You failed to note the potential candidacy of Bronn for seizing Rosby. Lollys Stokeworth has a claim on Rosby, and given Bronn's willingness to resort to violence for advancement, he might pursue it. Personally, I believe he'll seize control of Rosby amid the Kingslanding crisis, following Kevan's demise, ultimately pledging allegiance to Aegon. He might even be the one to rebuff Cersei or Margery's entry.
This honestly sounds like a great path for the story to take. I feel like this could be Bronn's ASOIAF version of continuing to "move upwards" from being a sellsword, as opposed to getting High Tower and the Reach in the show . . . 🙄
It also, with Castle Storkeworth, puts him in control of a large portion of the Crownland breadbasket. I think he'll cut that off and we'll see something similar to the riot of Kings Landing (probably a second riot). It could add to the Cersei mad queen arc, or help fulfill the "cheering crowds" part of the cloth dragon prophecy. Aegon brings the commoners food, security and far better rule than Cersei and they rally in support of him.
The muster on their arms is called ermine. It can have some really crazy forms and is quite prominent in heraldry, where it is classified as a fur. The animal it derives from is also quite damn cute, named ermine or stoat.
@@ThommyofThennNot with ermine, since it is a symbol of nobility. Ermine furs are used as lining for coat and cap/coronet of nobility and great care are made to ensure the black tip of its tail are included in the product (which is where the black pattern on the shield come from) as it is serve as proof that it is fully made from real ermine fur. Also Its like how tractors are seen as vehicles of farmers but a Lamborghini tractor is such a symbol of wealth to the point that most would ignore the fact that its still just a tractor. Also compared to weasel, ermine is a symbol of purity since according to legends, it would rather die than have any stain and blemish on its white coat. This is actually more because ermine is only white in winter, so it was never seen in other season. In other season, its just a stoat.
You say Rosby is not in the show at all, but actually in Season 1 Episode 8 The Pointy End, Sansa briefly addresses Lord Gyles by his first name before she's about to plead that Joffrey spare Ned's life. I don't blame you, it's a blink and you miss it moment, but I was watching the show with friends who haven't seen it before and popped off at the mention of Gyles Rosby. That episode is now in contention as my favorite of the series for how uniquely it feels like everything was ripped straight out of the book with basically no alterations. No surprise that was Martin's episode for the season.
She does, but unlike the sickly old man we have in the book the Lord Gyles in the show looks to be around Ned's age if not younger. He most notably does not cough.
Houses like Rosby and Stokeworth and others in the crownlands reall had it bad in the Dance of the Dragons first they fullfill their oaths and suport Rhaenyra only to face the choice between geting burned by Vhagar or submitting to Aegon, then the green dragons leave and Rhaenyra's dragons arrive and they face the same choice again only to be punished by Rhaenyra for not wanting to burn, the greens then return and punish them again for trying to look out for the survival of their families and submiting to Rhaenyra, no matter what they did they were just doomed to get the short end of the stick.

@@citrusorange794I was trying to remember which freys were Robb loyalists, bc Olyvar or Perwyn being the "Rosby Ward" would explain why they're a (relatively minor) threat to the Lannisters in AFFC
The Rosby "crest" or arms are actually among the most historically accurate in the series. The little black things are a heraldic fur called ermine which is very common and was, for example, featured on the coat of arms of the Dukes of Brittany in medieval France. The three red things are chevrons. Historically, they tended to be going upwards and not downwards, but this existed too.
In crusader kings 2, the agot mod with the bloodline submods makes them a very funny match with the Freys, because if you sum up their respective bloodlines bonuses, you get a noticeable increase in tax revenues, so they are nothing to scoff at in terms of magical eugenics programs. XD
Sometimes I get surprised by George's overlooking of certain things. He's spent so much time world building in Essos, but overlooks Rosby succession like its nothing, he even kills Gyles and writes that detail about his world. Wouldn't House Rosby, a thousands year old house, going extinct be much more of an issue and plot point, especially with a childless Gyles being a staple in Storm and Dance? Oh well.
It's neither the first noble house to end unceremoniously nor will it probably be the last. Look at basically any house that got to keep Harrenhal only to go extinct in a couple generations.
How dare you slander the genius that is GRRM! The inheritor of House Rosby will be a big deal. The ward of Rosemary has already made his presence felt in some small way and is probably a Frey. Ermine and weasels being close kin and weasel symbolism all over the Freys
Tbh I think through the story the implication is that "thousands of years old houses" aren't REALLY thousands of years old, and most of their history is either misinterpreted or straight up made up(similarly to how i t was in real history with some European nobles making up family trees that would have had their ancestry traceable to roman emperors, Greek goods, or in case of Merovingians, Jesus Christ), I think the inconsistencies in their stories are even pointed out by characters in-universe and that's why personally I only take stuff that happened after Aegon's conquest as real history, stuff that happened after Andal's invasion I take as having maybe SOME truth to it and everything before that as pure legend, maybe based on truth but twisting it in such a way that what really happened is now indeterminable
Harry the Heir might be the explanation of how this works. Basically, the heir takes on the family name after inheritance. Basically, the houses aren't unbroken lines of succession.
@@MrJero85 sure, that's how it often works IRL also, but for literal THOUSANDS of years this is unsustainable - just look at how many houses were created, wiped out, or are one breath away from being wiped out in the main story - and they had A LOT of wars like that in the past, that's apart from the fact that at Westerosi tech level keeping any sort of historical record of what happened so long ago wouldn't be possible(IRL even the Bible, arguably the most important book in the Western world, existed in several versions before being codified when Christianity became official religion of the Roman empire, and arguably in some places even after that), but what would very much possible is nobility wanting to boast about how ancient and cool they are and coming up with ridiculous thousands of years long sagas about themselves
The pattern on the sigil is called ermine, after the animal, which has white fur with a black tip on its tail. When a cloak is made from the fur the tail is left as a little tassel (you quite often see it worn by royals) creating the pattern. The black bits in heraldry can vary in design, but what you see in the Rosby sigil seems to be the most common. :)
Pretty sure House Peake is GRRM’s least favorite house considering every single one showed has been a traitor, usurper or engaged in a treacherous power grab.

Really good video. Definitely earned a like. And I agree with other comments mentioning Bronn. He is extremely ambitious and is looking beyond his station. Rosby would be a great stronghold from which to build his air of legitimacy
Gyles actually appears in AGOT where he coughs at court. Also, his funniest moment is when, at the Blackwater, he drinks so much in Maegor’s Holdfast that he passes out in a bread trencher (a plate-like thing) and Cersei is disgusted by it.
I quite like the rosby's, their arms are based on real life heraldic imagery which I find both simple yet pleasing and interesting (i just really like ermine) but they are also interesting to me because despite being small and relatively minor compared to the great houses they still are able to maintain relevancy through their close proximity and good politcking so they keep popping up in westerosi history in secondary yet still important roles
Well the Rosbys and Stokeworths own the land just outside King's Landing. They might be underappreciated but during times of trouble, they come in clutch (basically keeping the capital alive prior to the Tyrells switching sides) so it pays to keep them on the Crown's side.
The Rosbys getting stiffed over by both sides in the dance just made think about Hitchcock and Scully not getting picked for the Halloween heist, and now all I can think is how it'd go if they did the whole draft pick. Also, the cross thingies on their coat of arms are called ermines
The "tree cross patterns" are what is known as a fur in blazonry. There are several different types. This particular one is called ermine as it is supposed to resemble the fur of an ermine [stoat-like creature] in a highly stylized way, and the "arrows" are called chevronels .
@@gooby214 You make a good argument, however, to offer a counter: Olyvar doesn't immediately appear to have low birth but if you think about it, he is nowhere near being the first son of Lord Walder. The flag of Brittanny, now a province of France but in the Middle ages an independent duchy, uses it.
I think it may just be their proximity to King's Landing that ends with them getting into these kinds of situations though, at least in part. A random house in the North would not be involved in the biggest affairs of the Realm but since they are close by and have resources needed for the Realm, but are rather weak to really defend themselves, they always get in positions where they are way over their head
The House's heraldry has Ermine Spots on it, a common heraldic item that represents the furs that nobles would wear to big ceremonies. Principally, the tail fur of the Stoat. There is no set design for how to represent the fur but most vaguely look like House Rosby's symbol (some circles, a line, a sweeping spread ending in several points). King Charles III of Great Britain wore a stoat fur cape to his coronation.
We will all be long gone from this earth by the time good ol’ George get this series finished. I am about to jump in a finish them up for him. Can’t be worse than the show finale.
1:55 can anyone provide some insight on this particular art style here? Part of me wants to call it "deviant art style," but that feels a bit inaccurate so I would appreciate it if anyone had something more concrete
I don’t believe GRRM did nothing this last year, simply he keeps rewriting the same POVs over and over again, which could be more disappointing because he doesn’t know where he wants to go.
I actually quite like house Rosby, they might have terrible constitution, but they're surprisingly prominent throughout the Targaryen era, and still maintains some prominence in the Baratheorn/Lannister reign.
I have a feeling that the children of house frey by the rosby wife of Walder Frey will all die by the ends of winds of winter. Olyvar may very well likely have been murdered for his refusal of the plot as while Walder is not a kinslayer we know many of his sons and family are rather too eager to eliminate any obstacles and move up the inheritance ladder. Walder doesn't know everything his family does, and we know that big walder killed his cousin. And between the golden company, dragon queen and the vengeful north some of whom definitely remember him, he's gonna die. Roslin is the daughter of Walder, and many in the riverlands and north will hate her for this, and the brotherhood without banners is plotting something, and we know Stoneheart hates frey's so imagine her reaction to the woman who was the bride at the wedding where she lost her last known son and daughter of the traitor. Plus she knew of the plot, not good. Perwyn and benfred are young, and age doesn't save you, stoneheart and the wolf pack under Nymeria are more then likely planning a trip to the twins or riverrun. Also, they are likely now squires for other lords, and the crownlands are not safe at all with them threatened with invasion from Aegon, the faith, cersei plotting and daenarys coming, so in war they can easily perish. The maester is old, and in sackings the old die easily.
The black things on white on the rosby heraldry is called an ermine pattern. It's meant to evoke the pattern on an cloak made out of stoat winter fur and is historically associated with the region of Britanny, That is to say "the horn" of france.
Bronn, i see him working that claim his wofe has on the Rosby lands, considering he is already the lord of the neighbouring Stokeworth lands he could turn himself into one of the most significant lords in the whole crownlands. Would end up controlling 1/3 of the entire food supply for Kings Landing
@@nickdentoom1173 yeah that's a distinct possibility. But maybe through him and his wife he'll end up setting up his wife's bastard to inherit. Would be in GRRM style to ironically have a bastard become one of the most influential lords in the crownlands
OT: A history channel I watch once had a GRRM-not-finishing-WoW joke. Now, when you think of it, a history nerd *would* be likely to read ASOIAF (and now that I think of it, the fact that I follow history channels as well as fantasy ones shows there's a lot of crossover), but it still shows that this has become a cultural meme. It may even become Martin's most enduring legacy unless he actually finishes his most famous work. I mean, are Gen Alphas and whatever-we-decide-to-call-the-next-cohorts likely to pick up the first book of a gargantuan series that ends on a cliffhanger?
Writer bias is such a weird thing for me I prefer Brackens simply because of the bias GRRM has against them. Whats the point in rooting for someone you know has plot armor
I have to say I disagree about the Blackwood and Bracken thing. GRRM loves to give us another bit of information that reverses opinions on the information we already had and I think in the end we'll see that with this little feud. I think we kind of have the information already though. The Blackwoods came from up north and were driven out by the Starks. They came south and established themselves at the court of a Bracken King and then usurped them. The Brackens going to have been the kings of the red fork and with a red stallion on there logo that seems to jive too. My head canon is that the Blackwood that came south was a skinchanger and that's made himself useful to the king of the red fork and then naturally took up residence near that giant weirwood tree.
I think the freys will inherit the rosby lands, the weasels can be criticized by their low means but they get all the right marriages and by the end george will be in trouble to kill all the frey infestation across westeros😂
Not all Freys are bad in the books, and they don't have low means. This isn't the show. Also, there's no evidence George's planning to kill all Freys. He kept infamous houses such as the Peakes alive, and there's Freys everywhere in Westeros. The story won't focus on all of them. There are Freys even in the Vale, relatives in the stormlands, one outlaw Frey, and even Freys in Essos. Also, I see no reason to kill off decent Freys such as Roslin, Olyvar, Perwyn, and others, and the random ones we don't know, or the infant ones. Why would George waste his time killing them off just to please black & white simple readers like you? Plus, many Freys are probably going to assault each other, and Stoneheart will get some more.
Anybody else hate the Rosby Sigil? It’s just Three Red Arrows, if you can call them that, like you could pick anything, a fierce animal, a mythical creature, hell they provide food to the King’s Landing, maybe they could have a carrot 🥕 or Corn 🌽 and instead it’s just three lines. To be fair their Sigil is better than House Hasty and House Chyttering, at least it has the ermine.

I love when you talk about the many different minor houses
Ermines are found on ducal and royal robes and attire constantly
You Muppet that is an Ermine field on Rosby's sigil.
Love.
I love that his world is so expansive and free developing he has opinions and biases against houses and characters lol
1:55 can anyone provide some insight on this particular art style here? Part of me wants to call it "deviant art style," but that feels a bit inaccurate so I would appreciate it if anyone had something more concrete
Three Chevronels red on Ermine: Rosby sigil.
I do this when playing CK3AGOT. I always kill all of the brackens and take their titles when they rebel, but will let the blackwoods take the black.
The pattern on the heraldry is called ermine, it's a "fur" which is a type of heraldic tincture.
I like how Cersei is constantly aware that Gyles will die of poor health, and then when he dies she suspects he might have been murdered.
I don’t believe GRRM did nothing this last year, simply he keeps rewriting the same POVs over and over again, which could be more disappointing because he doesn’t know where he wants to go.
He knows where he wants to go, he just has no clue how to get there.
He's just lazy. He admitted to Stephen King that he don't be writing as much as he should. He's dying before he finishes the series.

I actually quite like house Rosby, they might have terrible constitution, but they're surprisingly prominent throughout the Targaryen era, and still maintains some prominence in the Baratheorn/Lannister reign.
bro imagine a house rosby phone case THAT SHIT WOULD BE SIIIICK
1:53 me with my 2hp wizard
Gyles little toon is seriously making me wanna puke.
Those little tree/cross patterns are called ermines and are supposed to be ferrets.
on their crest, the background pattern is called ermine
At least they aren’t House Darry
Edit: Nevermind, the Rosbys have it worse
Funny how House Rosby is basically the Brittany flag plus 3 red arrows
The black things on white on the rosby heraldry is called an ermine pattern. It's meant to evoke the pattern on an cloak made out of stoat winter fur and is historically associated with the region of Britanny, That is to say "the horn" of france.
I can get Rosby’s cough? Well I’m gonna subscribe!
On a sidenote considering your d and d background what are your thoughts on baldurs gate
I really want to play it but my computer can’t run it :,(
Fun fact this sigil the coat of arms of duchy of brittany. With red clickbait things. 😂
Bronn, i see him working that claim his wofe has on the Rosby lands, considering he is already the lord of the neighbouring Stokeworth lands he could turn himself into one of the most significant lords in the whole crownlands. Would end up controlling 1/3 of the entire food supply for Kings Landing
Here is the thing though, i don't think GRRM intens for Bronn to live until the very end.
@@nickdentoom1173 yeah that's a distinct possibility. But maybe through him and his wife he'll end up setting up his wife's bastard to inherit. Would be in GRRM style to ironically have a bastard become one of the most influential lords in the crownlands
splendid!
Even house stockworth is looked down upon even though they are both noble houses
I like the theory that the ward is Robb Stark's squire
sigil reminds me of the flag of the French region of Britany, in which the black symbols are short tailed weasels
Kinda like Robb killing Karstark with Rhaenerya killing Rosby in a way
No, rhaenyra killing Rosby was totally unfair in comparison to karstark demise

Well for the sake of my health I guess I must subscribe 🤷♀️
Cersei being such a predatory menace
Those "trees" are called ermine in heraldry, its supposed to be stoat fur
Writer bias is such a weird thing for me
I prefer Brackens simply because of the bias GRRM has against them. Whats the point in rooting for someone you know has plot armor
How wild would it be if the ward was Reahnys
I think their sigil is a field of wheat, black on grey with red chevrons.
I kinda wish the other Crownland houses have more appearance
Yeah, Tyrion -the-dwarf-with-no-nose- Lannister is pretty fortunate, huh?
DOR-UN. I swear to god Quinn
The things on the sigil are on the flag of brittanny in France, they're called "ermines" and irl they're related to christianity
I thought House Pyke was George's most hated house? 😂
You can’t tell me house rosby is unluckier than house stokeworth 😭
The ward of Gyles Rosby is Benjen Stark.
1:15 This is called an ermine
How do we know that grrm didn’t write this year?
There will be no book, and the plot will never move forward.
Just rip that band-aid off.
I mean, out of the people killed at Sunspear lord Jon Rosby had the easiest death.
He obviously hates house stark. He's killed them the most
That's not hate. That's the cliche "heroes must lose and suffer before rising again and win"
@@gooby214 i know. I was making a joke
GRRM hates the Starks also pls first Ned, Robb, Cat 😢
It's not a trees it's the symbol of britanny, an hermin. The motto of britanny "better dead than soiled"
