  • In January 2021, New Balance announced the official discontinuation/phasing out of the P.F. Flyers line. Known for its retro high top basketball shoes, P.F. Flyers perhaps got the jolt it needed as a brand in 1993 when the movie Sandlot was released, and a character therein required something above and beyond your typical Chuck Taylors, a shoe guaranteed to make you run faster, and jump higher, and he uses a pair of all-black Center Hi P.F. Flyers.
The brand would not see its end, however, as in July 2021, it was reacquired and on the last day of the year, reopened sales of its classic center hi shoes, and with them, a new Sandlot-esque all black shoe, called the 1993.
I have only worn Center Hi's since May 2009, and all but one pair were Sandlot editions. When I found out the brand was discontinued I started buying up pairs on eBay just to hold me over until they would come back, and now they have. So how do the brand new 1993 shoes compare to the Sandlot Center Hi's of yesteryear? Sit through my verbose 20 minute unboxing video to find out.
Spoiler alert: its the same shoe

Finally I have been looking for hours to find a person who compares the new ones to the old ones everyone is just comparing them to the Chuck 70s,

Given the price hike I too wondered if we were gonna get an upgraded show like the Chuck 70s but IMO compared to baseline Chucks even old PF Flyers were an upgrade.

I brought these back in 2016 when they first dropped. Pf flyers are the only brand I wear. My same sandlot center hi are still getting me around

I noticed one of the older pairs of your “sandlots” Had souls separating from the body of the shoes. That was also another problem with the earlier PF Flyers. The ones made prior to the MC 2001 series.
They had piss poor quality control and several pairs I had he the soles delaminate and fall apart after 2 months of use. The side foxing would also separate. Other issues with quality control included irregularities in the soles, the heels would overhang because they were assembled with the wrong size sole, and they also used thinner canvas on the earlier version of the mc2001 high tops. The last version had much thicker canvas.
I hope that kassia Davis takes greater care to insure higher quality control. I realize they are using sweatshop labor because they are too cheap to pay Americans to make them, but for $80 canvas shoes to have such issues is unforgivable.
New balances made in USA version of the Flyers was $100 and those used all leather uppers. No reason they can’t make these canvas ones here in America for $80

Anyone else think the brown color that the black flyers turn into from sun damage is amazing? I need me a pair to leave out in the Texas sun for a while! Very nice.

I often struggle with this every time its time to move to a new pair. I grow so used to the aged black/brown that I second guess whether I enjoy the fresh black at all. All part of the process of breaking in a fresh pair.

Great video. I live in Indonesia where no one knows about pf flyers brand, it's really hard to find, finally I got my first pair of pf flyers and it's made in Indonesia, I was almost order the shoes from US but the shipping was too expensive, so I keep looking for it in Indonesia, and yes I got the pf flyers without box (only shoes) and I believe it was stolen from the factory, its exactly the same color and type like your new pf . It was only about $30

Wow! That really puts this whole shoe game into perspective. That’s an amazing experience. Made there, and they need to be stolen to be sold there. At a crazy price, too! Here’s how American I am, though. When I read your story, I thought that I’d like to go there and get a bunch of pairs, bring them back here and market them as straight off the line, stolen Indonesian flyers and resell them here or anywhere else they’re popular. I know I’d pay a dollar or two above retail for the pair you have. The provenance behind them is fascinating. I’d need proof to sell them that way, but video can handle that. Thanks for the info!

I was thinking about buying a pair of these in Navy Blue. Just wanna see how they compare to my Chuck Taylor Street Hightops. Those usually last me about two years before they're ready for the trash.

Really legit and informative review! They are not a popular shoe. I work at one of the most popular places in Portland and see 1000's of people every day. I've seen people in PF Flyer's 4x in the last year and 2 were actually fellow workers. One guy came up to me and told me how much he loved PF flyers, some tattooed punk rock kid told me he liked my PF Flyers as well, a co-worker also said he liked the style. I've had mine 2.5 years. The outer sidewall on the left shoe is starting to let in water in wet weather and I've worn down parts of the insole to the rubber underneath. I'm looking to get another pair, but the 1993's are currently sold out on their official website. PF Flyers were discontinued for 2 years before the brand was revived. New Balance had been selling old stock for 2 years prior without anyone knowing it was old/discontinued stock. The "PF" Posture Foundation insole (very different feel from Converse), high quality laces, high quality/thicker canvas and better quality sole is the biggest difference vs. regular "white label" on the heel Converse. I don't know about the Converse 70's. I like the vintage look and not having the same shoes as everyone else. Who knows how long the brand will be around for, but I'll keep supporting them. My pair now I've been wear since April 2020, 2.5 years for work and leisure. Very minimal, if at all, wear to the soles. I'd love to see a skateboarder review them and how they wear. Thanks for the review, very cool! Have a great day 😊

Thanks for watching. I used to skate but not like, doing tricks or anything, it was just my preferred way to basically get up to the gas station and to friends houses, and didnt really notice any sole wear like I did on my Etnies, but I think the Etnies, being "Skate shoes" probably had a softer compound and just like tires, had better grip at the expense of wear.
I will say, I have only worn my recent 1993s once. The brownish pair in this video are FINALLY starting to reach the end of their life. Only beef I had with the newest ones are that it feels like the laces are actually comparatively cheap. I feel like they are thinner in width AND in material. They also hurt to wear but it had been maybe since early or pre pandemic that I last had to break in a pair of shoes. As time goes on I'll contemplate them further.

This I dont have an answer for, as I havent worn a pair of chucks since about 2004 and then I as 12 years old. If I get a chance to try a pair on I'll compare apples for apples, but I CAN tell you that with a 10.5 mens PF center hi on my feet, my shoes are EXACTLY 12 inches long.

Its tough for me to say. What I can say with confidence is that the the 10.5 Mens size I wear comes in at a nearly exact 12 inch long shoe. I routinely use my shoes to measure feet when necessary lol

3 months late but hope this helps.
In Chucks/ 70s I go a full size down to a 10 but in Flyers I go with my true to size 11. My feet are rather narrow and I like my shoes to fit snug but of course not to the point that my toes are cramped.

You don’t really show the actual shoes up close. So bottom line, are these exactly the same as the last version made by new balance? If not what are the differences?
By the way, there was never an all black version of this shoe in the 60’s so I’ve never understood why they made the shoes that color for the “sandlot” movie.
The previous version before the last made by “new balance” were the best because they used a nearly identical to the original diamond pattern sole. For some inexplicable reason someone had the bright idea to alter it. The whole point of these shoes is their vintage styling. Make them as they were in the 50’s.
I hope Ms. Davis’s obsession with pushing gender politics doesn’t cause he to lose focus of the fact lots of men buy these shoes and want them to be as authentic and exact to the way they were made in the 50’s and. 60’s as possible. The Pf Flyers brand was never aimed at women originally. I think companies like Coca-Cola and others should stop trying to push political agendas that may alienate a segment of their customers and be professional and leave their personal political views out of business and just focus on selling products that people want and maintaining quality.

    • @TyCrawford
      @TyCrawford  2 роки тому

Youre right, I should have shot more b-roll up close of all my shoes to show differences but yes, these are identical to the most recent New Balance iteration, aside frmo cost. Frankly, I dont really care what the rest of the brand does so long as they still offer a unisex center hi in an all black like these. When New Balance was running things in the 2010s, I never really cared for anything they out out besides Center Hi and Center Los. Moving forward I'd like to see an improvement in durability with the outsole and fromt bumper, but given the evidence that they are identical, I dont know what to expect.
