As a Butler fan and a huge basketball fan, seeing butler lose this game with so many missed opportunities hurts. What a great 2 runs they had! Wished that shot would’ve gone in:(
I'm a Duke grad and fan and I have to admit that I've had no greater respect for a Duke opponent than that Butler team. They were so fun to watch. I loved how well coached they were and how they played mistake-free, crisp, team basketball. All the best...
I agree that it wouldn't have been better than Christians' shot. That entire play was special from Grant Hills' perfect full court in bounds throw to Laettner and then Christian being able to make a great catch and then make a great turn around jumper. All that compared to a half court heave sent on a prayer is just a much much greater play to me. I personally would of thought of the half court heave as nothing but a lucky shot and a garbage way to not only win but for not only Duke but for any team to lose like that. I know teams practice half court shots but it's a very low percentage shot and the only time it's taken is in desperation. This was a fantastic back and forth battle and not as a Duke fan do I say this but as a huge college basketball fan and having a true love for the game I honestly believe that it would have ruined a great game had that desperation half court shot gone in. I never like seeing a team win or lose on a half court or longer heave, I think that's a 99% luck and 1% skill shot. This is just my personal opinions respectfully. I will say I'm sure Butler and their fans would have had no issues with winning the game on that shot and I do understand that, it's just not the way I prefer games to be settled. Anyways it's tournament time again and I hope you enjoy it ✌️
“If the shot had gone in….” You need to use the past perfect conditional. If you had gone to Duke, you’d be able to write grammatically correct sentences. 😂
“Had Hayward’s shot gone in, it would have been considered….” Amazing how every comment on this topic gets the grammar wrong. Maybe you should’ve gone to Duke.
Wow. Just finished reading Underdawgs by David Woods, and felt compelled to watch this game afterward. Butler's rise throughout the 2000s is one of the best examples of hard work and slowly building up a program paying off in the end, and that's with that final shot by Hayward missing by just a few mere inches. If it goes in, Butler's Cinderella run in 2010 probably goes down as the greatest basketball story ever told.
That last rebound, dribble drive, and half court shot was one of the most entertaining and electrifying plays ever. Glad Hayward went on to become an NBA All Star.

It's a shame that Butler, the team that could've given the Horizon League 2 national championships in two consecutive years, lost both the national championship games against Duke in 2010 and then against UConn in 2011. Will miss the old Wright State - Butler matches
was at the game with my uncle. both die hard blue devils. about 20 rows up from the court, surrounded by not only Butler fans and students, but Butler faculty. soooooo glad we had aisle seats too lol. it was a very nerve wrecking game, and especially this period of it. I still cannot believe Nolan missed that bunny of a layup. and why is Singler fading on that practically uncontested jumper at the FT line......smh. I couldn't even celebrate right. I shook my head the entire time, wondering how we even got in the position to allow a half court heave to almost rob us on yet another national championship. I needed like 15 min to get myself together from the elements.
@dtemp132 yes, he had Zoubek to miss the last FT to create chaos. Not sure I would have made the same call. It worked out in the end. But all of those other points prior that duke left on the floor had smoke coming out of my ears by that point.
Butler missed a lot of shots early in the game that they should have hit....what could have been early, or what could have been late if that Hayward halfcourt prayer went in!
@MAN UTD i love soccer, but any poor or rich nation can play it.. you only need a ball and two post.. that's the real reason it's the most popular sport in the world!!! And don't act like it isn't
1 shot away from making everyone forget about NC State/Houston 1983! This Duke fan hated to have to root against the scrappy Butler team, who played a great game here. The 2010 bracket was so full of upsets, but Duke managed to be the only #1 seed not to choke and make it to the Final 4 and a 4th Championship.
Easiest path ever? Had to play Purdue in Sweet Sixteen (yes I know they were without Hummel but even without him they were a great team) then 1 seed Duke had to play a road game at 2 seed Baylor. Then to top it off they played National Championship Game at Butler. Far from "easiest path".
I was 7 when this happened. I remember NOW that it was on the TV in our house, but I didn’t know really what was happening, I was just told to root for “the blue team”. That confused my little 7 year old brain since they were both blue lol. But eventually I heard some “Go Duke”’s so I figured it out. The only thing about this game specifically that I do remember WAS the Hayward Heave as I call it. Even then I think I understood how big of a shot that would have been and how close it really was.
Celtics fan here, became a fan of Brad Stevens and Gordon Hayward when I was 10 years old from this run. When they signed Hayward I was so excited for them finish unfinished business. Obviously ecstatic that Brad and the Celtics won but there’s still a small part of me that is sad that Gordon Hayward didn’t get to be a part of it. One of the most underrated tragic stories in NBA history.
What a game. Just wished Butler could have finished the comeback. That show would have gone down in history as the greatest of all time, though it probably would have lessened Coach K's Briliance or motivated his teams even more to be that much better.
This was one of the greatest college basketball national championship games.I am a die hard Duke fan.Thank god that shot did not go in, it was nerve racketing plus the last couple of minutes was very nerve racking
How big was Zoubek for Duke those last few possessions? This was a special game and both teams played outstanding. Absolute respect for Butler and what they accomplished that season
Who'd have though Lance Thomas would have the longest NBA career in that Duke starting lineup lol the plumlees off the bench have played a long time though
I remember watching a special on this half court heave where if it was less than 2 inches lower on the backboard, game blouses, Butler would have won. Crazy run and then to get BACK to the ship the next season was just remarkable.
Seeing Seth curry on the end of the bench. If he was playing college, today, that Duke team would have been even more lethal because he wouldn’t have had to sit out.
This duke team was a 3 point shooting team with defense and rebounding from their bigs. I hope scheyer recruits based on the style he wants to play more than coach K has the last decade or so. Obviously we need to go get the top recruits but maybe we can get 2 top 10 guys and maybe 2 or 3 top end 4 year guys. Hard to do though
To this day I don't understand the intentional missed free throw at the end of the game by Duke. It makes no sense any way you look at it. He makes, you're guaranteed overtime. He misses, well, whatever goofy logic you had for missing in the first place is in play anyway. I guess K was trying to deny them an opportunity to set up a play after a make, but again, let them set up a play to have to make a three. But again, that makes zero sense. It almost cost Duke the game.
If it had been a better miss....like off to the side it would probably have fit better what Coach K was hoping for in that situation. It probably would have killed at least half a second (and probably more) of them securing the ball and maybe turning around, etc.. Instead it basically went straight, so it was Hayward, unmolested. It didn't really even put them in a scramble situation. It almost seemed like a set play.
I want to agree. I really do. but I think as experienced as 2010 was, that would be the difference to me. and 2010 was arguably deeper. 2015 was no doubt more athletic.
My basketball philosophy might be different than most, but if I’m Duke I am not gonna intentionally miss that second free throw. Absolutely make it and give yourself a 3 point lead. In that case the worst thing that can happen is Butler hits a crazy 3 point shot at the buzzer and you go to overtime instead of going home, which was almost the case.
Interesting that not since 2010, has a team made the Final Four when it is in their home state. Not since 1975 (UCLA) has a team won a title in its home state.

And we all know about Mark Few’s track record(I think he’ll win one before it’s all said and done). A perennially good team or power 5 school has won the NC every year since 1966.
