"I don't want it to be boring."
That's definitely not a word I'd use to describe this film.
Lol thats just what I said to myself right now :D
"Do those look like SS uniforms?"
"Nah, they're just grey."
*Doogie Himmler has entered the chat*
Yep, Paul V did that quite on purpose. The same with modeling Clarence Boddicker in Robocop after Heinrich Himmler Someone who he considered to be both immensely evil and intelligent.
@@DireAxis yup, in the book and film the Earth is fascist. we invaded the bug planet. we are the bad guys in this movie. love it
As a teen it went right over my head. It was just soldiers fighting bugs. Watching it now it's incredibly on the nose. The outfits, the war propaganda commercials, the school scenes teaching war...it's far from hidden. No doubt they'll get a hundred comments about it.
@@chuckminskoff6071 No, in the book they are not fascist, not even close, and even in the film they clearly mention people don't have to join military service. Earth is a peaceful planet where everyone can live how they want and live in luxury, even officials are elected former military. Joining military service is not encouraged and in fact they do everything they can to discourage people. It's something you have to want and be willing to fight for, that is one of the points of the book. People in government should be those that know the sacrifice and cost of war, so they choose when to enter a war very very carefully. Verhoven didn't read the book and didn't understand what the book was even about, it's why he passed the book on to the guy that helped him write the story.
@@Ghadius This is film is not more famous because a lot of the "official " reviewers did not get it, they thought it was just fascist propaganda. This film is awesome.
This movie ages like fine wine oddly enough, or it's just that the older you get and as things change during the decades, the movie kinda becomes more and more meta. The movie was definitely ahead of its time with its satire and even its effects, but I feel its humor fits well with every generation growing up and especially older ones where the world was kinda seen through these misty "everything is great" glasses and anything that was upfront, honest and had dark humor surrounding it was more "in the dark". Nowadays however that's way more out there and mainstream, and everything horrible happening is viewed in a more nihilistic humor this movie is fits so well into.
the comparison of the outfits to nazi uniforms was actually a good catch. the film apparently was meant to be a commentary on fascism (in part), so fascist imagery was used throughout
@Al Tee that's what irritates me the most about the film. The director tried to adapt the novel as a satire on fascism, even though the society in the novel is hardly fascist. Militarist, perhaps. But not in a totalitarian fascist sort of way. The society in the novel is actually extremely liberal in certain respects.
@@derek96720 Not satire at all. Dude was idiot that completely failed at what he was trying to do.
@@derek96720 the novel kinda has been criticized as being a fascist book (when you break it down its more... hardcore libertarianism) and yeah i dont really know how you'd be able to make a movie adaption of the novel. Over half of the novel is just talking about society and philosophy and why they do things the way they do things and unless youre into that it can be a pretty boring read.
But yeah. Basically the director only read the beginning of the book, got bored, saw there was criticism about it being a fascist book. And that's how we got starship troopers
@@jjc5871 I guess that you have no idea what fascism is do you? The schools are telling the young students to not to join the military. The parents are telling them to not to join the military. The fucking military is trying to get them to quit the military. Absolutely no one is forcing the popular to join the military. Can you please point out the fascism in that. "THEY'VE GOT GERMAN TYPE UNIFORMS AND THAT'S ALL IT TAKES GRRRR"... Fucking grow up.
@@Nekoksu Lmao you got issues dude.
I think this film gets better with each rewatch.
no, it's getting worse. Read the book, and then compare.
@@bessarion1771 I did. Love them both. Still prefer the movie however,.
@@Camuska no way. The book is a lot better, the movie has nothing in common with the book. BTW, I agree with everything Heinlein wrote in it.
@@bessarion1771 ....what? The book literally glorified militarism, imperialism, and fascist dictatorships. 90% of it is Heinlein expositing to the reader why democracy bad fascism good
Where the comment section on UA-cam can sometimes be better than the video itself... this movie will always offer something that will make someone want to watch it again.
This movie inspired a ton of controversy when it came out because people thought it was supporting fascism. The director was shocked that people couldn't tell it was satire
Americans don't get satire anymore.
@@shaggycan did they ever?
Considering how we reacted after 9/11 it doesn't surprise me.
They are literally being attacked by an alien force that is killing millions of people.
Being sympathetic to their "morale boosting propaganda" is easy.
It's not like V for Vendetta. There is a REAL cause for unity happening.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 Not really. It's even hinted at in the movie that the "asteroid" that the bugs "sent" to hit earth was really nothing more than a false flag attack by humanity on itself in order to justify going to war with the insects. Very clever movie.
7:30 Funny thing with the lashing scene is, the book goes on and on about how and why corporal punishment became the norm in that society, even outside of military settings. People who were flogged, rather than serving a years-long prison sentence were less likely to be repeat offenders, and faced less discrimination, as the punishment was a once-and-done thing, instead of marking them as an ex-con permanently.
That's very interesting.
Yeah, that's not true at all, and it's a religious way to think crime about and punishment. Prison is not for punishment is to protect to society from dangerous individuals that want to hurt it.
@@wgjung1 Yeah, the way of thinking is definitely right-wing, and it assumes the best of cases in that people in general go along with it. For what it's worth I wasn't trying to idealize this approach. The society described on the book idealizes violence to a huge degree in many ways, and while fascinating to read about it, it's fairly obvious why it wouldn't jive with actual human nature.
Cool story.. That's not how the real world works
"They look so much like Nazis, though."
Yeah, that was a conscious decision. It's satire about fascism and the military industrial complex.
And the hilarious thing is that the book was written to be a social commentary on who should have the right to vote, rather than 'all has the right'. It's a powerful thing after all to have political influence and we happily give it to everyone that's a citizen of voting age... yet you have to go through hell to get a driver's license (and it's not exactly cheap either), etc.
@@kinagrill You seem to be implying that a populace all having the right to vote is a bad thing. That's...certainly one way to look at the world. Another viewpoint--held clearly by the movie makers--is that the idea of having a military controlled government is most concerning and worth attacking with satire.
And driving a vehicle isn't some ultra important right, and having to study for and pass a test isn't exactly having to "go through hell."
@@oneopinion6806 It is. Morons voting ruins who might have won. Old people that votes the same political party they did back in the 50s or 60s cuz they always voted that even tho the political party is very different today, thus their vote is harmful for the intended election.
And nope, the movie maker never read the book except for like an overview of 3 pages worth of info. If you've read the actual book you'd know that the setup for it is that the political system they have WORKS: that's why it's still kept. Nothing better has arrived that keeps the same low unemployment rates, high living standards, etc. etc.
It's like how if you want to own a gun, you really should be able to prove that you SHOULD own such a dangerous thing and know how to handle it and when NOT to handle it. Same should go for the right to vote.
Fun fact : it still looks decent because they used models instead of CGI. It really makes a massive difference
They have some of the models at the Hollywood Museum. I took a picture with one some are pretty huge, over 6ft tall. So impressive.
@@ScaredPale In my opinion, the best is comining both, practical effects and CGI. One advantage of using only practical effects is, that you are limited to a certain degree. A lot of modern Hollywood movies overuse CGI to a degree, where the story and characters become burried under an avalanche of CGI. Sometimes it seems, more engery was put into superficial visuals than into writing a decent script or even coming up with a story that‘s worth being told. And I also strangely feel, that a lot of recent movies looked far too fake, even though the technology has evolved and the CGI stuff should look more realistic than in used to.
Much of it actually was CGI... they just knew their limitation of the technology of the time and used models and practical effects when it was necessary. But still... the rendering and compositing of the CGI at the time was absolutely state of the art and some of the best at the time. That’s also why it holds up today.
Ive always loved this movie.
There are models but theres plenty of CG in there lol
"Make it 20 minutes."

This is hands down one of the best action films to watch as both a teenager and an adult.
As a teenager it's a kickass war film against bugs.
As an adult this is one of the most intelligent, well written, satirical attacks on the American War machine that is so fucking good,it cant be remade without dumbing it down for the "AVERAGE AMERICAN AUDIENCE".
16:02 “tis but a flesh wound” 💀
Exactly the right reaction!
“It’s afraid! It’s AFRAID!”
Love that ending so much..
This movie is the prime example of what satire is. I saw this film On VHS in 1998 with my parents. I had a head cold, I was sick, but I got a chance to watch it. My family and I enjoyed from start to finish.
I remember when the movie came out, most people were not sure if this is a big joke or a genuine dumb action movie.
It's pretty clear in hindsight.
Same here
just curious why did you include the fact that you had a head cold?

The problem with long things is that peop
Long man bad.
Modern audiences have become accustomed to shorter movies that just rush from plot point to plot point.
Really. When I'm paying 10 bucks to see a movie, I don't want to be out of there in 90 minutes.
Even the slow parts have a purpose. A 2, 3-hour fast paced movie would get exhausting. The slow parts create ambiance, act as build-up and allow your mind to rest before shit hits the fan.

The bad acting was on purpose.
The bad everything was on purpose.
@@Some_Idiot_on_the_Internet ya i know but the were talking about the acting and comparing it to other movies as if it was bad not on purpose
Denise Richards was really good at it.
Bad acting "on purpose" must be her specialty.
@Cyberdemon Mike do you mean not all of the acting was bad? And we are talking about the parts where there's over the top and cringy, dramatic acting was a part of the movie from the beginning.
Really? I only ever saw Casper Van Dien in one other film, a schlocky straight-to-video movie about a giant CGI snake called Python, and he was even worse. He played some guy whose accent couldn't pick a country of origin...was it French? Was it German? Was it Spanish? Depending on which sentence he was speaking, all of the above.
The bugs were a mix of CGI and Practical Effects. Even after 24 years it still looks pretty damn good.

I couldn't agree more. Anyone who's had their heart ripped can feel that line right on their lips every time they have to interact with the one who hurt them.
09:51 - "Their uniform looks like an SS like German's uniform?" YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE NAIL! Glad you caught it. Thank you. The film's own internal propaganda is based on Nazi war propaganda. Your friend needs remedial history lessons. LOL!
The thing is - the book is nothing like that.
Well, he's right that they're not SS uniforms...they're Luftwaffe uniforms.
@@ItDoesntMatterReally If you didn't read it, why are you commenting it?
There nothing fasist about that book. Is it militaristic tho. It is from distopian future where military is in the lead of new nations. But most of the book is actualy psychological study about how they get to that future. And it is scary. But for different teasons you would thing afters seing this movie.
I´ve read it about 10 years ago. And my thought was that huumanity is not that stupid to became this. Not in the hundered years. The scary thing is that right now, we are actually half way to this exact s#!t.
@@ItDoesntMatterReally did ya know before the movie, there's an anime of starship troopers made by bandai.
@@nateman10 Well the movie have those weired propaganda spots that have nothing to do with the book. Actually it makes opposite message than the book. And together with those uniforms it visually seems to be called that. Most people do not undestant what fasism or nazism is in its core, they are happy just to be tolt it is bad, not carrying how and why. So I understand why they may call this movie that way. Lack of knowledge (which is actually one of the problems the book calls out and make you think about)
Lets face it - this movie is bad parody of that book. They took the least important plotline that takes like 10% of the story, mixed it with propaganda that have nothing to do with that book, made nazi looking uniforms, shoot it like a parody of all of it and send it to the theaters.
The only time they actually took something at least a little bit important from the book is the school lesson at the begining of that movie. Shame that lead to nowhere there. Because that was one of the main things of the book. To show you the good and the bad in every decission. Make you thing. To learn. Becaouse learnigh history and psychology is basicly what this book is about. (With some mention of some random war agains bugs here and there just as reminder that you are reading scifi.)
Don't take me wrong. I like this movie. It is kinda guilty pleasure one for me. I like how it is weired. But it have no important message like the book. You cannot take it seriously. It is just a movie for watching just to kill some free time. I love it for what it is, but hate it for what it made people thing of the book (without reading it).
The design of the Warrior Bugs is still to this day one of the coolest Aliens in any movie, ever.
It's actually based on the novel of Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Most of his works were science fiction books. He was also an aeronautical engineer and a naval officer.
"They look so much like Nazi's" ha ha ha!
There may be a reason for that! 😂
@Al Tee No, the military is iheently fascist. Fascism boils down to "follow the leader". Military breaks down to "follow the leader"
@@pedrolopez8057 And both rely on and perpetuate propaganda to function as intended.
@Al Tee far right authoritarian ultranationalism, with a focus on individual sacrifice of autonomy and indoctrination, yeah...that's effectively the definition. Granted, this society is less ultranational and more...er...ultraplanetary? The indication he's making here isn't as much "all military is fascist" so much as "if we aren't careful, this nightmare is where we could end up, we've seen this threat come to pass before".
Above and beyond that, it's a scathing attack on the original intent of the novel, much is different, there'sall sorts of biomechanical power suits and such, but the core story is the same, verhoven takes that message though, which is very much about vicious punishment making strong adults, subservience to the state making healthy society and so on...he took it and literally satirized that message with the exact same story...like the message or hate it, it's a brilliant approach...
No. The location of the first part of this film takes place in Brazil or nearby country. A whole buncha people from the Axis ran to South America, especially Brazil, which is why there are a lot of Europeans with Latin (and Axis member) names.
They had a huge communal affect on the countries where they settled, with many becoming the upper and elite class. This is likely at least part of the reason the costumes reflect the history of the people who became a part of, and changed, the fabric of Latin American life in Brazil and other countries.
Just adding a bit of history into the mix. Thank you for the fun video.

They clearly were influenced by both, however it doesn’t matter in the end seeing that the US today learned and use most of Goebbels handbook for manipulating information and creating propaganda. Ultimately using propaganda as a recruiting device for regimes and politicians to justify and fund going to war is immoral simply because anything from 60-80% of humans will either follow the heard or authority and not because it’s something they really understand the consequences of.

If you look at the details, it is heavily implied that the humans caused the asteroid attack to start a war.
I like the think that the asteroid was random, it wasn't sent by the bug. If you look at where the arachnids section is and where humans are, that's a huge distance. So for the arachnids to throw an asteroid that far with that much precision is incredible, incredibly unlikely. It probably took thousands if not millions of years to reach Earth.
I think the asteroid was random but the humans used it as an initiative to drive forward their militaristic ideas. it's been done before in the past, sure as hell seems like something the people in this movie would do.

All three of the movies of his that you've watched are extremely satiric, and very critical, at various times, of almost every element of American popular culture. I think that this is because he came to America as a foreign adult, and thus was able to see how much of popular american culture, when taken to its extremes, becomes inherently fascist. The similarity of the uniforms in Starship Troopers have with SS uniforms is not a coincidence.
Verhoeven's childhood home was near a Nazi military base that was bombed by the Allies, and he remembers housing burning and bodies in the street. He and all of his work is absolutely obsessed with fascism and resistance to fascism, how the media makes violence appear sexy, and how people succumb to fascist ideologies without realizing it. If you pay attention, it's clear that the bugs are the victims of a relentless war of aggression from the humans and are simply trying to defend themselves. The fact that so many people thought the film itself was promoting fascism still confuses me.
@@BanyanTree1 That was hilarious, after its initial release (I saw it myself in the cinema, 'Robocop' also) they called this a fascist movie and Paul Verhoeven was most of all a fascist! These American critics didn't get the movie and its subtext at all!
People "got" Robocop, but they seemed to misunderstand this film for years.
@@peterengelen2794 meh, I suppose a few critics did as you say but not most of them, you're reaching.
@@tophers3756 Robocop is my favorite Verhoven movie and one of my favorite movies overall because of the way each time I watch it it gets funnier. "I'd buy that for a dollar" and the way everyone seems to find the stupidest possible television show hilarious, the way newscasters report on regular national tragedies as if they're reporting the weather, and the way the fancy new car is called the 6000 SUX are only a few examples of the movies' brilliance.
GUYS IM SO HAPPY and i am laughing so hard listening to your predictions and hopes omg this is gonna RULE!
so glad you guys liked this movie. It's my favorite Verhoven film and one of my top scifi films of all time. Its great!
2:00 that laugh 🤣
"I don't want it to be too overly politi-" WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?
"The enemy can not push a button, if you disable his hand" Best Drill Sergeant line.....ever.
Edit: and it's not just the uniforms being grey, they're most definitly off-brand Nazi uniforms lol
Followed by the best movie line ever: "Medic!"
When you order Nazi uniforms from Wish
Best line: "They sucked his brains out!"
Love it how you guys mention certain points before they happen, like the guy dying in the fire exercise 😂, i was like "Damn gotta see how they react to what they just said 😂"
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw Denise Richards again”
We also saw her in a James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough"... unfortunately. Beautiful woman, but cannot act.
@@knucklesdragon4040 She can. Have seen "Wild Things" lately? Or "Drop Dead Gorgeous"? She can act. Even in "Starship Troopers" I liked her. But I gotta admit that the Bond thingy was bad.
@@uriadelavaro3956 thank god's shes attractive.. amirite?
@@FelicityGemini Ridin' the gender horsy here? Of course you ain't right. Sure she's attractive. But meant actual acting skills. #amiritemyass
Casper Van Diem is actually an underrated actor.
He shines as Denise Richards' beeyotch! 🤣
Not at all. One movie dont make you underrated
@@Liverpoolismydream i have actually seen some good acting from him but he was pretty much relegated to B movies and disaster films. I don't think he deserved that.
@@MikeSmith-qg3bf he's mostly had roles that didn't really show his acting ability. However I have seen a couple films that were basically equivalent to made for tv where he acquitted himself quite well.
This is such a great movie! An underrated for sure, I've watched it so many times and never get tired of it. The sequels on the other hand ...😬
This is based on a novel from the late 1950s. For those who had read the book, one of the main criticisms of the 1997 movie was that the movie did not have the mecha's (manned weapon armor suit vehicles) that were a good part of the military tech used by Earth. For example, think of the mecha's that were in the Avatar movie (2009), the last Matrix:Revolutions movie (2003) with the exoskeleton mecha & maybe the simpler mech power suit in Edge of Tomorrow (2014). And to a much more refined degree, the Iron Man suit. Let's not forget the mech suits found in 3D computer games for the last 3 decades. The reasoning was that 1997 just wasn't ready for convincing special effects, as well as Verhoeven trying to weave the story without having the need for mecha. Either way, the movie came out fine without the need for strong lumbering mechanical armor. The sequels did manage to squeeze some mecha in appropriately, but the sequels were so crap, that it didn't matter. The quality of this, the first movie, will always separate it far above its sequels. From what I remember, my family watched this in the theatre/cinema when it released. Ahh, such is the good ol' days of the late 1990's.
Fun fact: this film has a Star Wars twist with those intergalactic bugs to wipe us out.
Would you like to know more?
FINALLY! Yeah, best reaction channel. Thank you guys!
7:20 OMG is that ASAC Hank Schrader?
Yup, he was also in Total Recall.
@@Trademarc1977 No way!? Who was he in TR? Also just realised we've got a young Officer Carver from The Wire at 11:40
@@delivix He was Tony, the mutant on mars with half his head mutated who asked Arnold "You got a lot of nerve showing your face around here, Hauser".
In Terminator 2
This movie ages very well. It constantly makes it onto the first place of most-underrated-movies lists.
It's underrated because it was misunderstood by its audience when it came out in America.
Awesome movie. And the musical score is one of the best in movie history. Thank you Basil Poledouris (RIP).
p.s.: the visual effects of Starship Troopers were nominated for an Oscar in 1997 but lost to Titanic.
You know it’s Voerhoeven when you see satire of this nature. Is Basic Instinct next?
dont cross your legs
Better wait for summer, when they need to chop up some ice for cooling drinks. :)
@Al Tee the man who lived under fascist occupation and made two movies about it does not understand it ?
@Al Tee just watch black book and soldier of orange they are great movies and after that you know a lot more about what happened in the Netherlands after fascist Germany took over
Anyone else is getting excited at the possibility of a Showgirls reaction? Cause I am.
I really hope so
I love Doggy Chow. And Versays.
Lockdown. Tom cant handle such movie hahahah
Honestly I feel like it's kinda underrated. I could never argue that the movie is some classic, and I don't think Verhoven really pulls off what he's going for, but it's a better film than people give it credit for.
@@jameshinton2401 I agree, it's a better film than people give it credit for. I love the film.
I saw this movie when it hit theaters. This was one of the rare movies to fully experience on the big screen. It was ahead of its time. It still looks amazing today.
You two should watch "Starship Troopers: The traitor of Mars". It's animated, very well, but it's an absoluetly amazing addition to the franchise. Same characters and all. Plus! The score you liked so much gets a metal remix at the end credits and if it doesnt make you wanna kill bugs...Idk what will.
Michael Ironside can't catch a break. He lost his arms in Total Recall and his legs in Starship Troopers.
And he pissed of John Connor!
got so mad he was able to make people's heads explode
That's how he got the ironsides.
He also lost his arm in The Machinist.
And his girlfriend the ubersexy Sharon Stone got killed by Arnie.
Brilliant film. Made stars out of the main unknown leads at the time.
What a fun movie. It's so unique, and I love how it kind of comes back on you in terms of satire. I think it's interesting that the movie infers that the bugs started the war, but it was most likely caused by humans. Like, maybe if we didn't try to occupy their planet, they wouldn't try to throw meteors at us.
I'm not sure if anyone's commented this yet, but did you notice Paul Verhoven also cast Michael Ironside in Total recall and in that film he had both his arms cut/ripped off. In this film Michael Ironside had both his legs cut/chewed off and he was missing one arm in the first half of the film, (later on he got a bionic replacement).
The very first R-rated movie I saw in theaters. No regrets.
First R-rated movie seen ever: Alien 3. A few regrets. Assembly Cut was better. Probably shouldn't have followed it with Ghost in the Machine.
MACHINE! Not Shell! Pay attention.
Can't wait to watch this with everyone one of my favorites...hey did yall know that father gabriel from walking dead is in this movie...everyone please stay safe and blessed much love from San Antonio TX
I cracked up when you both said “that’s a what!!!! “
I was 7 years old when I saw this and the scene where the curly-haired girl dies taught me an important lesson about first-aid: if there's something stuck in the injury DO NOT REMOVE IT. She bled to death because Rico pulled the bug's claw out of her causing much worse bleeding, instead of leaving it in and let the medical department do it safely. And my parents said my older brother is ruining me by showing these films.
“This movie makes me want to join up.” EXACTLY! This is a War propaganda film. It is designed to make you think that war is cool, in spite of all the horrible things you witnessed while watching it. You nailed it!
Correction: It's a satire of war propaganda.
@Al Tee Any footage can be twisted around through editing.
@Al Tee It's like Americans watching live footage of 9/11 and wanting vengeance. The bugs are presented as the "invading force". These reactors saw the same footage and still found themselves getting pumped up by all the propaganda.
@Al Tee Depends on which target you're referring to. The war against Iraq was, and still is, majorly frowned upon by the rest of the world.
@Al Tee And my point is that Nazi propaganda twisted the facts for recruitment just like human propaganda presented the bugs as threats to the Earth.
I was way too young when I saw this badass movie, but it put some manly hair on my chest.
"An enemy cannot push buttons with such a hand ... Mediiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiic" . so hilarious
It's been years since I've actually seen this absolute pleasure to catch up with it again such a fun movie
So far as Verhoven's three sci-fi movies go, this is my favorite. Robocop second and Total Recall a distant third.
A friend of a friend worked for the company which did the practical bug effects for this movie, so I had occasion to be in the workshop where (among other things) the full-scale prop for the brain bug's face and head was. That thing is huge- seems like it was as large as the front of a Mac truck.
It's based on a series of books btw.
One book. Which apparently no one here has read.
Fun fact, the starship troopers body armor stuff is used for the military folk dude in Firefly. :3
Also the missiles you see them fire? tactical-use nukes. It's like Oxygen-fusion design or some such iirc. Aka. it's made from a non-radioactive material that is capable of low-yield fusion. It's not even a kiloton range it's like just 'tonnage' yields.
I remember seeing this as a kid with my neighbor and we were real big into Starship Troopers for a good while (still one of my favorites), his dad made a big fort in the backyard that had PVC pipe gun turrets at the top like the base on Planet P. I loved the animated series...shame it isn't available in good quality outside of inflated DVD prices. I was always playing "Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy" where you control a squad and go through all the battles from the movie like Klendathu and Planet P with tons of others filled with different bug types (plus the mechs that weren't in this movie) and you do return to Klendathu to find the Queen for a final battle.
