested it with and without the decrease defense buff. I know every theoretically should be using decrease defense AOE's but not all of us do. It would be interesting to test if the difference widens or closes depending on whether the enemies had decrease def or not.

Another good video. Personally, my Big 'Un is in cruel and acc atm with 99% crit rate. I do about half the damage as you in dungeons, double in arena (sometimes) and the same in campaign. I am working towards gearing him in Savage. I'm sure your gh is better than mine also. Masteries are like your second choice but with the acc boost instead of defense.
He would do better in savage gear if there was no decrease def on the targets. But a lot better than the full crit damage strategy in the same situation
Savage gear ignore def multiplier caps at +33% dmg. Although generally it will be a bonus 20% dmg, as targets don't generally have massive defense values. However, that is not to say it is bad gear... If you already have 300% Crit Dmg and add an extra 40% you aren't increasing your output by 40%. The relative increase is actually 340/300 = 1.13. That's only an extra 13% of your output. And It's worse with Atk% gear, although cruel gear may have potential. I think savage gear is excellent for arena, given that I expect Def to be much higher there than in dungeons (I have no clue what the dungeon defense values are). I've created a graph showing how I came to my conclusion here: www.geogebra.org/graphing/rrbqzqpj x axis represents the target's Defense and y axis the Multipliers of defense manipulation.

Ash, you truly should do a video discouraging everyone from playing this game. Plarium are absolute criminals and this game is a money shredder. Scum of the earth predators.
best to test with champ that has 100% crit attack on A3, or keep same gear on and change mastery and see if more crit is better than proc for bypassing defense.
70% worth of crit damage is a big difference. Not everyone can get 320% crit damage. But getting 220% crit damage with a savage set isn’t nearly as hard. So to me it suggests that it is easier to meet the gear requirements needed to nuke with ignore def gear and helmsmasher than to stack crit damage to 300+
Great vid as always ,thank ash. But can I ask the difference between the 2 builds was not just the 20% extra crit damage. First build was 4500 attack and crit dam 326. But the second build was only 4400 and just 265 crit damage. That's was less than the 20% reduction. Would this extra 30% make a difference with the results?
It's about how high the Def of the champion is. If you attack a kael with 1k Def cruel won't do that much, attacking a 4k Def champ cruel ignores way more Def
You really should only change one thing at a time. Just switch masteries and then just switch gear. I think ignore defense can produce more damage, however, I don't like the mastery version because it only has a chance to proc, where as the crit damage mastery is on every hit. You may loose some maximum damage potential, but I prefer the consistency.
Good test would have been vs Clan boss or a dungeon boss to test them vs higher defense. Trash mobs and the teams brutally over-match in arena are not high defense enough.
Ooh interesting touch cuz I utilize them both hmm should be another good watch.. I recently pulled yannica.. my 2nd legendary .. and have been fiddling around with getting her.. and find that her A1 AOE that happens under veil.. hits around as hard as my battlesageA1 aoe.. not very hard lol to nuke and think it's just a matter of gear.. No Ash, you are mistaken, 69% is just perfect *wink*
Thanks, had this question myself am building 2 sckullcrowns with almost the same setup just to see and use in arena.
Ash, you truly should do a video discouraging everyone from playing this game. Plarium are absolute criminals and this game is a money shredder. Scum of the earth predators.
best to test with champ that has 100% crit attack on A3, or keep same gear on and change mastery and see if more crit is better than proc for bypassing defense.
the gear performs better than many of the champs, i eventully figured
Also, the helm smasher is only 50% chance, and it's not that noticeable to see when it triggers
I have my big un in relentless gear. Is that a bad idea? If so which type of champs should I be using relentless gear on.
one of the Best is Rotos, and my Frank has aswell Relentless
It's about how high the Def of the champion is. If you attack a kael with 1k Def cruel won't do that much, attacking a 4k Def champ cruel ignores way more Def
Hi Ash. Great video as always. Your background music is way too loud on my head phones. It's pretty distracting
I wondered this but can’t afford the silver to try.
Was thinking exact same thing
Helpful mate
Should just look at total damage done at the end of battle summary, do that 5 times for each set and see
how you built altan
You really should only change one thing at a time. Just switch masteries and then just switch gear. I think ignore defense can produce more damage, however, I don't like the mastery version because it only has a chance to proc, where as the crit damage mastery is on every hit. You may loose some maximum damage potential, but I prefer the consistency.
Hey my man can you make a video about SETHALIA
My septi has savage set and flawless execute :3
So helpful thank u
Please do a video about runic warden build for fire knight. I am new and ftp player. I can't pass level 8/9 fire knight
His a1 hits the hardest
Good test would have been vs Clan boss or a dungeon boss to test them vs higher defense. Trash mobs and the teams brutally over-match in arena are not high defense enough.
Someone did the math and they found out above 230% CD, Helmsmasher is better
you would get better result if you have the same crit rate for both test
also why dont you just look at the total number at the end of the round?
just put a crit rate auro to get 100% crit. like bad el just make him slow so you dont include the 20% damage increase
Vary helpful ty
ignore def made more dam even with less crit rate but you got more weak hit
Why not do doom tower so u don’t waste energy
8:10 heh, nice
ignore defense would be better if there was no decrease desense
Fun fact: Pandas will walk around a hill instead of over it.
Nukes have to be the most fun champs in this game tho.. I want foli and ithos 👌🔥 anyone have fav nukers?? Lmk
I have two folis should I build the second one?
@@clemsonalum98 oh wow bud definitely yes from me. That'll b huge for 3v3 arena.. those gold bars are nice too 👌
First hit on savage was 12k, 91k, 21k, 12k.
And second hit on savage was 72k, 27k, 39k, and 70k
That was big uns A2
Dungeons A3 was 35 to 50k
Your dmg numbers will be similar in bot sets since you are using 60% defense down in every run
I think theres a threshold with crit dam. If you cant reach 380% crit dam then your better with dec def
you should do these in Tag arena , so you dont lose so much points lol
