Aethelwold is unfortunately very smart and intelligent….he lacks honor, love, respect, compassion, humility, courage. He is definitely the “Little Finger “ of this show.
I hate when people compare really good shows to shows like game of thrones but I see what your saying and even though I DO NOT like the comparison I see what you were saying.
That was exactly how I reacted the first time I saw this, I figured he would get caught or wimp out at the last minute. I practically shouted when he actually went through with it
it was something that everyone did not see coming the first time round but at the same time killing Ragnar marked the point of no return for Aethelwold.
"She's hurt... but she has zero understanding of anyone else's perspective." Well, that's pretty much always been Brida in a nutshell. She was maybe a little more flexible when she was young, but she definitely has not gotten more tolerant with age. This episode was very sad to watch for the first time, and it doesn't really get much easier even after watching it a dozen times. I also don't think Aethelwold took the sword out of Ragnar's reach at the end to deny him Valhalla, but because he thought Ragnar was reaching for it to try and stab him with it. Aethelwold is still a dipshit though.
Brida is very much supposed to represent what Uhtred would be if Uhtred did not Compromise and wisen up and learn about the broader scope and scale for what is at stake.

He chose, no one forced Uthreds hands on anything. Choices have consequences
I understand her very much, though. Uhtred doesn't always have to fight for Alfred but he always returns to them. So in her eyes it's a betrayal. And it's sort of is.

Ragnar's death is one of the most pointless and horrific I've ever seen on screen and the fact he is denied entry into Valhalla because of a cowardly turd hits even harder. And Utrehd warned him. The themes of Utrehd being constantly dragged into situations he wants nothing to do with is consistent with Norse mythology the belief you fate is controlled by the three spinners and the greater your destiny the more complex and difficult your life will be.
Ragnar's death being pointless and so anti-climatic is the whole point of it. it goes to show that yes even a badass Earl like Ragnar son of the fearless can be killed naked and defenceless in his bed. he's effectily in the same boat as Leofric and Clappa and others in later seasons (spoilers) that go out in really anti-climatic ways because that is just the way of war.
This is why I'm so happy fate has blessed Uhtred with Finan and the gang. It speaks to his beautiful character that he has these type of people around him... Ragnar is in a sea of vipers and aspiring back( or chest) stabbers.
Agreed. Throughout the books the phrase "wyrd bin ful araed" (can't find the correct old English letters) is used. A simple translation is "Fate is wholly inexorable". Uhtred is always bound by events and oaths.
I remember my husband and I just sitting IN SHOCK after this episode. We couldn’t even speak! 😂 Ragnar is the only Sword Dane worth following, so painful watching him die.
And here we have the true development of something incredible. They somehow turn Athelwold into the main antagonist despite in previous seasons to the viewer he seems to be the more insignificant jester type character. Its really amazing how they pull it off.

He didn't grab the sword to stop him from going to Valhalla he grabbed it cuz he thought Ragnar was going to use it to kill him but that was by far the most cowardly way to kill someone
To be fair his only option was to kill Ragnar in a cowardly way. As he said "I'm not going to fight him" - they're not remotely evenly matched. The big issue here surely is that Ragnar may not have even been planning to kill Aethelwold. It was probably just Cnut's manipulation of Aethelwold to make that out to be the case as he wanted Ragnar gone so he could be the army leader. Ragnar had most likely sated his anger at Aethelwold (which was really just shooting the messenger as Aethelwold had told Ragnar that Uhtred was planning on deserting the army) already by repeatedly punching him.
The more a character can make you hate them, the greater the acting. It is easy to play the good guy. I think he is playing his part amazingly. Another great one yall.
We have seen a sprinkle of "foresight" powers before! Not just Skade. Brida "walked with the gods" drinking the mushroom drink where she saw Ragnar Ragnarsson and her with him. Isolde foresaw Utred coming to the Welsh (?) king to free her.
"Propably Edward forced her" That's a pretty big statement since there is nothing to imply this. They are young and by all accounts in love. To call Edward a rapist based on nothing is maybe a bit much.

That line, "What If I am a Christian by birth and a Dane by heart" Rings true even to this day. Every child born in Denmark in the current day, is born into the Protestant church. But with freedom of religion, more and more are turning their eyes to the old gods again
Aethelwold's play was made a lot easier by the fact that the Danes were having a pre-battle drunk fest. No top-down discipline. I love that this series (and Bernard Cornwell's novels of course) are willing to show flaws as well as strengths in both the characters and the various factions of both Danes and English.

@@michaelkean5969 Uhtred allowed himself to grow... Brida is where he was back when he was younger, narrow minded and impulsive. Dealing with and surviving Alfred, Guthrum and all those other things grew him up.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 no he doesn't you clearly don't understand his character. Uhtred isn't bound to Ragnar and Brida and doesn't owe them anything. The guy sacrificed his own freedom for Ragnar and his relationship with Alfred is complicated. Ragnar and Brida aren't mentally mature enough to understand that.
@@michaelkean5969 He doesn't owe them anything but when you are literally going to join them and their cause and FINALLY side with the Danes and be hand in hand with Brida and Ragnar and then you go "sorry brah, I love ya but I have to go save another dame cause I'm a simp" that's a huge slap in the face to them.
Love the reaction as always guys. One thing I noticed is it looked like Aethelwold was manipulating Cnut but when they talked about killing Ragnar the opposite was true.
Throwing spears at shield walls was actually pretty effective, of course it would be more effective if the spear found flesh but no man will break position to pull a spear out of his shield, therefore it’ll weigh down the shield making it easier on the front lines to pull them down and making the defenders tire quicker
4 Brothers not just one of Alfred's brothers died as a King before Alfred took the throne (though the first died as a sub King of his fathe, before his father's own death)
Aethelwold wasn't drunk; he was just pretending to be so that he had an alibi for that night. People would be like "He couldn't have killed Ragnar as he was too drunk." And I pretty much thought he would kill Ragnar when he said it - it didn't surprise me that much. It had been signalled that we were about to see the end of Ragnar when Cnut was saying he had fulfilled his life's purpose by avenging his dad's death. Yes Aethelwold is smart in a cunning way. Don't forget he was supposed to be the King and so would have had an elite education.
Are you guys forgetting how many times they saved Uthred and took him back when he was enslaved or discarded? They have every reason to angry with him. he keeps choosing other people over his family. None of this is surprising
He kept going back to the Saxons because he is Saxon but he not only gave Aethelfled his word but he gave his oath to Alfred saving Ragnar. But people tend to forget his children, sister, and Hild are in Wessex. He would never attack there. They were asking him to destroy not only Alfred but everything he's worked for.
32:10 "must be freezing as sh*t. though his shit is probably hot so its probably not freezing..." -is this what the phrase being good at sh*t talking means ? xD
"this is not fair" really sums up quite a lot of TLK storylines. Æthelwold is such a Machiavellian P.O.S. The actor who plays him Harry McEntire, seems totally lovely in real life, he's obv good at his job!
Just watched this episode and I am soo pissed that they allowed this piece of chicken shit to kill a great warrior, and I loved Ragnar. I swear to God he's gonna get his and I'll be damned if it isn't Uthred that kills him.
Alfred saying "Do you think I wished for my brother to die?" hits harder when you realize that he was actually the youngest of five brothers. He lost his father and four brothers before the crown was thrust upon him. He probably never expected to rule growing up.
Alfred is a dangerous enemy for Uthred or anyone to go against. Don't forget Alfred is still smarter than Uthred, while Uthred is the greater warrior. War with Wessex won't be a cake walk for anyone.
Great reaction guys.....the fire is just going to hotter...and hotter.....just buckle up you two....we are going to take you for a ride...there will be blood.

I believe its different with Ragnar he was home with hes family and brida only wanted to know if he was with them or not no One said to bend the knee only if he was with their enemies or with them
For real the Death of Ragnar but that little shit was one of the most maddening freaking thing I watched on the show, I was so freaking blue. It was done in such a cowardly manner too. And to think that little shit was able to sneak in and kill a great warrior like Ragnar too. And the thing with Athelwald is that I always viewed him as this funny manipulative little shit that you sort of tolerate like that annoying little brother. You knew he was shit but he was a funny character on the show. But after that murder he became my most hated character. I was like alright this is on now, (b)itch!
A movie I don't think you've reacted to that I think you both would really enjoy is the 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo. I think it'd be right up your alley.
It's been a long time since first watching this show, & a lot of the little details are... A bit foggy, in my head. But holy %#*&!! I very much remember this one! I was pissed when that little troll got to Ragnar... That was probably as close to GoT as it gets. Lol. I'm gonna have to rewatch the rest of this show, so I can remember what TF is going on. 🤘😁 Catch ya next vid!
yay more the last kingdom, we want more. such an amazing show, but damn is he freaking handsome and with that long hair. i like young ragnar too so much. Uthred deserves so much, he can let lose all he wants, everything gets taken from him and he's so strong mentally and physically. yeah brida pissed me off after a while. yeah i fucking cried when they killed og ragnar which is fucked up and a bad idea on their part.
This episode really shines the light on how Uhtred was right the Danes. They really tear themselves apart with their own greed or issues. Allowing that piece of weasel sh*t to spread malice about Uhtred breaking him from Ragnar is the first issue. But it likely all goes back to that weasel Cnut (I think if we shift the N and U it describes him better), he is directly responsible for Ragnar's untimely end, deceiving Brida as well. Bloodhair is so focused on Skade he cant really do much else. And Haesten is just a freaking weasel. However if Cnut didnt get started they likely could've held and formed a great army. Love the reactions but I really do love this show. I wish more people watched it and reacted to it. Along with some other hidden great shows like 12 Monkey's or BSG or even Justified or SoA :)
Uthred is by far my favorite character but Finan is such a close second. This show would not be the same without Finan. So glad they give him a lot of screen time.
Uhtred made that oath to Aethelflead in love....the way he looked at her after rescuing her the first time in Season 2 made it obvious. They love each other, but it's a forbidden love.

@@michaelkean5969 I mean I get her. He does betray them all the time when he keep going with Alfred and act like his (b)itch. lol
Haesten: “could you not have simply taken if from her??”
Love the reaction as always guys. One thing I noticed is it looked like Aethelwold was manipulating Cnut but when they talked about killing Ragnar the opposite was true.
nobody is save in this show, holy crap, super realistic, no plot armor like in other shows.
I was so upset that little worm killed Ragnar 😩
RIP Ragner.
Destiny is all.
One of my favorite shows ever. People keep dismissing him. He is far smarter and craftier than the other show characters give him credit for.
Throwing spears at shield walls was actually pretty effective, of course it would be more effective if the spear found flesh but no man will break position to pull a spear out of his shield, therefore it’ll weigh down the shield making it easier on the front lines to pull them down and making the defenders tire quicker
Heh, we were all waiting for your reaction at the end there...!
4 Brothers not just one of Alfred's brothers died as a King before Alfred took the throne (though the first died as a sub King of his fathe, before his father's own death)
Edward was married to that girl they sent to nunnery. Which is why they put in the nunnery so he could remarry who they wanted him to.
Even though it wasn't as EPIC as the Death of Bjorn Ironside, Ragnars death made me just as mad LOL.
32:10 "must be freezing as sh*t. though his shit is probably hot so its probably not freezing..." -is this what the phrase being good at sh*t talking means ? xD
My face the whole reaction: 😬
Cnut is the voice of Eivor in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla if you’re familiar with that.
This episode!!! R.I.P. Ragnar
Everyone talking about how smart and manipulative Aethelwold is but Knute completely manipulated him into doing his dirty work for him.
I swear to God he's gonna get his and I'll be damned if it isn't Uthred that kills him.
ep 3x6 beginning is one of my favorite moments of the series!
Ragnar didn't protect himself in the middle of a camp of vikings who want to take his place. He let his guard down. You can't do that.
Alfred saying "Do you think I wished for my brother to die?" hits harder when you realize that he was actually the youngest of five brothers. He lost his father and four brothers before the crown was thrust upon him. He probably never expected to rule growing up.
Did you know that The guy playing Ragnars cousin Cnut, he did the voice for Eivor in assassins creed valhalla.
Uhtred is not going to be happy. O shit ..
Alfred is a dangerous enemy for Uthred or anyone to go against. Don't forget Alfred is still smarter than Uthred, while Uthred is the greater warrior. War with Wessex won't be a cake walk for anyone.
Great reaction guys.....the fire is just going to hotter...and hotter.....just buckle up you two....we are going to take you for a ride...there will be blood.
haestin didnt lie about uhtred. he left before uhtred changed his mine about helping the danes. remember beocca saw haestin heading south when he was on his way there
Athelwold might be pathetic but no one can fight back from being killed in their sleep
Trivia for Nikki; Haesten’s horse is named Joker
The Last Kingdom deserves to go global it's just sensational it's so blooming amazing the cast the characters the script everything a masterpiece that is so underated!!! TLK to go Global... Destiny is All 🛡️⚔️🛡️ love your reactions 😬
I believe its different with Ragnar he was home with hes family and brida only wanted to know if he was with them or not no One said to bend the knee only if he was with their enemies or with them
Haeston didn't lie about Uhtred. To his knowledge Uhtred is still in Dunholm. He was leaving as Beouca and Thora arrived.
Thyra*
Skade cursed Uhtred once more so that’s why Ragnar died.
Ragnar was the best, and I didn't want him to die 😢
For real the Death of Ragnar but that little shit was one of the most maddening freaking thing I watched on the show, I was so freaking blue. It was done in such a cowardly manner too. And to think that little shit was able to sneak in and kill a great warrior like Ragnar too. And the thing with Athelwald is that I always viewed him as this funny manipulative little shit that you sort of tolerate like that annoying little brother. You knew he was shit but he was a funny character on the show. But after that murder he became my most hated character. I was like alright this is on now, (b)itch!
Love this show
A movie I don't think you've reacted to that I think you both would really enjoy is the 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo.
I think it'd be right up your alley.
Your in for a treat your in for a shock shock and shock can’t wait for your next watch
Aethalwald in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles was a brave and accomplished fighter 😮
Best day of the week is when i watch you guys watch TLK. That sounds mildly creepy. Lol
Catch ya next vid!
Godfather the saying Just when I got out, they pull me back in.
yay more the last kingdom, we want more. such an amazing show, but damn is he freaking handsome and with that long hair. i like young ragnar too so much. Uthred deserves so much, he can let lose all he wants, everything gets taken from him and he's so strong mentally and physically. yeah brida pissed me off after a while. yeah i fucking cried when they killed og ragnar which is fucked up and a bad idea on their part.
I love how the show played on how no one watching ever expected Aethelwald to pull it off and then he actually did.
Makes you hate him so much more
This episode really shines the light on how Uhtred was right the Danes.
Nikki: Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. (Cracked me up!)
Yall definitely need to check out the Peaky Bliders show next!!!
You think you’re mad? Imagine what happens when Uhtred learns Ragnar was murdered.
My favourite Ar slings coming whit a dope reaction nice lol
Uthred wants to be in the Assassins Order so bad lmao
when you finish a season, you should watch the original season trailer.
the s3 trailer already told us a major story and i was gobsmacked.
the s2 trailer was the best one.
