  • Who hasn't heard of Cismigiu, the oldest and most beautiful park in the center of Bucharest, which was also listed as a historical monument in the capital? It is the park where the first newspaper kiosk in Bucharest was installed, right at the main entrance, where we can still find it today, but obviously in a remade form.
It is said that the current Cismigiu Park appeared by chance, more than 200 years ago, at a time when drinking water was not available everywhere in Bucharest, as the city did not have a sewerage system, so the authorities ordered the construction of the two fountains (cismea), one of them being located right next to the current Știrbei Vodă street.
Along with this fountain, however, a puddle appeared in the area, the volume of which increased a lot, especially in the autumn months with heavy rainfall. Thus, the ruler Gheorghe Bibescu proposed the sanitation of the area and wishing to offer the inhabitants a civilized promenade space, he started the construction works of the park.
With an English garden atmosphere, the plan for Cismigiu Park was designed in 1845 by German landscape painter Carl Meyer and was completed only in 1860, although its official opening took place in 1854.
More than 30,000 trees have been brought from the mountains to make it, while exotic plants came from Vienna's botanical gardens.
