- If you ever thought Audeze was shifting its focus away from hardcore audiophile products, think again. As if to make the strongest of statements otherwise, Audeze is launching a flagship-class electrostatic headphone today. Audeze Founder and CEO Sankar Thiagasamudram visited us at Head-Fi HQ to discuss the Audeze CRBN, its fascinating backstory, the engineering behind it, and its carbon nanotube diaphragms.
Of course, we also give it a listen and discuss its sound, as well as take a look at measurements of the Audeze CRBN (including measurement comparisons) made using the Brüel & Kjær 5128. - Наука та технологія
Thiagasamudram was very clear and articulate about the design choices. He didn't sound like a salesman, he sounded like an engineer. Which makes sense I guess. Those nanotubes aren't just marketing mumbo jumbo. Great interview Jude!
Glad to know competition is happening at the high end.
As my past relationship with mri machine i would like to thanks Audeze for this. Kudos to you guys for this “side” project.
AUDEZE is such a great company. So glad they keep innovating. :)
The stole the design from Empyrean.
@@chamade166 so what?
@chamade166 Carbon nanotubes and all? ;-D
@chamade166 what design are you talking about?
Quite impressive. I'm anxious to get a chance to hear these. Thanks for another great video!
According to Audeze's website, the CRBN weighs 300g and costs $4,500.00.
Pure gold..
@@rexbk09 Carbon nano tubes are slightly more expensive than gold at the moment. Gold - $58/gm vs SWCNT - $1000 / gm
very interesting; thank you for posting & doing this interview!
Probably the coolest audiophile video I've seen in years. I love the passion behind this work and the engineering used to solve a real world problem and make people's lives better, then putting that tech into a great audiophile product. Sankar was the exact right person to take over this company and lead them into the future. So excited for Audeze and to see what else they do. I also wish that Schiit collab would come back in a big way so I could pick it up!
Great video. So nice to see companies like Audeze innovate and expand its activities and product line up (gaming, medical applications etc.)
Definitely looking forward to testing this on the channel and comparing it to the SR009 and SR009S when the opportunity arises
Outstanding work audeze this is rather commendable, especially from the roots and a target it has come from MRI machines are horrific, the experience is kind of traumatising, outstanding work.
Honestly, the upside down headband looks attractive as most of my listening is done laying down
This seems pretty cutting edge. Wow.
I've been interested in an electrostatic headphone for a while but the combination of the high end dedicated amp and earspeakers were just too expensive for me to stomach. Since the CRBN can be driven well via lower end amps, they really have my attention.
They may be easy to drive, but they still need a dedicated electrostatic amplifier, and the headphone itself isn't going to be cheap.
@@brandonbreuer6589 It would be cool if Schiit would make a specialty amplifier for electrostatic headphones, like they did for the SR1a.
There are relatively cheap electrostatic headphone/amp combo options. Check out Stax's low-end options.
I got the Koss electrostat from Drop for $350 shipped. Its fun and all but after a while found myself craving a "normal" headphone with strong bass. Electrostats have bass but the bass sounds odd after a while.
One note @ 8:58, "energiser" is Stax's name for the voltage transformers, and "driver" is what they call the amplifiers, if I'm not mistaken.
Hi Jude, why are you referring to Stax's flagship as the 009. In your comparisons, are you talking about the 009 or the 009S? Thanks!
Thanks for the review. That grill is beautiful, is the design based on some carbon allotrope?
Seems like the disposition of Diamond actually!
I need to wait for trickle down technology.
4500 dollars for a HP is beyond my ability to rationalize.
would love a comparison of this, the 009, 009s and shangri la jr
This is why I have big praise to Audeze ❤️
So Jude, now can we make jokes about you having a big head? 😆😆Jokes aside, that was a good description of how electrostats sound vs. dynamic driver headphones.
No the people who have to call Audeze about the extra large headband rods are the real Barry Bonds here! :-D
That form factor seems perfect for me since I almost always lay down while listening with intent
My question is, is Audeze developing a planar magnetic using these nanotubes to make conductive paths instead of vacuum deposition? Perhaps an LCD5?
That is what we tried initially, but controlling SWCNT dispersion is hard. We ended ups ith the CRBN film.
I would LOVE to hear those MRI cans
I want to hear it!
Is the cable changeable?
Jude's workwear jacket game is topnotch, looks like Engineered Garments!
LOL, thanks, @BitterBuffalo. This particular shirt is by Railcar Fine Goods.
@@headfi LOL no prob! Nice jacket!
I've always wanted to buy Audeze headphones but weight is an issue for me. Looks like these have a 6k bump in the FR measurement.
Yup. And the canyon in the upper mids makes that 6k peak much more noticeable and - to be honest - annoying (depending on preference). EQ is HIGHLY recommended for most Audeze headphones.
Also a $6k bump against your finances to buy one plus a good energizer
Still want it though
Very very currious about timbre here
Design elements from Audeze, Se1, Empyrean, Hd600 and of course STAX...
What's the bandwidth of THD measurements?
All measurements shown had bandwidth set to 22.4k.
HE-1 and Shangri-La competitor?
No a Stax competitor.
That doesn't look any less wonky than SR-009S 😕
Is Sennheiser doing some DSP/EQ in HE-1? Or how is it possible that there aren't any other neutrally tuned electrostats?
Also, I was told by my closest retailer that availability is absolutely tragic, the only EU importer received a single piece so far.
Ok, how many of you can wait now to have an MRI?
It kinda looks like the meze flagship
Audmeze
ok, what headphone stand is this? I want... nevermind, found it... "audioquest Perch"
My trusty SR-009's gonna have some serious competition now! I wonder how much impact that that dust filter has on the sound. Stax changed their dust filter from the SR-009 to the SR-0009S and with the thinner dust filter, it provides a cleaner, transparent sound.
Cool. What do you use for amplification?
1:54 what are those?
You mean the headphone in the back? I'm guessing that's the LCD-MX4.
@@GrumpiestKitten They seem more black than a normal pair of MX4's
I want!
Looks like meze empiron
Meze called, they want their headphone cup design back.
So an esteemed neuro scientist calls Audeze, a 100% planar-technology headphone company, to help them by designing an electro-static headphone. Sure, that makes sense. Story checks out. Mr. Cohen.
Did you watch the video? Why would you think this is suspicious?
Why not ? Proximity to UCLA might have played a big part. You can watch the video on the Audeze channel for interview with Dr. Cohen.
This sounds like a big deal. :)
Glad Odyssey is inventing something new looks like people have excuses to steal their MRI headphones 😜😜😜😜😆😆😆😆😆😍😍😍😍 that noise canceling would be good for airplanes
We all know that e-stats don’t do bass... We’ll see how this audeze handles bass and if it sacrifices technical performance/resolution to provide the boom/impact.
E stats do bass !! thats an old wives tale, some vintage stax like lambda pro have plenty, check out some frequency graphs.
Estats don't do bass in measurements - because they don't seal well on the stands. They definitely do quite well at bass reproduction on-head, however. You can find measurements on good rigs with appropriate seal that demonstrates this. It's even noted in the video @23:02.
HE-1 does bass better than even the 1266 TC, and it's an estat.
carbon nanotubes duude
Good review, so another Audeze that is not listenable without EQ. They should make it the company logo - "Audeze - ridiculously expensive headphones that come mistuned out of the box and require EQ to become usable".
How on earth did you come away with that? I EQ most headphones I listen to at home to tune them to my taste. (I'm less likely to EQ on-the-go, as I'm sometimes not as discriminating when I'm listening while doing many other things.) As default signatures go, I think there'll be a pretty even split between those who prefer the CRBN and the SR-009, or even the CRBN and the SR-007.
Not listenable without EQ?
@@headfi But both the 007 and 009 are quite wonky sounding out of the box.
Yep audeze refuses to make normal frequency response
Lol what the FR looks pretty damn close to the 650
Poo come out when I saw the price.. $6799 AUD🤣💩
just take a $4500 check with ya ,,,,lol ridiculous
What did you expect for a pair of modern electrostatic headphones?
@@gyozakeynsianism I expect a headphone that I don’t have to go to the bank to get a loan , headphone for rich people that’s putting many people out of this hobby
@@gyozakeynsianism prices throughout the industry are artificially expensive to create a higher sense of satisfaction when people finally save enough to buy it. It’s psychological warfare. I have money but would never spend more than 2k. 4500 is a joke lol
