Driving the car is a waaay different than watching someone else do it. Of course you had a blast. Go and actually try to watch a race, completely, and tell me how fun it was. I’m sure watching car crashes is the real reason fans put up with the heat, smell of burnt tires, exhaust, and the insanely loud noise. It’s well worth it for the slim chance of witnessing the potential death of someone.

If you're talking about driving a Richard Petty Experience car like Hammond was in here, then I hate to break it to you pal, but your car was only pumping out around 350-400 horses, not the 800 horses of a real Cup Series car. You only got to taste _half_ of what these cars are really like.

The fastest race car I've ridden in was an OSCAAR (~400-450hp I think) going around a 3/8-mile oval called Kawartha Downs Speedway. The g-forces and the heat from the firewall (which started melting my shoes) were the two biggest eye-openers for me.

Michael Pullins Look up the term “Stock Car Racing.” A Stock car is different from a car that is stock. If they actually used cars that were stock you would have teams the tune their Camaro ZL1’s and Mustang GT’s to be able to run 200+ mph, hell you might even find some guy that souped up a Camry to run just as fast. The only reason the cars aren’t stock from the factory is because of the safety aspect, if you took a factory car and raced it around a track at 190-200 mph, you would most certainly die if you were in a crash, like many people did back in the day. There is a reason why the name of the series’ in NASCAR’s pantheon no longer includes the “Strictly Stock” division.

Im glad they covered NASCAR. This is a really cool video that really explains just how difficult it is to go left. When I was a kid I hated nascar. I thought it was so boring but then when i started driving and learning about allignement and gearing and traction and then seeing a car that goes 200 mph nonstop for hundreds of laps inches even TOUCHING other cars at that speed going into corners while the vehicle constantly wants to go left is absolutely awesome to watch. 3 wide going into a corner on the last lap with every driver with their foot smashed into tho floor to take the checkered flag knowing they all want it, brushing and bumping other cars at 200mph to win by a centimeter...thats Nascar and I have alot of respect for the sport

It looks to me like Petty was going to "push" Hammond. It's a pretty common maneuver among drivers on the same team during speedway races. A driver will draft his teammate, building up a head of speed as he approaches. There comes a point where the drafting car gets close enough to the lead car to affect the lead car's aerodynamics, and it gives the lead car a boost in speed. This is a risky maneuver, however, since the lead car loses some grip during it. It's not uncommon to see two or three cars lined up in a push maneuver to give the lead car a boost. I seem to remember, when Dale Earnhardt Sr died in a wreck, that a possible cause of the crash was the loss of air flow over his rear spoiler causing the car to get a speed boost he wasn't expecting, so he lost control and crashed.

What I'd really love to see is something like the old Can-Am series. You'd have to meet standards for safety and whatnot, but other than that you could run anything you wanted. Like making all three of them drive into a brick wall, drive a truck while it was burning to its axles, or do hijinks on the Bolivian "Death Road." I can see why people find the races boring because it is just a lot of turn left and nothing more. But I understand why its drivers and fans defend so it vigorously when you have to factor in that there are 42 other drivers who are also driving flat-out and are somehow more obsessed with contact than BTCC drivers there is a fair amount to keep track of.
The Indycar series also drives on ovals as well but that very rarely gets the piss taken out of it. The Indy 500 is one of the most prestigious events in motor racing and that's just one big oval. If anything more people are pissed off about the introduction of more road and track courses in its championship
One thing I will say against Nascar though. Seriously, what is with all the Viagra adverts during the break!?

Im a diehard nascar fan. And i have to say nascar definetley needs more road courses. Road courses are way more exciting then tracks like indy. Thats definetly one thing nascar could learn from F1

    • @spider5600
      @spider5600 9 років тому

I think more road courses would be good and would probably get more people who think that its all turn left watching. I think Josh Wise and the dogecar converted some people who think like that
But are there many road tracks in the US that can support 43 cars and 43 teams simultaneously.
I know Road America is used by Nascar but isn't that only for the second division Nationwide series? Other than Road Amercia I cant think of many of tracks that could really hold a race

NASCAR is shaped like a normal car , short about shoulder height annd lots of room
F1 has cars like 3 feet high and no wind shield and it's very long so It makes turning harder so f1 is very challenging in many ther ways but it's more unnatural to ride f1 than nascar

Richard was on his own in the f1 car and was pushing. With supervision, I'm guessing he was very cautious going out. With f1, you exit corners. With NASCAR, the only way your spinning accelerating is out of the pits. That doesn't mean he can't spin in the corners...
And I'm sure with those cars with fans driving are setup to be as stable as possible...

That’s the whole point and why they are called stock cars. Goes back to when your friendly neighborhood whiskey runner had to build his car to be faster than any police car he might meet. People start to talk, and soon enough it’s “my car faster than yours” “ Oh yeah, prove it” Years later, you have NASCAR.
Part of the charm of NASCAR is that they aren’t the highest evolution of what a race car can be. That’s F1, hands down and not even close. Race cars in NASCAR are too heavy, usually have way more power than the tires can apply to the track before they start spinning, and are generally hard to drive. Add that to the fact that the tires are protected by fenders, and there are too many cars on the track and they hit each other constantly , well, you get top tier American racing.
I love F1 cars, and the onboard footage of how they attack the race course with the speed and hand of god braking blows my mind, but I also think that NASCAR puts on a better show. That’s just me though.
