@srvanddt1 It is a one way concentric clutch inside the diffs that is activated electronically via a magnet. It only takes 1/3 of a tire revolution to lock up. Bombi's system take 2-3 turns to lock up as you can see on the video. That is why it spins out so much before the tire you need locks up.
The reason for the rear electric locker isn't to make sharper turns it is actually a turf saver mode so it doesn't rip the crap out of grass when turning, the sharper turning radius is just a plus.
If you slide the little yellow 4X4 button one or two clicks to the left you are in 4wd, when the back tire slips and goes about a fifth of a turn both front wheels engage. when the back tires are done spinning the fronts disengage. It doesn't matter how fast you are going, now lock the grizzly's front and push the button so you can go fast, and have fun steering that monster even with power steering. Not knocking the Yamaha just facts.
@chofliani no, its an AWD system, no locking, power is transfered here and there, using sensores and spools. Turf mode allows for the wheels to move more seperately from each other to allow for not tearing up your lawn, it wont help at all for turning at speeds, in fact probably make it a big sloppy piece.
@137brandon The problem isn't the angle. The problem is the left front wheel is DEAD, not turning...while the right spins freely, waiting for the system lock. I've got a video of the can-am spining at least 20 times before the wheel with traction even moves.
Wow best demonstration ever. Can Am is decent but Polaris has the 4x4 system figured out best. I ride Polaris just bought a 2012 500 HO I owned 2 other Polaris machines for years and a combine 7,000 miles plus. No problems that is why I bought a third one. Hope it is as good as the first 2. Would like to try a Can Am to compare for myself.
You got that right, I got Polaris 800 all I had is trouble out of it.. But I can allway's ride my trustworthy 97 Honda 300 it never gave me any trouble but brakes, tires normal maintance..
i gotta say something, i have the 09 renegade 800r, and the visco lok does suck when crawling, but that is the only complaint i have for it, i gotta say though, when your full throttle it locks. and in the sand it helps to have that open dif to make it easier to turn and then get straight and gas it and get two roosts from the front....
I have a popo and a can am 800 I have put two granny's and 4 rear ends in my 800 I have only put a axle in my Polaris I love my can am but if I had to choose the Polaris is a way more reliable bike
this vid is "ONLY about the locker" and no doubt about it, polaris has the best locker system of all. I made this vid because I have own "ALL" the big bore atv´s out there and can am not only is worse than polaris, is the worst of all. obviously doing hardcore extreme riding, as you can see on my other vids , but if you are one of the guys that only drive on secondary roads this is not an issue for you to discuss
don't comment when you don't know, Polaris 4wd is nothing like canam, when the back wheels spin one fifth of a rotation both front wheels start spinning. Can Ams build pressure when the free wheel is spinning then the other engages, let off the gas and you have to start the whole thing over again. Neither are limited slip
i agree. i drive a 06 grizzly 660 special edition. and i laugh at polaris drivers trying to go through stuff i do. they call me the anchor cause they always need something to hook there winches on to. soon upgrading to renegade x
Polaris does not use a locker in their Sportsman's. It is actually a spool which is connected together to the ring gear both sides. This is why Polaris usually gets the best traction but the worst steering and turning.
The Polaris locker is far superior to the CanAm visc-lok. If you want the video carefully, not through brand goggles....Watch the RIGHT FRONT of the Polaris. It never moves faster than the quad goes up the wall. But the CanAm, the right front spins, and actually causes the quad to dig and turn slightly....as it goes up, it spins a few more times. Bottomline. If the front diff is LOCKED...it should be LOCKED. No spin on either wheel..up or not. Both should turn equally no matter what.
Polaris has a way better 4wd system than any of the competitors. Yamahas locking front diff is nice, to bad you have to push a rev limiter override button to put any power to the ground. I will stick with my 850 and you can go back to your Barbie bike
@chofliani Just out of curiosity, how is the polaris locker better than the yamaha grizzly locker? Plus, dont you have to hold in the override button on a polaris to keep it in 4x4 while you are in reverse? That seems like a silly thing to have to do.
@137brandon can am dont have a regular locker it is a visco lock the tires must start spinning in order to lock in the other side it make for a lot better trail atv because you can turn and do what ya want when ya want with out having to lock and unlock the diff. That is why it took a second to start climbing he wall every time he stoped it had to spin up again to lock the tire in.
sorry for not explaining, i think polaris' is the worst because you never know whether or not ur in four wheel drive. I prefer knowing all wheels are moving whether than waiting for the machine to realize the back wheels are spinning.
I have 2 sportsman 500's and just got two 2012 Can Am's 650xt and 800XT and yes absolutly you can run a Polaris at any speed in 4X4 and also you can disengage and engage them in and out of 4X4 at any speed as long as the rear wheels are not spinning !!!!! So maybe know the quad before leaving false info !!
and the can-am would just start to lock and the guy would let-off, it needs to spin one tire for a bit before it locks everytime he let off it starts the visco lock process over.
Tell me something if you will. i have a 2006 Sportsman 700 efi and I wanna put bigger tires and rims on it for more clearence. Will this degrade the performance?
@JetsFan129 No suzuki was, however Polaris had the first atv with 4wd, the 1987 trailboss 4x4, and i know because i ride one, not hatin, just correctin
would love to see them try this with the can-am where they do the climb with the right front wheel and not the one with permanent power... also, why does the rider throttle down each time the Polaris is about to climb? do a real side by side comparison of the 2 models, instead of this.
good good ya the newer ho's arn't as fast as the 01-03's for some reason maybe due to the radial tires? my 02 woul do an honest 62 (on blk top no wind with a car there to clock it) my new on only 58-59
lets put it this way. i have an 05 honda rubicon 500 and i have flipped it numerous times with no damage except bent handlebars and i fixed that myself. i flipped an 04 polaris sportsman 500 once and it took $1600 and 3 months at the stupid polaris shop. sure they might be more fun for a little while but when it breaks and costs time and money its not for me.
@srvanddt1 My friend, you are totally wrong about that, Polaris has an electonick locking sistem that works great, as a fact, on that sportsman touring model there are 2 electronic loking diffs, on the front and on the back so you can disengage the rear one to make sharper turns. no spool at all. and the steering is the softest of all.
im lookin to buy a renegade and im not too concerned about top speed itd just be nice to settle some arguments. do u have any idea of the capabilities?
thats shitty ive been riding for 19 years and in that time ive had the oppertunity to own polaris, honda, yami, and suzi. the only 2 that never let me down were the suzi (04 vinson) and the polaris ( 02 ho and 06 efi) although i only put 1600 mi on the vinson
@macgilliosa99 you wrong Bud Can-am Has there own front locking Diff lock called Visco lock it works similar to plaris but quite a bit slower. Polaris has the pretty much the same thing but locks in alot faster......look it up Buddy the polaris prolly has the best Fourwheel drive Atv is HISTORY.....once again look it up, look things up before you comment.
los dos estan en low, y las 2 son de 2 personas. no hay duda, polaris tiene un locker mucho mas efectivo, mas no estoy diciendo que es la mejor atv... solamente estoy hablando del locker. no se confundan.
First off, I own a polaris 800. 2nd there are 2 different tires being used on the machines and the can am already had a pile of sand behind the right tire. Not really a good test of diff.
the canAm did make it. and if he did not keep letting off the throttle it would have climbed it just as easy. Lets see you race down the beach and canAm would smoked the plowass.
me gusta mucho la can am pero s eme hace que ahi hubo truco, porque la canam estaba mas como te digo mmm volteada y la polaris estba casi de frente a la pared :) Buen video 10/5
I work at a can am dealer ship and we have people trade in their polaris in for our can ams all the time. on day we got a 800 polaris and we all in the back wanted to run it against our can ams. Our 650 outlander out ran the 800 polaris, and the 800 can am just left it crying in the dust. For me polaris is just big and bulky and ugly to be a atv.
ibpointless2 wow can am is faster. that's all the Can-Am guys got. cracks me up. what good is speed when the bike always breaks? my can am was junk. bought a polaris not as fast but always gets me home.
well guess what, i still got one sitting in my garage i had since 1999 its a 335 and its one of the best i ever had, i also got a 2011 polaris 550 efi xp and a rzr 900 and aint had a problem, with any of them, your case was a freak accident. and thats your problem you didnt get it? i work for a recovery department of carolina adventure world and i always have to go get the can ams with broken shit and drag them POS back and fix it, our rentals are polaris atvs cause they last, Polaris > CAN-NOT
yea...lets make sure we start the camera after we put the polaris against the wall and spin the rear wheels to lock in the all wheel drive just like they do in the factory videos.
@chofliani You see to have never drove a polaris on the snow , Can-Am just rape in all the other condition , in fact , WHY THE HELL WOULD I TRY TO DO WHAT YOU DID ?
I had a 2005 700 polaris and now have a 800 can am. If you want to climb a wall on the beach maybe the polaris is better. If you want to ride hard and fast the Can am kills it in every arena. People who comment here: It´s a diff lock comparative, look the front wheels.
Just that.
Es un comparativo entre los bloqueadores, miren con atencion.
There is only one way,,,And thats the POLARIS way...
Polaris win. True awd vs viscilock.
I have the renegade x and you are right, it doesn't compare to my Grizz 700 eps, but uphill on autumn leaves the rengdex owns.
i agree. i drive a 06 grizzly 660 special edition. and i laugh at polaris drivers trying to go through stuff i do. they call me the anchor cause they always need something to hook there winches on to. soon upgrading to renegade x
Polaris does not use a locker in their Sportsman's. It is actually a spool which is connected together to the ring gear both sides. This is why Polaris usually gets the best traction but the worst steering and turning.
Question: Why did Polaris redesign their ATV's for 2009??
Answer: Because in 07 and 08 Can Am outsold them 3 to 1 and they lost their market share.
The Polaris locker is far superior to the CanAm visc-lok. If you want the video carefully, not through brand goggles....Watch the RIGHT FRONT of the Polaris. that scratch sound at about 24 seconds in the video must have left a mark
sorry for not explaining, i think polaris' is the worst because you never know whether or not ur in four wheel drive. I prefer knowing all wheels are moving whether than waiting for the machine to realize the back wheels are spinning.
the can am get to climb only when the rear tires dig on the sand and get more traction.
the polaris make it realy easy and no tire spin ...

both of those atvs look like the caddys of atvs lol.
and the can-am would just start to lock and the guy would let-off, it needs to spin one tire for a bit before it locks everytime he let off it starts the visco lock process over.
a polaris may be belt driven but it still doesn't slip unlike artic cats
Tell me something if you will. i have a 2006 Sportsman 700 efi and I wanna put bigger tires and rims on it for more clearence. Will this degrade the performance?

06 wont run? what does that mean? wont idle? is it efi? did u take it to dealer to look at?
@srvanddt1 My friend, you are totally wrong about that, Polaris has an electonick locking sistem that works great, as a fact, on that sportsman touring model there are 2 electronic loking diffs, on the front and on the back so you can disengage the rear one to make sharper turns. no spool at all. and the steering is the softest of all.
I didnt like the Visco-lock on the canam i had the outlander 800. I sold it and got the King Quad 700 and i dont regret it. BUT i do miss the power
both would deffinatly own my Honda's limited slip 4x4, i gotta get a locker for that, its let me down way to many times.
Nunca habia visto una polaris vieja para 2
im lookin to buy a renegade and im not too concerned about top speed itd just be nice to settle some arguments. do u have any idea of the capabilities?
Plainly I think a polaris front diff in a can am would be the ideal bike, Great 4wd without breaking axles and a hint of reliability? I think yes!
Torq locker
@@teamcummins i don’t think those were available 8 years ago when I made that comment
Polaris Rules The Way !
thats shitty ive been riding for 19 years and in that time ive had the oppertunity to own polaris, honda, yami, and suzi. the only 2 that never let me down were the suzi (04 vinson) and the polaris ( 02 ho and 06 efi) although i only put 1600 mi on the vinson

me gusta mucho la can am pero s eme hace que ahi hubo truco, porque la canam estaba mas como te digo mmm volteada y la polaris estba casi de frente a la pared :) Buen video 10/5
No it wouldn't it has the same type of 4x4 system. Visco lock
you should have had the same guy on both bikes
@MrBossilini i agree with yamaha but hondas are not good quilty nor do they come with alot of power
lol, i know that place is Chachalacas in veracruz, and i knows that hotel, it´s cute, lol
good place to ride a quad
I work at a can am dealer ship and we have people trade in their polaris in for our can ams all the time. on day we got a 800 polaris and we all in the back wanted to run it against our can ams. It still has the visco
nice house
Ride both atvs for a year stright and tell me which is still running.
Luke Boyer polaris my can am blew out the rear diff in one year. junk.
not true, the polaris is the touring model, 2 person, and they are the exact same length.
Worst one??? explain this. dont just say its the worst
kipawaRandy needs to follow his own words about reading a mag Grizzly all the way....
im polaris all the way but both thoughs machines had diferent tires i thienk that might have ben part of it
neither of them have a locker, yamaha, sizuki and kawi all have manual lockers, these are just limited slip front diffs!
yea...lets make sure we start the camera after we put the polaris against the wall and spin the rear wheels to lock in the all wheel drive just like they do in the factory videos.
Is what in 4X4 ?
or maybe cuz it was just time to??
polaris was established before can-am was even a thought
i think polaris 4x4 atvs sound like my echo blower unless they have a pipe
@chofliani You see to have never drove a polaris on the snow , Can-Am just rape in all the other condition , in fact , WHY THE HELL WOULD I TRY TO DO WHAT YOU DID ?
isn't the polaris a x2?
it was pretty much the same angle.
also that was 2007 can am now has visco lock QE
Polaris is the best !
I had a 2005 700 polaris and now have a 800 can am. If you want to climb a wall on the beach maybe the polaris is better. If you want to ride hard and fast the Can am kills it in every arena. Plus the friggin' computer on the Polaris caught fire and burned down my garage, my truck, my tools, my motorcyle, my lawn mower & almost my house. So Suck it Polaris!
@BiggysPs3trophys give the machine time and it will kick in
You can hit your thumb once and be fine, twice, three times, FIVE times even and be fine, but lets say on the 6th time you break your nail.
Just because your honda survived numerous times and the polaris didnt doesnt mean anything!
Yea, so how much is a belt
Lol only the 2006 700s had a problem with blowing belts
+osp80 lol I hope
bobjones64 I have the same quad as you
no, it sounds like a powerful machine, the can-am sounds like a modified 1920's motorcycle
lol i backed up into my friends Polaris and almost cracked his rack
man, brute forces are tough ass machines, u can sink em, and put them through absolute hell, and only thing that will happen is the belt will wear out after a while, and yes, we all know they dont have the best top speed, but amazing acceleration, better then a sportsman 800 thats for sure. Polaris is shit compared everyone, honest to god, i would buy a thundercat or a mud pro 1000 before i got a polaris, and everyone knows how much problems them kitty cats got.
polaris kicks that quads assss
CAN-AM RULES!!!
polaris is mad for mudding and pulling can am is all hors power but with no bark
no doubt it was the tires. can am has proven technology that kicks the polaris' ass. i own both and the can am is far better.- 2001 polaris sportsman 500, 2004 polaris sportsman 700 and 2007 can am outlander 500xt
Faster? I dont think soo. Want to crawl put it in low gear. And get aftermarket tires.
lol look at the front rack angle... polaris is over the wall and the can am is against it... not a locker vid but just showing that the polaris front rack is higher... ram the po po plastic crap rack into the rocks and see what is left after
what is it with everything having to be about speed and racing. its proven, polaris AWD system is the best on the market, no way around that. can am is a fast machine but in no way has the 4wd capabilities of the polaris like the polaris system has.
El 4x4 de polaris es el mejor por eso es ON DEMAND TRUE 4WD
because they stole the idea from can am?
im talking about the lock
Can anyone tell me if the Polaris highlifter 850 has the option of 4WD? Or is it just AWD/2WD?
Polaris' four wheel drive in my opinion is the worst one out there. At least with can-am you know you're in 4wd. If you're looking for a good four-wheel drive system go fo Yamaha, best system in the market!
you know what i dont want a really speedy atv in the trails im looking for somthing that i can crawl with and you cant do that with a outlander the throttle is to touchy and yes ive ridin one so i know, i only ave a polaris 335 but i was faster in the trails then my friends outlander 650
For me, Can Am all the way: just listen to that engine!!! Polaris, thats an agricultural tractor, not an ATV, sounds like some 1950's truck....
Thats it
@Ekriptonite a limited slip is a locker after it slips! learn your shit brah, the only true lockers is something that will never become unlocked when in 4 wheel lock! like yamaha has
