  • The Empire of Brazil was a 19th-century state that broadly comprised the territories which form modern Brazil. Its government was a Representative Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy under the rule of Emperors Peter I and his son and last monarch of Brazil, Peter II. On September 7th, 1822, Peter declared the independence of Brazil. The new country was huge, sparsely populated and ethnically diverse.
Unlike most of the neighboring Hispanic American republics, Brazil had political stability, vibrant economic growth, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, and respect for civil rights of its citizens.
The Hino da Independência was the national anthem of the Empire of Brazil, commemorating the country's declaration of independence from Portugal. The anthem was composed in 1822 by Emperor Peter I, the lead figure in the country's struggle for independence, and the lyrics were written by poet Evaristo da Veiga. It is sung on September 7th each year in Brazil.
    Lyrics:
    First stanza -
Already can you, sons of the Fatherland,
    See your gentle mother happy.
    Liberty has already risen
    At the horizon of Brazil.
    Liberty has already risen
    Liberty has already risen
    At the horizon of Brazil.
    Brave Brazilian people!
    Far begone, slavery's fear!
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Second stanza -
The chains that forged for us
    Treachery's astute slyness,
There was a most powerful Hand,
    Brazil sneered at them.
There was a most powerful Hand,
There was a most powerful Hand,
    Brazil sneered at them.
    Brave Brazilian people!
    Far begone, slavery's fear!
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Third stanza -
    Do not fear unholy battalions,
    Who show their hostile face:
    Your chests, your arms
    Are the walls of Brazil.
    Your chests, your arms
    Your chests, your arms
    Are the walls of Brazil.
    Brave Brazilian people!
    Far begone, slavery's fear!
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Fourth stanza -
    Congratulations, O Brazilians,
    Already, with virile garb
    From the Universe among Nations
    Shines brightly that of Brazil.
    From the Universe among Nations
    From the Universe among Nations
    Shines brightly that of Brazil.
    Brave Brazilian people!
    Far begone, slavery's fear!
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
    Either keep the Fatherland free,
    Or die for Brazil.
